Insider: NFC East team needs

Washington Redskins

It's unlikely that anything the Redskins do in free agency will match the showy offseason move they already made in hiring Al Saunders as offensive coordinator. Joe Gibbs is an excellent coach, but the offense grew stale under his watch last season. With the addition of Saunders' creative mind and (ideally) another playmaker, the Redskins' offense could be ready to flourish. Washington is headed in the right direction and might be just a few players away from becoming a legitimate playoff contender.

Wide receiver: The team's top offseason priority should be to find someone who can take pressure off WR Santana Moss. Opponents often committed two or three defenders to stopping Moss, and his teammates still weren't able to make plays. David Patten and James Thrash are strictly role players. This team needs to find a legitimate threat (preferably a big receiver) to team with Moss.

Defensive end: Phillip Daniels' eight sacks last season were a bit misleading, considering four of them came late in the season against overmatched Dallas LT Torrin Tucker. Daniels is nearing the end, and Washington needs a legitimate pass-rush threat to take his place.

Outside linebacker: LaVar Arrington and Warrick Holdman both could be gone. Arrington probably has burned too many bridges with the coaching staff, and Holdman appeared lost in the system. MLB Lemar Marshall and SLB Marcus Washington can hold down the fort, so merely finding a decent player who fits into coordinator Gregg Williams' scheme might be enough.

Guard: RG Randy Thomas is a perfect fit in Washington's offense, but he tore his ACL late last season and won't be ready for Week 1. Ancient veteran Ray Brown has retired. LG Derrick Dockery can be a mauling run blocker, but is too inconsistent. Safety: Unrestricted free agent Ryan Clark might want to see what his value is on the open market. Backup Matt Bowen isn't an adequate long-term replacement. FS Sean Taylor is a playmaker and an enforcer, but is a little too unstable off the field to be counted on.

While the Redskins figure to make a few additions on defense, the offense has more glaring needs, particularly the void at wide receiver opposite Moss. Washington probably will consider Reggie Wayne or David Givens, assuming those unrestricted free agents don't re-sign with their respective teams before they hit the open market. Even Owens could get a long look from risk-taking owner Daniel Snyder. The addition of Saunders alone will make the Redskins a legitimate threat in the NFC.

Not a whole lot of time spent writing that article. The Colts said a couple of weeks ago that they would keep Reggie Wayne off of the market. I'm not sure why Holdman would be gone if he also expects Arrington to be gone - Holdman if nothing else would provide depth. The comment on Arrington burning bridges with the staff was stale about two months ago. The decision regarding LA at this point really revolves around his cap hit at this point. Not too mention the fact that the Skins have already denied interest in TO.

"Washington is headed in the right direction and might be just a few players away from becoming a legitimate playoff contender"

"The addition of Saunders alone will make the Redskins a legitimate threat in the NFC."

  SOmeone tell me how this makes since. When do you reach the 2nd round of the playoffs and not be considered a legitimate playoff contender. Well unless we switch our team with Arizona who every year is the juicy pick to do something and then at the end of the year they are A COUPLE PLAYERS AWAY.

And they make you pay a subscription for this crap. How is this insider information when everyone already knows this.

I dont even know why i even go to the NFL section of ESPN until August.
