there needs to be an other

I agree!

AS for the question:

Israel: Middle Eastern countries and the Muslim world in general believe The Western Powers took a country that was in Muslim hands and gave it to the Jewish people. What's even more complicated both Muslims and Jews claim the exact same site for one of their holiest religious sites. The Dome of Rock and the Temple Mount.

United States: The hatred of the old coloniol powers transferred to the new power: The U.S. Considering how the U.S. has back repressive regimes in the past, the Israel thing, Iraq, Troops being in any Muslim country, etc.....

Also, they view the U.S. as heathens- producers of filth- ie movies, music, etc...

Remember we actually trained Osama, Saddam got many of is vanished weapons of WMD from the U.S.

========================================================

Note this is the general hatred. Fanaticals take it to a whole different level!

At a basic level, they hate Israel because of their irrational belief that Israel is unjustly occupying "Palestine". They hate us because we support Israel and because we have troops in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait (and now Iraq and Afghanistan).

CD pretty much nailed it. Good post

that is all true but ...

those in power hate us most of all because for years these hostile regimes in the ME have built their militaries extravagantly, boldly, and with pride, hoping that they would be a force to be reckoned with and enable the rulers the power to do as they wished. Now seeing the level of weaponry and sophistication in our hands as well as the israelis they have come to the grim realization that it was all a complete waste. It must be immensely frustrating to have spent so much money and put forth so much effort to build what you thought was a force to be reckoned with only to find yourself woefully outmatched against an even modest contingent of us made air sea and land weaponry. Why do you think they are all so obsessed with WMD's, these are the only things that can even the playing field for them, and give them some leverage. Without them they are like lame ducks with big feathers and they know it.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it all up. We also had a hand in botching Iran as Liberty said. It's only really the extremists and fundamentalists that hate our pop culture, many teens and youth in general in Muslim countries are still buying Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears albums from street vendors and shops, and in some places it's considered "cool" to wear something an American flag on it, kind of as a show of rebellion, similiar to "punk" fashion here. Also, the belief that we trained Osama is false; both the CIA and Osama himself have repeatedly denied that. The United States funded Afghan soldiers in a coalition effort that included Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, but bin Laden was involved with plain Afghan freedom fighters and funded them himself using his family's private money.

Europe's 19th century powers carved up Africa and the Middle East to further thier own imperialistic agendas. After WW1 the Allies only made things worse. The arbitrary lines they drew around their colonies created damage that is still being felt today. And then in 1949 the UN granted Israel to the Jews. This was the ultimate insult. Not only was the West chopping up the Middle East with wonton disregard to the indigenous cultures, but now they were arbitrarily planting a Western nation right in the middle of Arab territory. (from the ME point of view, of course)

The US is the most hated today because we are not only the most powerful Western nation by far, but we are also the biggest supporter of Israel.

The Middle East is a big big mess. Arabs hate us and Israel, but they also largely hate eachother. A major reason for this is old European imperialism.

Henry is on the money as usual but I'd add that there is a cultural problem here.

Basically I see a culture of failing ideas resisting change. Freedom and both economic and social is a powerful idea that tends to beat out those that oppose it. The Arab world rejects the concepts of western liberal society and feels threatened by it. Religious leaders knowing that their way of life is in danger and political leaders fearing the concepts of democracy have moved to demonize the west as a matter of self preservation.

It's a losing battle by them as people will eventually demand a better life for themselves. Communism tried to demonize the west as well, but an economic system doesn't have as powerful a hold on people as does a religion/culture. This will take a long time to play out.

I am not voting in this poll because none of the options come close to being acurate.

EDIT: But I guess the one I take issue with the most is the idea that they are envious or Jealous (with a capital "J") of us because our country is more "alive." This is the most typical Western explanation imaginable. This is a clash of cultures, not a matter of jealousy. We should start by making that clear.

These poll options are awful, incomplete, and narrow-minded. The debate behind the poll is interesting, important, and extremely complex.

Fact is, Mid-Easterners hate America for hundreds of reasons, some of them valid, some of them unreasonable.

They are rightfully appalled by our hypocrisy when we denounce terrorism and then bomb Baghdad and kill thousands of innocent men, women, children and even babies. They are appalled by our hypocrisy when we support dictators and oppose certain Democratically-elected leaders all the while claiming to support the spread of Democracy. Iraqi's were rightfully pissed when Bush 1.0 seemingly toppled Saddam and then left the Shiites high and dry to face the death squads.

On the flip side some of them hate us and want to kill us simply because we are not Muslims (Wahaabism). Some of them are simply jealous. Some of them wrongfully blame us for all their problems. Some of them are simply brainwashed from birth to hate us.

Lets say Israel and the US was as active as France right now.. and Israel was moved south 50 miles with the same acreage...

We do not believe in Allah...

thats good enough...

So you really think they would have a problem with us if we completely left them alone? How would the clerics spin the justification for our deaths without the whole global bombing campaign, imperialism and imposing of our values?

How the hell do you completely leaves people alone in todays world? The market is global, the ME is a major energy exporter, no matter what you WANT the west will always be active in the region because of business interests.

Besides how do we "leave them alone" with Israel there? Should we just watch them build nukes and threaten a friendly nation?

You do remember that Bush Jr. ran as an isolationist, don't you?

"We are not nation-building" and all that. For about eight months he was pulling us back. Fast.

9-11 still happened. Extremist Muslims don't need our help to work up the hatred.
