The often-injured Washington Redskins defensive tackle is expected to be among the team's cuts because his $1.7 million salary is too high for a team with serious cap issues. Noble, who will be 32 next month, missed all of last season because of knee surgeries and a resulting staph infection. He contracted another post-surgical infection in January. And as Noble made public for the first time for this story, he also suffered life-threatening blood clots in each lung during his January hospitalization. "I was a lot closer to dying than I would like to admit," said Noble, who hasn't officially retired yet. "I'm feeling a lot better. My appetite is back. I'm 280 pounds [up 25 pounds from his low point during his illness], although I still get an upset stomach a lot. I'm back walking and playing with my kids, but there are still some hurdles to be overcome. I'll be on blood thinners for at least four to five months, so I couldn't even be on the field for anyone until after that."

elkabong82
He probably will retire, especially w/ the illness and injuries he's faced. Leaving the game in burgundy and gold is the best way to go.
Teller
I hate that we never really got to see what Brandon could do. But a staph infection is a SEROIUS situation. Thankfully it sounds like his quality of life off the field will be pretty good in time.
Pocono
I doubt he'll retire and forego an injury settlement. It won't be much but he's not going to make any more money playing football.....too bad.....he'was an over-achiever....the kind you like to see do well. Maybe we'll see him as a coach in the future. IMO over-achievers make the best coaches.

IMO over-achievers make the best coaches. Yeah I thought the same thing. Why retire when you can milk the league for a few more bucks. Truthfully, he deserves anything he gets on an injury settlment. You couldn't ask someone to try to come back any harder than he did. Its a shame he never really worked out. Just another reason not to sign any cowboy free agents! Yes a staph infectionit is very serious....there is one thing that bothers me....You don't leave your people on the beach....Someone please tell me that we are taking care of one of our players...Someone please spin this to me so I don't feel like we are shooting a faithful dog just beause he's sick to save on food costs...Is this Joe Gibbs football...? Somebody make sense of this.
swissarmy47
I love Noble, but indeed parting ways here is best - whether via retirement or releasing him. Strictly not worth the cost against the cap for a backup DT given our current cap situation.
DC_Skins
Good luck Brandon and get well.. article on his illness A Frightening Off-Field Foe Brandon Noble needs crutches to walk, and he has been relegated to spending much of his time at home on his sofa. When he's lying in bed at night and needs to move his left leg to get comfortable, he must lift it with his arms or nudge it with his right leg. He struggles to play with his children. But while Noble might have the typical limitations of a broken-down football player, the career of the Washington Redskins' defensive tackle isn't threatened by damaged ligaments or cracked bones. At 31, Noble has been sidelined by a staph infection, suffered after being injured, that in some cases is potentially fatal. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/26/AR2006012602171.html?sub=new

Somebody make sense of this. well if joe gibbs wants to coach next season; he has to get his team under the cap. and if cutting a oft injured, veteran player who will probably not play ever again is what it takes....then it has to be done. i feel sorry for noble but this is business. im sure gibbs did it in the nicest way..... Arsenic
Man this cap hell stuff is going to get brutal. First LaVar Arrington and now Brandan Noble, who's next to get cut Talyor Jacobs or Matt Bowen? Man we're just throwing all of our productive players out the window!

Darth Tater
He probably will retire, especially w/ the illness and injuries he's faced. Leaving the game in burgundy and gold is the best way to go. He still would need to be 'administratively' cut.

CPstretch
its really too bad that we never got to see just how good brandon could have been. he signed in 2003 only to tear his ACL in the preseason and then was never the same. he played all of last year but missed all of 2005 with an infection in that knee. he probably will never play in the nfl again. Phixius
The guy was on the sidelines during games with a full beard and wearing the same shirt that the coaches usually would wear. If you didnt know who he was you'll think he part of the coaching staff.
