DC_Hokie
I don't live in P.G. county. Anyways, 40% of car thefts in P.G. county happen because people start their cars and leave it while it warms up. Now I know thefts are a huge problem in P.G. but/well, they showed footage of this woman getting ticketed for this offense in her own driveway. Lets just say that she was pretty mad about it and being kind of uncooperative. What gets me is that the officer stated that the women can get another citation for being disrespectful of the officer. What!!? Can anyone shed some light on this?
Leonard Washington
Anyways, 40% of car thefts in P.G. county happen because people start their cars and leave it while it warms up. i think that's true everywhere. during my misguided youth, i used hang out at 7-11s. fool goes inside and leaves the engine running...boom got some wheels for a couple of hours! What gets me is that the officer stated that the women can get another citation for being disrespectful of the officer. What!!? Can anyone shed some light on this? what don't you get? just b/c you're getting ticketed doesn't give you the right to be an ass. actually in general, i wish i could give people citations for acting like flipping out in inappropriate situations. also you think the cop wants to get screamed on for doing his job? imagine if your work situation was like that...cop could just beat her ass...i think she'd prefer the ticket instead.
DC_Hokie
I could care less if the cops gets offended for me screaming at them. I don't think cops should be held at a higher standard than the average citizen. Don't they work for us? My question is what would the citation be for? Would it read $60 fine for being disrespectful to said cop? This is obliviously not including throwing profanity or punches at said cop.
pseto
I always find it funny that people want to start something with cops, let alone a fight. They get what they deserve. I know there are bad cops out there that may instigate the action and this is absolutely wrong, but for the most part, take the ticket, and go to court. SkinsBry
That reminds me of something that happened to me in Texas. I used to do delivery for Sears. When we'd get to a stop, we'd leave the truck running while we installed the appliance. This one stop was an easy one, a new fridge, through the garage, right into the kitchen. The truck was 50-75 feet away from us while we were hooking up the ice maker, when it just drove away. I said to my assistant, our truck just drove away. I went running with a big adjustable wrench in my hand, and the customer grabbed his keys and said to get in. We go racing through traffic and catch up the the truck. At that time, the guy who took the truck knew we were behind him. He turns into a neighborhood and starts truckin' down a dead end road. The thief bailed out of the truck and ran into the woods, leaving the truck crashing through a guard rail and into a deep creek. We stopped and I ran after the guy with the wrench still in my hand, he deserved a beatin' and I was gonna give it to him. However, he had too big of a headstart and ran into the woods that was pretty thick, I just couldn't find him. The cops then came and I gave my statement and then the wrecker came to pull the truck out of the creek and took it back to the shop so we could get another one. Ohhh, good times, good times. I never let the truck running unattended again.

And enforcing the laws in your community is what you are paying them to do. So you are going to yell at them for doing the job that you are paying them to do. My pop was a cop for almost 30 years. They would get a bunch of complaints from a given neighborhood about people speeding and why weren't the cops there to stop it. So, he would take a day and head over there with a radar gun, because that is what Joe Citizen wants. Well it turns out, Joe Citizen is speeding also, just "not as bad" as the people that he called about. Being a cop is a thankless job. Rarely is anyone happy to see the poe-poe, and you catch 90% of the people at their absolute worst. Of yeah, and being on a government payroll does not entitle every tax payer to treat you like ****. Nope I not going to abuse them for doing their job and the abuse they may get comes with the territory. But like I stated before, I don't think I should give a cop any more respect than the average citizen. Why, because they can haul my ass to jail? They are doing their job - that's it. Why was this cop threatening this citizen with a citation for disrespecting her? Anyone?

Ghost of
Why was this cop threatening this citizen with a citation for disrespecting her? Anyone? And some of the previous posters forget that it's a cop's job to take disrespect out on the street. They are not revenue generators or nannies (or shouldn't be.) This means they face situations where, IN ORDER TO DE-ESCALATE, they have to take a certain amount of abuse because people are NOT interested in a physical confrontation. There can't be a damn law or rule that says you have to respect a cop (and that is wholly subjective and subject to abuse.) So long as no threats issue out of your mouth and you don't assault the officer, that's the only thing you need to do when getting a ticket written up or dealing with the police. I have to say, it is lame as hell to write tickets on people for doing something on their own property in their own car (leave it running.) On the street, I can even see that, but not on a public driveway. I love the people on this board that have never dealt with problem cops. As a personal example, my friends and I were out in October in Michigan for my best friend's b-day. Some pizza guy drives by and offers us a cheap pizza that he got stuck with. We said maybe two sentences worth across a small street (this is not a residential area either) to negotiate/ask what he had and keep in mind there are about 30 people out there aside from us that night and they're all making a good deal of noise. Cops on bikes roll by and tell us to move on, we were waiting for my friend to get money out of the ATM, and they just tell us to move on. We point out the other people who were making CONSISTENT noise and they just tell us to shut up and move on (with no similar words for the 'loiterers' on the street making more noise.) Then we walked by two white girls and one said "is this where the riots start?" to the other. After an angry letter from an alumnus of the U of M, I received a personal apology from the Ann Arbor police and the Dean of Michigan.

Ghost of
I understand what you're saying, but in this society, they are considered 'authorities' and should be obeyed (assuming cop isn't abusing their powers). You can obey people a variety of ways. If he's writing a ticket the only thing the person has to do to "obey" is to take the ticket or allow him to place it on her windshield. She doesn't have to 'respect' him or obey him without question. Sure, in other situations it pays to listen and obey immediately to preserve your own skin and allow officers to get at the bad guys. I just think of the guy on death row in MS because an officer on a no-knock raid got killed (never announced he was the police) and a once the cops showed up in force (it was a duplex and cops didn't know how it was divided--hell of a tip from an informant, no doubt) and said "Police!" he dropped his weapon. That he was defending his little baby girl in that room with him, that he had no prior convictions and that the dead cop was the son of a police chief---none of that seemed to matter. Whoops, wait, that last one did. So he's on death row for defending his home and his baby.
