NEW YORK -- The NFL and its players union broke off talks again Sunday, leaving dozens of veterans in danger of becoming salary cap casualties before free agency begins a minute after midnight Monday.

The breakdown was typical of the topsy-turvy negotiations -- just when things seemed darkest, they got brighter. And when it looked optimistic a deal could be struck, as it seemed early Sunday, talks broke down.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the union broke off the talks and had no further explanation.

"The talks ended today after the NFL gave us a proposal which provided a percentage of revenues for the players which would be less than they received over the last 12 years," Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players' Association, said in a statement Sunday evening. "After suggesting we extend the waiver deadline from six o'clock to ten this evening, they gave us a new proposal which was worse than their prior offer. Quite naturally, we rejected that proposal and saw no need to continue meeting.

Let me re-state a little...Because it could happen I guess. Didn't mean to sensationalize the story. The front picture on www.espn.com said that.

Mortenson on now! Mort said to blame both sides...

WB, Pocono.... Judgement time! I'm focused man:)

The NFL and the players union are once again at a standstill in negotiations for a Collective Bargaining Agreement extension. Talks broke off early Sunday evening, according to NFL.com.

Barring a resumption of negotiations over the next few hours, the deadline to start reducing the roster to get under the salary cap is now 10 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Free agency is slated to start at 12:01 a.m. ET on Monday morning.

The salary cap for the 2006 season will be $94.5 million. That figure could force many teams, including the Redskins, to release veterans to get under the salary cap, before the start of free agency.

Also, with no extension, 2007 would become an uncapped year.

The Redskins have been prepared for a number of free agent scenarios for weeks, depending on the outcome of the negotiations.

Vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said on Feb. 23 that, with no CBA extension in place, the Redskins would likely put more focus on acquiring players in the draft than in free agency.

"If there is a Collective Bargaining Agreement, we can answer a lot of our questions in free agency," Cerrato said. "If there's not a Collective Bargaining Agreement, which we should know hopefully in the next few days, then we'll be doing most of our [player acquisitions] in the draft."

The Redskins have been working diligently over the last week to renegotiate contracts with several veteran players. That would help the team get under the $94.5 million salary cap. Quarterback Mark Brunell agreed to terms of a restructured contract earlier this week.

OK I seriously dont understand Upshaw. He says the deal was less. He said previously the players got a deal that was just less than 60%. Reportedly the minimum cap previously was not very far off the max cap, and I believe reported to be 50% of DGR. Now considering all these supposed facts...

This means that TGR has a less than 10% difference from DGR. More like 8-7%. This makes it not nearly as important as an issue as people have made out. This means that all the reports about the minimum salary cap, is pretty much false. It also means that the local revenue wasnt nearly as much as ive heard, and that the reports of it translating to 47-49% of TGR were completely false. Or it means Upshaw is either lying, or confused himself.

Basicaly there is a TON of misinformation going around, and would be nice for someone to get it right, because at least half of everyone must be wrong so far.

As of right now...at 9:15pm Sunday night.... there is still 45 mintues before the deadline. Like one of the negotiation players mentioned earlier this week.... a deal can be done with a phone call... or blackberry e-mail. Let's wait for the results before we start crying about them.

ESPN just had Upshaw and his little side kick on. The Deal is not going to happen.

I think it will get done next offseason and we will have been screwed for nothing
