Air Force Cane
For those who study enemy tactics, strategy and doctrine. This is a very long captured document laying out the war of Al-Queda against the secular/Baathist Syrian regime 1976-82. Many lessons are apropo of their war against the West: http://www.ctc.usma.edu/aq_600080.asp
Air Force Cane
From the document above here is Al Qaeda’s statement of purpose (equivalent to a mission statement): A religious group of the nation of Mohammad (God’s blessing and peace be upon him) whose faith is the faith of the believers in Sunna (profit teachings) and Jama’ah (consensus), are adopting Jihad as a method for change so that the ‘Word of God’ becomes supreme, and they (the group) are working to provoke Jihad, prepare for it, and exercise it by whatever means possible. The prophet said “There are those of my nation who are victorious and will stay victorious till the day they face their fate and die” narrated by (Al-Bukhari 252/4). And the Prophet also said: “There is still a group of my nation fighting for justice victorious over their enemy until the last of them fights the Antichrist” narrated by Abu Daud (The book of Jihad, Chapter 4)" funny, no mention of IRAQ! Baculus
As far as I know, Al-Queda wasn't even mentioned as an organization until the late 90's-2001. This is probably relating to the Muslim Brotherhood, who have been around since at least the 60's. As far as I know, Al-Queda, if it exists as an organization, is a collection of former anti-Soviet fighters. (In fact, some have said that "Al-Queda," which means "the Base," is actually short for "database," which was used by the anti-Soviet fighters to communicate and store data.) But I am sure any organization would use the former experiences during the 70's to build upon in their efforts.

Air Force Cane
there are literally thousands of internet hits using the spelling I did. I didn't realize there were Arabic transliteration experts on the site. Let's ask Bin-Laden how he wants it spelled in English shall we?
SkinsHokieFan
It is pronounced Kai-DAA So Qaeda, which means the base (it isn't short for database, when you start reading the Quran as a kid you first read the "Qaeda" which gives you a "base" to read arabic)

Air Force Cane
"one of the first Muslims born in Washington DC" that is a cool story, but I have to believe there were Embassy staff/dependents of Muslim countries who had kids here in DC since the 1800s right? Not to mention American Black Muslims in DC who have been following Elijah Mohammed since the 1960s...

Although most embassy kids would have been born on embassy property as far as I know

Now that is a very astute observation. Al Qaeda is one of many threats. They all share information and training and they all share similar goals - the defeat of the west and the spread of fundamentalist islam. It also leads back to the reality that the war against terrorism in not just a war against al Qaeda. In fact one could say that al Qaeda is but one branch of their military. While they took the name "the base" to signify their central importance to the jihad, there were other dangerous organizations before them and there will be others when they are gone. What scares me most is the group that we have not yet heard of that is inspired by the success of 9/11. They arent fighting over Iraq or any other nonsense. They are fighting to spread the word of god (as they see it) and that makes them the most dangerous threat on the planet.
Air Force Cane
excellent points Mike- until everyone in the West understands that we will not be able to win the war..
Baculus
I have seen so many spellings of Al-Queda, or Al-Qaeda. They all share information and training and they all share similar goals - the defeat of the west and the spread of fundamentalist islam. We really don't know that. Some have even questioned the true existence of Al-Qaeda and how organized it really is as an organization. For years we never heard about Al-Qaeda - the Muslin Brotherhood is more well-known organization. In fact, you rarely, if ever, heard of this Al-Qaeda organization until basically 9-11. A lot of what we thought we knew, or have known, has been wrong. The organization, in fact, could be a red herring while other threats are on the horizon. A lot of what we "know" about the organization is simply questionable. Names get assigned to individuals as being "Al-Qaeda" when often, we just don't know. BTW, there are some that have mentioned that "The base" wasn't chosen since they are the "base" of operations, but "The Base" is short for "database," which was the used by the anti-Soviet fighters that are thought to make up some of the Al-Qaeda hierarchy.
