Donita35
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2341839 Williams replaced an injured Fred Smoot, one of the Vikings' top free-agent signings last year, and started the last eight games. Williams played well enough to keep his spot when Smoot returned, relegating Smoot to the nickel back role. CLICK LINK FOR FULL TEXT Let this be a hint to players looking for "the big pay day" instead of giving their prespective teams a chance to make a deal. Sometimes it is the team and/or the system that makes you great. It is a sad day when a once heavily saught after player gets exposed as a fraud. On the other hand, I kinda feel sorry for him. It will be interesting to see how many boat parties he throws next season as a backup.
Fifty Gut
that doesn't mean Fred Smoot is gonna play nickel next year that just means the team doesn't believe in the motto, "you don't lose your job to injury"

I think he has been out played. :2cents:
skinstzar
Does he still get paid that heavy contract? Does he still get a ring if the Vikings go all the way? Sure you want to start, play and be a star but I don't feel sorry for Fred Smoot at all and I seriously doubt he wishes he stayed in Washington. He wanted the coin and he got it. mikalax2
Im probably gonna get killed by everyone on this one, but I always thought smoot was bad. He seemed like he would always be right there with a WR but then the WR would still make the catch. And although he showed some guts while playing hurt, he still did get hurt, and it seemed he got hurt pretty easily. I was happy when he left because I knew he wasnt worth the money, and I would much rather have carlos playing who can actually ring someones bell. Letting him go was another good move by Gibbs and co.
Bonez3
I don't if anyone has seen me write this before,but.... FRED SMOOT SUCKS. Do not argue with me, because you will lose. I am not a hater, I have many witnesses that put me on record for stating the same when he was a Redskin. (Let me tell you, it takes alota work to have me dog a current Redskin- there may only be a handful at best in the history of the franchise). The best thing that ever happend to the Skins. FRED SMOOT SUCKS. For all you Madden junkies out there who think players actually have ratings in real life and were pissed because you thought we were losing someone good- go watch some film of him in DC or against Car last year with the Minny. Never invest in a name.
The Full Monty
He'd still make a damn fine nickelback! No question about that.

Letting him go was another good move by Gibbs and co. I agree 100%. I know Smoot had a pretty good last year and a half here. But prior to that, I don't ever recall (in almost 60 years of watching the Redskins) any DB getting beaten as regularly as Fred did. I thought it was a shame that we lost him when he finally turned it around. BUT then I saw him getting beaten regularly in the MINN games, so it looks like he revereted to his earlier form. He was playing SO badly with the Vikes, it was just a matter of time until he lost his job. There were even stories in the MINN press about them getting a bum deal with him. The injury just made it convenient for them to make the move. He will not be a starter there this year.
Peregrine
I feel no sympathy for Fred Smoot. The man got what he deserved. He was offered a good contract in Washington, declined it saying we werent offering him enough. Eventually he settled for the EXACT same deal + a couple hundred extra thousand in signing bonus money, chump change, just because he was too stuborn to come back and admit he overestimated his worth. He thought to highly of himself, didnt care about his team, and is now reaping the rewards.
ChiefPowhatan17
Smoot should've never left, then he wouldn't have had a boat party. We could use him still. But, his value was exposed up in Minnisota.:logo:
SkinsHokieFan
And once again the team makes a great move by letting a player walk Darryl Gardner, Fred Smoot, L. Coles, Rod Gardner, just to name a few off the top of my head
Donita35
I guess I kind of feel sorry for him because I met him at the Dream (a club in DC that is now called Love). Smoot, Champ and a few other guys were hanging out there (not in the VIP Room like Lavar, which I thought was kinda cool). Champ actually had a long coversation with me and my friends about football and he and I sharing the same b-day. I think he was amazed to be having a legitimate football conversation with me (a female). Smoot, was cool too and I was excited (at the time) that he gave me a kiss on the cheek. HHHHHH! Those were the days of his stardom, the sad part is that he doesn't even realize it.

DaRock
I'll take Fred Smoot back as a #3. Be a heckuva lot better than seeing Walt Harris out there.
MoeRedskins
Wow, a lot of hate toward Smoot since he left. I guess a lot of people felt wronged by him looking for a pay day, which I don't hate him for. The second contract is suppose to be the big money one and all the players look for that one. Regardless, Smoot is done in Minny once it is cheaper to get rid of him than keep him.

I don't care what people are saying now because if he had never left I doubt more than one or two people would have anything bad to say about him. I only say one or two because theres always someone who can find a reason to hate anyone. So what he didn't resign here. If a few hundred thousand is "chump change" as someone here put it we could of matched it but we didn't. Good luck to Fred with the rest of his career. n|n
Here is another bafoon character that falls right info this thread/category: 'They (REDSKINS) were particularly effective against defensive end Sean Gilbert, who had a zero-tackle performance against the team he left in April after sitting out last season in a contract dispute.' At the time 'God told him' to take the higher contract number. HA. What a team player.

RIDETHEWALRUS
Give me a break please. "Fred Smoot Sucks"? I wasn't aware that you were a talent scout. How do you find time to post on this board when you are so busy grading players? See the thing is, NFL teams have staffs that research players and determine if a player "sucks." They don't just see a name (and Smoot's name wasn't that big by the way) and say that is who I want to throw 30 million at. Smoot was a highly coveted FA. Why might you ask? Because he is a pretty good player, at an extremely difficult position nonetheless. Now the real question is, was he over-rated particularly by Redskin fans? Absolutely. We had just seen Champ walk and we told ourselves that its ok beause Smoot was gonna fill those shoes. He couldn't, but he was still solid. More importantly we must ask ourselves if Walt Harris and Carlos Rogers is better than Fred Smoot and whomever else we would have drafted at Rogers' spot (it could have been Merriman, it could have been Mike Williams). Iam very happy having Rogers here and I am not too dissapointed to see Smoot gone, I don't think he was the right type of CB for our D. But lets be honest here guys, TIVOing a game and watching it twice doesn't all of a sudden make you a GM or a talent scout. Fred Smoot does not suck, he is also not nearly as good at playing football as he likes to say he is.
Reaganaut
Smoot is a good back and was solid for the Skins. He made a mistake not taking the Skins' offer. It's too bad because we could have used that draft pick on a defensive lineman instead of a cornerback last year. Smoot is good people even though he doesn't think with his right head off the field.
