Redskins Team Report 2/24/2006

By Paul Woody

Richmond Times-Dispatch

CAP SPACE: One of the biggest challenges facing the team will be cutting $20 million-plus in order to get under the cap enough to sign free agents.

MOVING ON: DE Demetric Evans wants to stay, but he also wants to be a starter, and that will not happen unless Renaldo Wynn is released. Nic Clemons is a possible replacement for Evans. He has size and a huge wingspan, but he remains a raw talent who needs experience. SS Ryan Clark is a good fit in the team's multiple defenses and would like to stay. If he goes, Pierson Prioleau is likely to replace him. TE Robert Royal is not the most talented player, but he always gives a good effort. He would be replaced by Robert Johnson, a massive player who could become a decent starter with time.

TARGETS: Coach Joe Gibbs says most of the pieces are in place for the team to improve, and now he wants to do the fine-tuning necessary to take the team to the next level. The most obvious need is at wide receiver. The team could make a run at Antwaan Randle El. He is a capable wide receiver, and he also would give the team a dependable punt returner capable of game-breaking plays on every return. The Seahawks want to keep Joe Jurevicius, but he would be a good fit with the Redskins. He is a big, strong receiver with deceptive speed who would take pressure off WR Santana Moss.
