budski
Why cant they grow natural grass indoors these days. That new stuff they have come out with that has the dust kick up or little pebbles what is that?
CPstretch
called field turf
Symbol
It's recycled rubber. Usually from old cleats. It actually is suppose to be really nice. The reason for no natural grass indoors is the cost to keep special lights on at all times to keep the grass green would be too costly, plus you would need to have to specially build a drainage system for watering the grass. richard saunders
I believe the field turf has tiny little rubber balls. It prevents cleats from getting caught and allows more resistance. Much better than the old turf.
budski
It still doesnt appear to give much cushion.
dchogs
the "stuff" is ground up rubber, i believe. the field turf is pretty nice to play on, but you get the rubber everywhere. my wife and i have to vacuum every week after our indoor soccer games after the rubber falls off of our clothes and bodies. my shinguards seem to have a great affinity for trapping the rubber inside em. no soccer comments, navy. ChrisL4064
i played lacrosse on that stuff and there is def. and advantage, most of it has drainage capability. all stadiums in the NFL need to go to natural grass, regardless of where they are located. i am a firm believer in saun alexander, emmit smith, marshall faulk, edgerrin james all being products of this field turf or (fantasy) turf as i like to call it. budski
So eventually they would have to replenish the rubber stuff, still dont know why they cant grow grass indoors now.
Symbol
no soccer comments. I don't know why anyone would give bad comments, you didn't insult the NFL by calling soccer, football.
budski
That would have been a sloppy game in Seattle if that was grass for sure.

Heavy Jumbo
I read an article once where an NFL trainer blamed the "give" on the new field turf for an increase in knee and ankle injuries. Has anybody played on the stuff who can confirm that?
Mr. S
field turf seems close enough to regular grass, but grass is football. Therefore, I cant respect domes and users of field turf or regular turf.
REDMAN7
I've actually heard a few guys say they prefer the new field turf to natural grass. I know its a huge improvement over the old astroturf.
Sherlock Holmes
It is kind of a soccer post sorry! But i have trained on the rubbery turf stuff....and dont like it one bit compared to grass..... Ive also played rugby on it, and theres not any real benefit to it that i can see....
aussieskin
In Melbourne Australia we have an indoor stadium that has real grass, unfortunately grass needs sunshine to grow properly, when the stadium was first used there were a lot of leg injuries, now the grass just get replaced every so often, grass indoors just doesnt seem to be realistic,
MattGeorge85
It would be real great if all teams could go to natural grass. But I'm sure you've seen what northern teams witout domes look like in the playoffs...dormant grass and dirt painted green. That stuff is more dirt than grass and has profound effect on the game. I like grass more than turf any day...but some cities don't need it, but some do, Chicago in the playoffs really comes to mind right now.
ChiefPowhatan17
Field turf is a better creation than astro-turf, but it is still not grass. I am a firm believer that FOOTBALL should be played on grass and in the elements, no matter if you're in Minnisota. I think that it is ridiculous that the vikings a team of the norris plays in a dome. I think they have astro too. But, I want to see the jerseys get dirty and grass stained, that's how it's suppose to be, not clean at the end of a game. I also think that these teams that have out door stadiums and play on turf are cheap. They need to pony up and actually get a ground crew to cut and keep the grass nice. Look if they can do it in Foxboro and Lambau then others should be able to do it too.:logo:
