Off-season lowdown: Mock draft

54. Washington Redskins: RAY EDWARDS, DE, Purdue - The Redskins have a need at linebacker, but will be willing to take a risk with their first pick. Edwards is skilled, but a problem child.

Interesting.

Free agency hasn't even started yet. Why would foxsports bother doing a mock draft? The teams could easily fill needs in FA before entering the draft. I guess it's like putting up x-mas stuff before thanksgiving. I don't get it, but people are going to do it anyway.

I think it's worth a risk..Sean Taylor isn't exactly Gibbs' little angel.

Sean Taylor had no off-field issues before he was drafted. If he did have off-field issues, Gibbs and Co. would've never have drafted him to begin with.

If it's true that this Purdue DE is already a problem child(and Gibbs and staff will know), then I doubt you'd see him drafted.

Character first........

I think he may become Gibb's little angel if he's acquitted of the gun charges. I think Taylor's smart enough to know if he gets out of this situation in Miami, he's got to start using his head better and become a "model citizen" in both Gibb's and the Redskins' eyes....

Not a chance in hell... geez... don't you guys remember anything about Gibbs' criteria for "his guys". Character is first.... FIRST.... meaning it's the FIRST THING HE LOOKS FOR IN A PLAYER. That's the first thing he's going to see in Edwards.... which is why he's going to look in another direction. Example...if Gibbs has the choice to draft Edwards or a guy who has great character, work ethic, and coachability... who do you think he's going to choose?

It's the character guys on our team that just got us under the salary cap? It's the character guys who picked us up and got us six wins in a row to reach the playoffs. It's not guys with great talent that may or may not walk the straight and narrow once they're given the money. Gibbs' doesn't take chances like that.

Someone is going to bring up Manley or someone else.... which would be totally irrelevant. Different era.... different kind of football.... different kids. Gibbs will go with the SAFE pick every time over potential with character flaws. End of discussion.

Cskin, I'm not saying this is a done deal, I'm just throwing it out there. I think it would be nice to draft a young DE this year. This just happens to be one of the best candidates that would probably still be available when we're on the clock. If givin the chance to play for a hall of fame coach, I think it's possible he can clean up his act and join a promising organization.

Purdue defensive standouts Bernard Pollard and Ray Edwards, both early entries for the NFL draft, are glad to have left behind their problems with the Boilermaker coaching staff.

Well, not completely behind. The close friends are at the NFL Scouting Combine facing questions about their past issues with authority.

Edwards couldn't keep his starting job, but he did bring lots of drama to that program this year. Most of it directed at the coaching staff. Thats why he's leaving early.

Don't think that will fly around here.

Yep. And make no mistake, that Gibbs may tolerate certain off the filed problems, ie Taylor, Manley... but will not tolerate locker-room or player vs the team fights in the media type problems. So, it depends on what is meant by "problem child."
