Staylor21
I'm black but to me its funny that whenever a white player is etheir about to be in the draft or is an elite player they compare them to other white players. Such as already today people are comparing Adam Archuleta to a poor man Matt Bowen why can't he be compared to like a Adrian Wilson or a Tony Parrish but he gets compared to a white player such as Matt Bowen in which is a insult to me. Also like lets take A.J. Hawk from Ohio State when you ask draft experts to compare him to a linebacker right now in the league they say Zach Thomas,Brian Urlacher,or Keith Brooking why don't they compare them to like a Keith Bullock or a Joey Porter they don't do it. Me in my own mind is wondering why do people always compare white players to other white players in the NFL. I just want someone view on this i'm not racist nothing i just wanted to see how others feel about this.
Steel Cross
I think that there's a general taboo against publicly mentioning any comparisons between blacks and whites. To play it safe, media people don't compare across racial lines. It's not P.C.

BlitzFiftySix
Thats funny. The same could be said for black quarterbacks. You'll never hear about Vince Young being compared to Steve Young, only Mike Vick or Aaron Brooks. I hear those comparisons all the time and not once have I ever given it any thought. Interesting point.

WallyG3
It is a tendacy for people to relate how a player looks physically with how they play. Black quarterbacks are always compared to other black quarterbacks. Case in point, Jason Campbell. People around here assume he's mobile, and is then quite often compared to Doug Williams. To me it's just human tendency. It's more psychology than racism. When you're comparing players, it's only natural to think of how they look physically. Kelvin Bryant
You know, that sounds like the sort of thing that Mike Wilbon would write. Okay, okay, Tony Kornheiser.
Skin'emAlive
its because its harder for some white people to play these types of positions when they dont have those extra fast twitch muscles in their legs. Its the same thing as the white man cant jump theory. j/k
ahudson
You are totally right. There was an interesting article on page 2 (ESPN.com - http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=klosterman/060111) talking about this very issue. It was how people compare Morrison from Gonzaga to Larry Bird and how people are comparing Vince Young to Vick, when he is much more like Steve Young. People catergorize first by color then by attribute (what does this say about us?) That is why someone might go out of their way to compare a white dunking machine to Tom Chambers instead of Dominique Wilkins when few people know Chambers now and a Human Highlight Film reference would make much more sense. Byner21
I totally agree with the original poster. A person's game really has nothing to do with their race, and it's silly how much commentators have difficulty making black/white comparisons. It's pretty rare. If I were a talent evaluator, I'd try to capitalize on this tendency. People are drawn in by physical appearances, whether that means they're drawn to a player because he's got a great build, or simply looks like another player. I think it works mostly on a subconscious level. In baseball, the "moneyball" approach has capitalized on this somewhat. If someone can play, they can play, and if we're comparing players to other players, then race really shouldn't be involved at all.

Like what will the press say when there is a potiential top 5 five white running back who will be in the NFL Draft and comes into the league who are they going to compare him to then?Thats when this whole thing will come to the big light and people will really understand what i'm saying and others have been saying

RIDETHEWALRUS
THis is atually a very good question. I agree with the P.C. answer but I really believe it goes much deeper than that. A guy like AJ Hawk is being compared to other white LBs because there is a stereotype out there that whites are not physically gifted enough to play most positions on the footbal field. Vince Young is being compared to Vick and Cullpepper because of the stereotype that blacks cannot be good QBS. Both stereotypes are B.S., but by making the racial comparison the mediots feel that they are proving white guys can play LN and black guys can play QB etc.
