What's the Penalty if a Team Isn't Under the Cap?

What is actually the penalty to a team if they aren't under the cap come the deadline? Also what is it if you aren't under after signing rookies? The reason I ask is that we should get under by the deadline, but if the new CBA isn't done we might be in some trouble.

Question 1.13

So...what happens if a team goes over the Salary Cap?

Answer: The short answer is simply that NO team CAN go over the Salary Cap. Note that every contract must go through the NFL League Office before the deal can be made official. Presumably, one of the things the league must do at this time is determine whether or not the contract would violate the NFL's Salary Cap. If the deal does violate the cap, then the NFL will reject it.

There have been instances in which a team has managed to sneak a cap evading contract by the league. Upon further review, the violations were caught by the league and the respective teams were penalized. Penalties include fines and/or forfeiture of draft picks. In recent history both the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers have been penalized draft picks, while the 49ers' front office personnel (Carmen Policy and Dwight Clark) were also fined.

What actually happens if a team is over the cap when the leauge year starts is. They are given 7 days to comply if they are not in compliance then the NFL starts voiding their teams contracts starting with the most recent and then works back from there until the team is in compliance

Death

Ok maybe not that extreme, but if I remember correctly somehow the Broncos SB team slipped by and didnt get caught to much later and were fined draft picks.

Different situation they were fond years later to have circumvented the cap by paying under the table. which is a fine and loss of picks

Coming into the season over the cap means the NFL will start voiding your contracts until you are in compliance

I have always wondered that as well. I guess there is some sort of monetary penalty sort of like baseball.

Baseball cap is a complete joke. Lets say you team is over the cap and you want to sign a player to $10M / year, you only have to play 10% of salary to the league. Thus, you are really paying the player $11M / year. Wow, like that will stop rich teams from signing players.

It should be hard cap (NFL), or, for ever dollar you are over, you must pay the league (NBA). In essence, NBA forces you to pay double if you are over the cap. Thus, under NBA system, same guy maybe worth $10M, but not $20M.

If a player and a team sign a contract how can the NFL invalidate a contract they never signed or were really a part of outside of oking it? They aren't judges, they just can't say "Oh well that contract is void" That's not how contracts work.

Thats how it works in the NFL. ALL contracts are subject to league approval and ALL contracts can be voided within reason by the league.

We all better hope this isn't the case,

Ethan Albright=gone

A bunch of low key players=gone

Jason Campbell=gone

Carlos Rogers= gone

Santana Moss=GONE!!!!!

Hopefully, this doesn't happen and we go forward instead of backwards!

I heard they were changing the rule this year.

Any team over the cap will be allowed to hire Bill Parcells to take a severe physical beating on their behalf. While it will cost them a significant amount of money, the beating of Parcells will be televised on Pay-per-view.

If this is true, perhaps, we should go over the cap, just this once... :D
