On my birthday in 1944:

United States scores major victory against Japanese in Battle of the Philippine Sea

On this day in 1944, in what would become known as the “Marianas Turkey Shoot,” U.S. carrier-based fighters decimate the Japanese Fleet with only a minimum of losses in the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

The security of the Marianas Islands, in the western Pacific, were vital to Japan, which had air bases on Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. U.S. troops were already battling the Japanese on Saipan, having landed there on the 15th. Any further intrusion would leave the Philippine Islands, and Japan itself, vulnerable to U.S. attack. The U.S. Fifth Fleet, commanded by Admiral Raymond Spruance, was on its way west from the Marshall Islands as backup for the invasion of Saipan and the rest of the Marianas. But Japanese Admiral Ozawa Jisaburo decided to challenge the American fleet, ordering 430 of his planes, launched from aircraft carriers, to attack. In what became the greatest carrier battle of the war, the United States, having already picked up the Japanese craft on radar, proceeded to shoot down more than 300 aircraft and sink two Japanese aircraft carriers, losing only 29 of their own planes in the process. It was described in the aftermath as a “turkey shoot.”

Admiral Ozawa, believing his missing planes had landed at their Guam air base, maintained his position in the Philippine Sea, allowing for a second attack of U.S. carrier-based fighter planes, this time commanded by Admiral Mitscher, to shoot down an additional 65 Japanese planes and sink another carrier. In total, the Japanese lost 480 aircraft, three-quarters of its total, not to mention most of its crews. American domination of the Marianas was now a foregone conclusion.

On my birthday in 1945, this picture was taken of my uncle, the night before his flight over Hiroshima when as electronics officer he armed the atomic bomb.

Crazy stuff. One of the crazier things was that the US shipped the first atom bombs from California to the Tinian on an un-escorted battle cruiser. A day after dropping off their secret, precious cargo the USS Indianapolis was sunk by one of the only TWO remaining, operational Japanese subs in the fleet.

People LOVE to think that the victory in WW2 was so decisive—it may still have been but if a few things were slightly different by a matter of hours there could've been many many more casualties for the Allies. On D-Day there were 2 full Panzer division of tanks within distance of the Normandy beaches. They couldn't move to the fight because they were only to be released on Hitler's orders. Hitler had strict orders not to be woken up before 10 am.

Allies probably would've still won. Japan was going to fall regardless of the A-bomb. Russia was approaching on them too. We basically had cut Germany off from it's oil fields.

One of my grandmothers cousins was on the Indianapolis. No clue what happened to him.

He had suffered an assassination attempt (or two) at this point. He was extremely paranoid and the stress was wearing on him. He had quack "doctors" attending to him giving him dubious potions to heal him. Part of his regimen was uninterrupted sleep.

There's a hispanic chick recently that caught my eye, I think she's on Fox. She's usually one of those on the scene reporters...I'm trying to find her name, but I don't see her on the website. I think her last name was Hernandez or Lopez

My man.  And oh ya, she knows she's sexy...which is sexy.

She squats a lot, too...posts a lot of gym pics.  Tight body, pretty, and she seems pretty modest and down to earth.

I started to post an instagram pic but it felt kinda creepy.  It's not like I check her Instagram multiple times a day or anything, though...

Sin, I do remember you mentioning her a while back, may be how I discovered her.

Now you're just showing off, didn't you say you had a crush on Rachel Maddow back in the day, too?
