I was talkin to my buddy 2day at work about football and he said his brother is subscribed to ESPN insider...he told me that one rumour was that the jets planned to put the franchise tag on abraham and then trade him to us for Ramsey...i was wondering if anyone else has heard anything about this...i always thought when a team franchised a player that meant that he couldnt be traded or cut or whatever and my buddy also said that if they franchised him and traded him we'd have to give up 2 first rounders..im not sure if thats true? and he also told me some rumours about randel either goin to chicago or the comin to the skins but the cap would be a problem there..there was some other interesting ones but just wanted to know if anyone knew anything about this?

thanx

Franchise Tag+ John Abraham= Lots and lots of money.

Redskins+ 2006 Cap= No money

John Abraham+ Redskins= never.

While I agree that our cap situation does not put us in a position to go after Abraham, I disagree with your logic.

The tag will average the top five at his position, correct? Wouldn't an average quite possibly be a little lower that what we might get him for were we to compete for him in the FA market? I think we might actually save a little money by going the Franchise tag / trade route.

Regardless of how much we save, I think he's still outside our price range with the cap in place, no matter which route the team tries to go.

While I agree with most posters that this is a long shot. Just because he has the franchise tag shouldn't be the main reason. We could make a deal with the Jets that we would reach a contract agreement with him before the deal goes through. However, I still don't think it happens.

John Abraham's agents are prepared for the Jets to place the franchise tag on their client and Abraham himself is dismayed, no longer wanting to remain with the team. He'll likely get his wish in the end, because the Jets are almost certain to use him in a trade in and around the draft to either move up in the draft or to gain more picks.

Abraham is sick of being jerked around by the Jets, and I don't blame him personally. Not playing in that playoff game was a statement to the team. Baisically he was telling them he was not willing to put his health on the line of they were unwilling to give him a long term contract that would give him a little insurance. He had played out his rookie contract and played very well, now he expected to be compensated with a long term contract and the Jets were showing no signs that they intended to do so. In fact they were showing all signs that they would franchise him, which would keep him from being able to get a contract with another team even. Turned out they did franchise him, which gave him no security for the future, and he's rightfully pissed. He did his part, now he wanted his fair share. Players hate the franchise tag, it's only one year and no guarantee's for the future at all. No stability for a family, just an uncomfortable situation for the player. Any player good enough to be franchised deserves a good contract in my opinion. If you as the team are not willing to give it to him yourself, let the player move on to where he can get said contract. I hate the franchise tag.

I don't think he will end up here, at least I doubt it given the current situation. Would be a welcome addition though if he did come. Once he's taken care of finantially he will not be a "problem player" anymore.

I don't think our D-line gets enough credit. It is tough to run against those guys.

tough to run against, yes, but if our secondary isn't 100% healthy, easier to pass against

our pass rush is average, not dominating

what saves us is having Taylor and Springs in the secondary

The Jets franchised him so we have the opportunity to try to sign him to a long-term deal and we would have to provide a mutually agreed upon compesation deal with Jets.

I do not believe that we can trade for him and pay him the franchise amount. We need to strike a contract agreement with Abraham before we can agree upon a compensation package with the Jets.

They get plenty of credit for stopping the run. What we need to improve on is pressure with the front 4. Daniels and Wynn have had some solid performances in the past for us, but it's not consistent enough to warrant standing still on this issue. Flat out we need a pass rusher although I doubt Abraham is the answer for us. We may have to develop someone in FA or take a risk on a 2nd-3rd rounder in the draft because pass rushers are getting pricey these days.
