Soliloquy
Sticking (coincidentally) in the concept album vein, Operation: Mindcrime is also pretty spiffy when wearing headphones. Yup. I just got Pelican's "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw", and it's great using 'phones.
EersSkins05
Hahahahah, I am listening to Beating around the Bush right now. I have every single AC/DC album, and I love them. I agree they need to be played absolutely as loud as possible, which probably would make them the worst band to listen to with headphones on...Because bleeding from the ears is not fun. I worry for my speakers' safety when AC/DC is involved.

"Promised Land" by Queensryche is amazing with headphones. There is so much going on in the background.
rincewind
I'm always amazed when i listen to the Beatles through headphones - you can really hear how much the used stereo recording.
Om
Just a word of caution: if you listen to the White Album, in headphone, while adjusted, you might never come back.

d0ublestr0ker0ll
Wow, NOBODY has recommended Zeppelin? Led Zeppelin is amazzzzzzzzing to listen to in the headphones. I barely even enjoy them without the headphones blazing. They are one of the heaviest bands ever, yet they are probably the most subtle rock band ever, too. When you listen to 'em on headphones you can pick up all of Bonham's fluttery little accents that surround his bombastic playing. Jimmy Page's fire becomes literally unbelievable in headpones. Then there's John Paul Jones' bass playing that is truely complimented when you have it pressed against your ears. I think they're the ultimate headphone band for rock n' roll. Otherwise you gotta turn up the sterio, or just don't play 'em at all.

Funny, the drummer in my band and I were discussing Bonham this past weekend at at gig. Another drummer commented on how Bonham sucked in their opinion and went on to say how easy his stuff was etc... How sloppy he was etc... I play drums as well and I mentioned exactly what you just said... it's all the little things that someone with a crappy ear misses. Much of the subtle things go right over alot of people's heads. Grimm
Springsteen's Nebraska is pretty good late at night headphone album, for something weirder Ulver's "Perdition City" is awesome, and if your up to it try Sunn O)))'s "Black One" in complete darkness

zoony
Well I finally broke down and bought a pair. I was on a flight from Hartford to Detroit on Thursday of last week. It was a DC-9, and I was sitting in the back. The engine was right next to my head. I told myself then that I would be treating myself to a pair no matter what the cost. I fly again Monday, can't wait to try them out.

deejaydana
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd is fairly amazing with headphones. Kid A or even OK Computer by Radiohead are also solid choices. Beats are great but terribly over-priced imho.

jnhay
Beats are great but terribly over-priced imho. Which is why they're a great gift. Not my preference, but still good headphones. Pink Floyd - Insert any album here - is amazing. Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania, the song specifically is awesome with headphones on. The drum transition part will sound incredible with a pair of Beats and a high quality recording.
