New Details about UNC-CH AttackSources: Possible link to terrorism

By Amber Rupinta

(03/03/06 -- CHAPEL HILL) - The driver of an SUV that plowed into a group of pedestrians at UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday told police it was retribution for the treatment of Muslims around the world, according to ABC News.

It happened around noon Friday in front of Lenoir Hall on the campus, in a common area known as the Pit. Paramedics took six people to UNC Hospitals. Five had been released by Friday evening and the sixth was not expected to be admitted.

Officials say none of the people were seriously injured. Three refused treatment at the scene.

Chopper 11 shows the accident scene near The Pit at UNC-CH.

Chapel Hill police say they arrested the suspect, Mohammed Reva Taheriazar, 23, of Chapel Hill, shortly after the incident. Several witnesses were able to give police the rented Jeep Cherokee's license plate number. Police said they would charge Taheriazar, a psychology major who graduated from UNC last semester, with several counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Link to terrorism?

Sources say Taheriazar told police he was seeking retribution for the treatment of Muslims around the world, according to ABC News justice correspondent Pierre Thomas. Taheriazar apparently told police he tried to rent the biggest SUV he could find to use in the attack.

By Friday afternoon, a police SWAT team had surrounded a Carrboro apartment complex where Taheriazar reportedly lived.

Authorities released few details about the activity at the University Commons apartments. Video from Chopper 11 showed officers surrounding the building with their guns drawn. Bomb squad members protective could be seen entering the apartment Friday evening.

There was no indication that Taheriazar is connected with larger terror groups. Thomas said his sources said Taheriazar may have been the sole actor in the attack.

What an f'ng idiot

Does he not realize actions like his HURT us far more?

Im thinking this guy was not trying to help muslims, hes just a sociopath that wanted to hurt people for his own pleasure. I just hope 9 attempted murder chargers are enough for him to get the needle. No reason to give him a second chance at trying to kill people.

Can't upset the islamists ya know. Nevermind someone from the RoP tried to run down folks over a cartoon

1) The article doesn't say it was about "the cartoons". (Although, I wouldn't be amazed if he lists that as one reason, either.)

OTOH, if he was ticked off about Abu Garahib and Gitmo, would that make you happier?

2) Re: "The cartoon". I have heard one person (way too few, IMO) point out that, aparantly The Great Allah simply cannot tolerate cartoons, but aparantly, he's OK with blowing up mosques.

SkinsHokieFan, I swear, this is not a sarcastic post. Please, I beg you, tell me in a nutshell what Islam is all about in your view. Please tell me what the benefit of Islam is to our world. Please, if you can, cite passages from the Koran (or Quran, I'm not sure how it's spelled) that show that Islam is a religion of peace. Tell me, reasonably, that the goal of Islam is not the destruction of Christians and Jews.

I fully admit that I am ignorant as to the fundamental beliefs of Islam. All I know is what I see, read and hear in the media. And what I see, read and hear is "death to the infidels" aka Christians, Jews, and Americans in general. I see American civilians die en mass because they got up and went to work in September of 2001. I see bombings worldwide. I see buildings burned and people killed because of a cartoon. I see no outrage, on the other hand, at nearly 3,000 dead Americans -- mostly civilians.

I have tried to keep an open mind. I have tried to believe that Islam is a peaceful religion hijacked by a few radicals. I have tried to find objective sources to tell me what Islam is really about. But I'm losing my patience. I'm losing my objectivity. And I'm losing the desire to remain objective.

Help me, my friend. Help me to understand whatever it is that I am missing.

UNC attacker appears in court; says 'Allah is my lawyer'

By BETH VELLIQUETTE : The Herald-Sun

HILLSBOROUGH -- Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, the 22-year-old former UNC student charged with trying to run down other students at the University of North Carolina on Friday, thanked the judge Monday during his first appearance for the opportunity tell people about Allah.

"I'm thankful you're here to give me this trial to learn more about the will of Allah, the creator and the merciful," Taheri-azar said to the judge during the short hearing in Orange County District Criminal Court.

Taheri-Azar, wearing the typical orange jumpsuit of jail inmates, was escorted into the crowded courtroom under tight security by the Orange County Sheriff's Office and was immediately seated in the defendant's chair.

Orange-Chatham District Attorney Jim Woodall told Judge Pat DeVine that Taheri-Azar had been charged with nine counts of attempted murder and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He then read through each of the 18 warrants, naming each of the nine victims.

Taheri-Azar sat quietly, only glancing once to his right at the phalanx of deputies who stood nearby. He answered each of DeVine's questions politely as she explained his rights and the procedures. Susan Seahorn, an assistant public defender, stood behind his chair.

When DeVine asked Taheri-Azar if he wanted to hire his own attorney or have one appointed for him, he answered, "I am representing myself."

Taheri-Azar spoke softly and it was difficult to hear exactly what he said. Woodall, who was standing near him during the first appearance, later said Seahorn spoke to Taheri-azar as he was sitting in the defendant's chair. "She whispered in his ear to stop talking, and he said he would decide when to stop talking," Woodall said.

Although Taheri-Azar said he would represent himself, DeVine still appointed the Public Defender's office to represent him "out of an abundance of caution," she said.

DeVine told Taheri-Azar that his bond would remain at $5.5 million and that he would remain in custody under a safekeeping order at Central Prison in Raleigh.

After speaking briefly in a backroom with two representatives of the Public Defender's office, deputies escorted Taheri-Azar to a sheriff's car that was waiting to transport him back to the prison. As news reporters shouted questions at him about representing himself, Taheri-Azar replied, "Allah is my lawyer."

ugh, no it is not. I was listening to the radio and no mention, watching the national news and no mention.

what are you talking about?

What we have here is a severe case of FITM syndrone (foot-in-the-mouth). Symptoms include making bold statements and accusations that turn out to be completely false and baseless, mainly directed at the "liberal media."

Coming from someone who has made some of the most absurd points this board has seen.

To AFC's credit, I hadn't seen anything on this at all. My determining factor is that if Extremeskins reports it to me, it's news to me. I shouldn't be getting my news from ES. I have constant access to "mainstream news." But sometimes I do, as in the case of this story, simply because this was a minor item elsewhere.

Point being, this has been deemed an act of terrorism by the assailant's own admission but this story has been clearly marginalized.

You never saw, "TERRORIST STRIKES SLEEPY COLLEGE TOWN", did you? Nope, you saw, "SUV jumps curb, threatens picnic revelers."
