David Patten doesn't really seem like a team player

"And I didn't volunteer. Would you volunteer to give your money back?"

Why would he make a statement like that? That just shows he is not a team player. All of these other guys we restructuring, but Patten was going to be selfish and wouldn't try to stop the team from breaking apart. This statement shows he is not a true Redskin.

Uhhhhh, david patten was talking like a reasonable person and not a lunatic. If your company said they needed to reduce half of their employees salaries by 50 percent and that management would be talking to certain employees to work it out with them, would YOU VOLUNTEER? No.

Patten is 100 percent in the right here. If your team asks you to restructure, thats fine, but you don't go out and volunteer for that.

Also, cutting Patten would hurt our cap more than keeping him. No way we would cut him.

EDIT: I just saw that you are 16 and probably don't know anything about the real world yet. Trust me, when you get a job and have a family to support, you will understand.

I think you're looking at this all wrong. Not volunteering doesn't mean he was hesitant to restructure when/if the team approached him. I wouldn't imagine that many guys, if ANYONE actually VOLUNTEERED to restructure. But you also have to understand that they were not taking pay cuts, just restructing the way they would receive that same money.

I think he's just being honest. Would you volunteer to give up your money if (1) you weren't asked to and (2) didn't have too. Granted, the statement didn't need to be said, but it's honest.

I bet most of the people who did restructuring deals in case of no CBA didn't volunteer to do it. I bet the team crunched the numbers and ask the players who the numbers worked for them if they were willing to restructure.

Patten was just being honest.

Anyways, there is a difference between a regular worker taking a pay cut and an athlete taking a pay cut. An athelte makes millions a year, and then a vet like Patten, already as millions since he has been around for a while. They can afford a paycut because they already have more money than they need, while a regular guy can't afford a paycut since he is not making a ton of money.

I wish everyone here would back off Patten. About these comments, I agree with everyone here... he was just speaking like a real man.

He seems like a class act to me and I know he can be a servicable receiver, if not better. Let's give him one more year to see if he can be that compliment to Santana in our system. I think he can. Please do not cut this guy... that is ridiculous.

Hopefully this year Patten (or Jacobs - but my money is on Patten) will step up and thrive in this system.

Allow for the possiblity of selective editing to suit the Post's normal appoach of stirring something up in a 'skins story.

I could just see the guy asking patten several questions over the interview, and getting responses in between those two selected for print, that if used in contex wouldn't look as bad.

Art and Om are expert on this, but I remember that a lot of creative editing for making an impact on your audience is not in mis-quoting, but how you select and arrange what actually was said.

This is only what I thought as I was actually reading, because I noted it doesn't fit Patten's rep or 90% of his comments over the years.

That is not the first time he has acted selfish. He made comments earlier in the year about not getting the ball enough, and complained about how he was able to play at the end of the year, that he was not injured for the last 5 games of the season. We should cut him..

He didn't complain about the last five games, he understood the decision to put him on IR because of depth issues at that position. You should shut your computer down.

I agree, David Patten is fine, come on, from his interview on Redskins.com, I think he is just frustrated that he didn't help the team out, all he wants to do is badly contribute. From every quote Ive read of Patten, he wants to contribute very badly because he knows the Redskins made a significant financail contribution and he wants to prove himself
