Mike Flanagan

Ht./Wt.: 6-5/301

Position: C

Born: 11/10/73, Washington, DC.

High school: Rio Americano (Sacramento).

College: UCLA.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Is intelligent and moves extremely well. Shows great balance and pulls effectively on

screens and toss plays. Reaches linebackers easily and sustains his blocks. Makes good use of his

hands and blocking angles. Handles pre-snap calls and adjustments and rarely makes mistakes. Snaps

consistently on shotgun plays. Excels at picking up stunts and blitzes. Redirects easily and rarely

takes false steps.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal strength, and has some trouble vs. big defenders in the gap or over his

nose. Doesn’t get much movement. Won’t always reach explosive one-gap penetrators.

Bottom line: Flanagan is very athletic and technically sound. He won’t overpower his man often, but

he already is a fine starter and has upside after only three years of playing center.

Career data

Transactions/career notes: Selected by Green Bay Packers in third round (90th pick overall) of 1996

NFL draft. ... Signed by Packers (July 17, 1996). ... On injured reserve with leg injury (August

19, 1996-entire season). ... On physically unable to perform list with ankle injury (August 19,

1997-entire season). ... Traded by Packers to Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed draft pick

(August 31, 1998); trade later voided because Flanagan failed physical (September 1, 1998). ...

Granted free agency (February 12, 1999). ... Re-signed by Packers (March 25, 1999).

Honors: Played in Pro Bowl (2003 season).

Comment:

He shows that he has the foot quickness to get up to the second level not only block linebackers

but sustain his blocks. He has good use of his hands and excels in situations where he can block

back and take advantage of blocking angles. He plays a very intelligent game in the middle and he

makes all of the pre-snap calls and adjustment and he rarely makes a mistake. He has good strength

in his hands and locks on very well. He is very consistent with his snap in the shotgun formation

and he shows great ability to pass off and pick up with his guards to handle line stunts and

blitzes. The most outstanding part of his game is his footwork and his movement. He lacks ideal

strength and he will have difficulty with a big defender in the gap or on his nose that has good

bulk and explosive charge. He seldom gets beat badly however he does not get a lot of movement in

that situation.

Ht./Wt.: 6-2/313

Position: C

Born: 11/7/79, Cleveland, OH.

High school: St. Ignatius (Cleveland).

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Has good intelligence, quickness and explosiveness. Gets good leverage, works hard to

finish blocks and can get movement in the running game. Is very good at working to the second level

and can block linebackers. Moves well laterally and has a good punch. Is difficult to budge. Can

play guard or center.

Weaknesses: Lacks lower-body strength and can be overpowered in the middle. Has durability issues.

Bottom line: Bentley makes all the line calls and adjustments and rarely makes a mistake. He has

had some injury issues in the past, but he continues to improve.

Jeff Mitchell

Ht./Wt.: 6-4/300

Position: C

Born: 1/29/74, Dallas, TX.

High school: Countryside (Clearwater, Fla.).

College: Florida.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Rarely takes false steps, has the quickness to beat defenders and usually gets into

great position. Plays with a mean streak, is physical at the point of attack, gets great hand

placement and has the upper-body strength to maintain separation. Keeps his head up, does nice job

of helping guards when combo blocking on the second level and takes good angles to blocks. Has good

body control in space and above-average range and can pull and trap. Reads defenses well, has good

football intelligence and keeps the offensive line on the same page. Is balanced, can redirect

inside after starting outside and rarely is beaten by double moves.

Weaknesses: Is undersized and far more effective when uncovered. Lacks lower-body strength, doesn’t

play with leverage and can’t push the pile in the running game. Must play with perfect technique to

hold his ground at the point of attack.

Bottom line: Mitchell’s age/injury profile makes him somewhat risky, and he has some character

concerns, but he is relentless, rarely makes mistakes and plays with sound technique.

Comment:

Takes good angles to blocks and generally does a good job of cutting linebackers off at the second

level. Shows good body control in space and has the lateral mobility to adjust to the moving target

at the second level. Has above-average range and is capable of pulling and trapping effectively.

However, Mitchell is undersized and he is far more effective when he is uncovered than when a

massive two-gap defenders line up over his head. Lacks ideal bulk, isn't going to engulf many

defenders at the point of attack and isn't going to wear many defenders down over the course of the

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Is physical, tenacious and efficient. Takes good angles, plays with a wide base and uses

his hands well. Runs well for his size. Gets good knee bend and rarely gives ground to bull

rushers. Reads defenses well, makes accurate line calls and is a leader on the field. Is durable.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal agility and initial quickness. Has trouble at the second level and isn’t as

effective on pulls and traps as he once was. Has a slow pass set and struggles to prevent

penetration against explosive one-gap defenders.

Bottom Line: McCollum is slowing down, but he rarely makes mistakes and is relentless. He still is

an adequate starter.

Comment:

Runs fairly well for size, is big enough to engulf undersized defenders and does an adequate job of

getting outside on screens. Shows good awareness on pass protection, picks up the blitz fairly well

and does a good job of helping his guards when nothing comes to him. However, McCollum is a far

better football player than he is an athlete and he is on the downside of his career. Lacks the

lateral mobility to adjust to the moving target in pace, doesn't have great initial quickness and

has some problems getting into position at the second level. Has lost a step with age and isn't as

effective pulling and trapping as was earlier in career.

Ht./Wt.: 6-5/300

Position: C

Born: 12/27/74, Jackson, TN.

High school: University (Jackson, Tenn).

College: Tennessee.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Has a great grasp of the center position. Is intelligent with good leadership skills. Is

athletic, mobile and tall, with long arms. Is best in space. Is consistently in good position. Good

at directing traffic and using his hands. Has improved his strength. Has the quickness to reach the

second level and can consistently block moving targets. Has excellent balance. Recognizes and

adjusts to blitzes and line stunts.

Weaknesses: Lacks bulk and strength. Is best when uncovered. Has trouble vs. massive nose tackles.

Won’t push pile in the running game. His durability and age are concerns.

Bottom line: Teague was having his best season in 2004 prior to breaking his left leg. He has a

great feel for line calls, and could be one of the top 15 centers in the NFL right now.

Comment:

He's intelligent, has good leadership skills and calls a good game. He is tall and has long arms.

He is athletic and mobile. Has quick feet and shows good agility. He's at his best in space. He

does a great job of helping his OG's in the running and passing games. However, Teague lacks ideal

bulk and strength. He's at his best when uncovered. Will have trouble in matchups versus massive

NT's. Is tall and has trouble staying low. Lacks ideal leg strength and base. Won't push the pile

in the running game. Is more of a position-and-wall-off type. Lacks explosive upper body strength.

Does not show explosive power in his initial punch. Gets pushed around too much by stronger DL that

bull rush him in pass pro. Will get driven back into the QB occasionally vs. elite NT bull rushers.

Born: 11/21/78, Mankato, MN.

High school: Valley (West Des Moines, Iowa).

College: Kansas.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Is smart and makes all the line calls up front. Takes excellent angles to the second

level in the running game. Has a good feel for stunts, twists and delayed blitzes. Is a physical,

aggressive run blocker.

Weaknesses: Struggles in space. Gets out-leveraged too often on the line. Isn't real explosive. Is

sometimes too quick to come off combo run blocks and allow penetration. Has trouble protecting

edges.

Botton line: Hartwig made strides in his second year as a starter in 2004 and seems to have a good

upside.

Comment:

He is quick off the snap. He shows solid in-line quickness. He shows solid snap to set quickness.

He will play with a bit of a mean streak - will drop down and cut when he feels he is beat. He is a

good athlete. He shows solid hand use - solid technician. He plays with very good leverage. He is a

smart player that has a very good feel for blocking schemes. He is very polished for a player that

was a former college DT and only played his last two seasons on offense. His biggest weakness is

his play strength - needs to get stronger. Will fall off base blocks too often. He will struggle

with a powerful DT on his nose. He does not show a lot of pop 1x1. He struggles to finish in the

run game.

Position: C

Born: 6/12/79, Buffalo, TX.

High school: Westlake (Austin, Texas).

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Has good height and decent bulk, with the frame to get bigger. Has a good first step and

takes correct angles to blocks. Runs smoothly with good speed. Will reach the second level without

a problem and can consistently hit a moving target.

Weaknesses: Has a weak lower body and lacks the strength to sustain blocks. Can’t consistently

anchor vs. the bull rush. Has trouble getting a push vs. two-gap nose tackles and often needs

double-team help.

Bottom Line: McKinney is young and could develop into a solid starter. He must improve his

leverage, base, awareness and stamina.

He does a good job with his first step and angles as a blocker. He has above average mobility. He

runs smoothly and has good speed. Will reach the second level without a problem and shows the

ability to consistently hit the moving target. He plays with good leverage and balance. He is a

position blocker that wins with angles. He does show some toughness and will work to finish, but he

doesn't always have the strength to sustain even after he has locked on. He needs more experience.

He must improve his leverage, base, awareness and stamina in order to take the next step in 2005.

Strengths: Is a good athlete with solid in-line quickness. Can pull and trap effectively and chip

Weaknesses: Has average height and a dumpy frame; most of his limitations are strength-related.

Doesn’t have an explosive or powerful lower body; can get overpowered and must improve his

technique. Gets lazy at times.

Bottom line: Fowler is a solid young backup, but he doesn’t play much because he lacks versatility.

He’s good enough to start at center; he has played better than Jeff Faine at times.

Comment:

He'll occasionally have trouble hitting the moving target in space or mirroring and sliding vs. quick double-move. However,

Hutchinson is experienced, gritty and tough. He's technically sound and efficient. Shows adequate initial quickness. Does a

great job with his first step and angles in the running game. Works hard to finish. If feisty and plays with a mean streak.

Gets out quickly on pulls and traps. Takes good angles and does a decent job of reaching the second level. Plays under

control. Knows his assignments and follows them through. He plays with balance and leverage in pass pro. Has decent quickness

in his short-set. Will stay low and hold up well vs. the bull rush. Rarely loses a battle once he has locked on.

Position: G

Born: 7/12/80, Honolulu, HI.

High school: Farrington (Honolulu, Hawaii).

College: Hawaii.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Is tough and physical and plays with a little edge to his game. Has an excellent motor, very good playing strength

and a strong initial punch. Plays with excellent leverage in the running game and is solid when pulling on counters. Is a

great anchor in pass protection.

Weaknesses: Needs to improve his balance and body control. Can be late off the ball. Needs to improve his awareness in pass

pro and is not consistent protecting the edges.

Bottom Line: Manuwai has short arms but remains powerful and explosive. He has the potential to develop into an upper echelon

offensive guard.

Comment:

He has an excellent motor - will chase the ball down field. He shows very good play strength - strong initial punch to get

the defender off balance. Can absorb and hold his ground vs. power DT's. While he has a chance to be a dominating player at

OG, he is still a little raw in some areas. He needs to improve his balance and body control - can look awkward at times

trying to adjust in space. Can be late off the ball - allow early penetration right at the snap. Needs to improve his

awareness in pass pro - will have late reactions to stunts and delayed blitz. Overall, he is a young OG that gets better all

the time - he is short with short arms, but he is powerful and explosive. He has excellent upside and could develop into an

upper echelon OG in the National Football League.

Strengths: Displays excellent technique and shows good leverage and body control. Plays well in space and can adjust to a

moving target. Is an effective second-level blocker with great quickness off the snap. Does a good job with pre-snap reads

and adjustments.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal strength and power and struggles as a run blocker. Can get dominated in the short area and will never

be able to physically match up with more powerful defensive linemen.

Bottom Line: Mahan should be a solid starter for a long time because of his technique and athleticism.

Comment:

He is much better in space than in a short area, and will adjust to hitting a moving target. He also impresses you with

excellent quickness off the snap of the ball, and really attacks the defensive linemen in a hurry. He is also good on pulls,

makes good contact to the outside, and has solid overall quickness. He also comes out of his stance low, has the ability to

cut and reach blocks, and his overall range is good. All of Mahan's problems come in the area of strength and power. He will

not dominate at the point of attack is not a very physical run blocker, and will struggle to move big defensive linemen out

of the hole. He is not a player that you want in a lot of short area fistfights where he is not allowed to play with angles

and leverage.

Strengths: Has massive size and strength. Improved his conditioning, motor and effort last year. Has a pulverizing initial

punch. Plays with leverage, knee bend and a wide lower body. Creates huge holes on down blocks. Is explosive and surprisingly

nimble on pull and trap blocks.

Weaknesses: Is top-heavy, doesn’t change direction well and has just average recovery quickness. Bends at the waist and drops

his head when tired. Makes some mental mistakes. Could be a stronger finisher.

Bottom line: Fonoti is a mauling run blocker who could grow into a dominant, complete player if he improves his technique and

reaction time.

Comment:

He is a mauler OG that can absorb the defender. He was in much better shape this season and showed dramatic improvement in

terms of his motor and effort. He used to wear down easily, but it is him who seemed to wear down his opponent last season.

He has a big, wide lower body. He plays with solid leverage and knee bend. He has an explosive lower body - can roll his hips

and get into a defender. He is a good athlete with good foot quickness for his size. Can lose his balance on base blocks when

he has to step and reach. When he tires he becomes a waist-bender and will drop his head in pass pro. Will have mental

mistakes. Would like to see him be a more complete finisher for a player his size. He has trouble finding the moving target

at the 2nd level.

Position: G

Born: 3/26/79, Rio Hondo, TX.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Has good quickness and a feel for blocking angles. Plays with a mean streak. Moves well laterally and can get into

position and execute assignments. Has the mobility and athleticism to make plays at the second level. Adjusts well to moving

targets. Comes off the ball low and balanced, and has good pop at the point of attack. Can redirect and handle pass-rush

moves. Is rarely beaten off the ball and can handle quicker one-gap defenders.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal bulk, power and strength. Struggles to sustain blocks if out of position. Lacks recognition skills,

as well as leverage, at times.

Bottom line: Garza’s career has been marred by injuries, so durability always will be a concern. But he is a relentless

player with the intangibles to be a good leader and the athletic ability to move into the upper echelon of guards.

He has quick feet and really has a good feel for blocking angles. He has good lateral movement and shows the ability to get

into position in order to execute his assignment. He has very good mobility and is certainly athletic enough to make plays at

the second level. He has the ability to redirect and is athletic enough to handle a variety of pass rush moves. He rarely

gets beat off the ball and can handle quicker one gap type defenders. Unfortunately, as athletic as Garza is, he lacks the

ideal bulk and power to be a punishing blocker in the interior run game. He does not possess great overall strength and

struggles at times to sustain his blocks if he does not good initial position. He is not going to move the line of scrimmage

in short yardage situations.

Brock Gutierrez

Ht./Wt.: 6-3/304

Position: G

Born: 9/25/73, Charlotte, MI.

High school: Charlotte (Mich.).

College: Central Michigan.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Provides depth at all three interior line spots. Gets great hand placement, has the upper-body strength to maintain separation and knows how to control defenders once locked on. Takes great angles to blocks, almost always is in good position, plays with a mean streak and is relentless once engaged. Plays under control in space, is good at adjusting to moving targets on the second level and has good footwork in pass protection.

Weaknesses: Lacks power and size, doesn’t provide pop at the point of attack and will get overwhelmed by bigger nose tackles. Loses leverage too easily, isn’t quick and struggles to keep explosive one-gap defenders out of the backfield.

Bottom line: Gutierrez was an adequate starter in place of injured Jeremy Newberry last year, but he is a much better fit in a reserve role.

Takes great angles to his blocks and almost always gets into good position. Plays with a mean streak, is tough and relentless once engaged and plays with sound overall technique. Plays under control in space and does a nice job of adjusting to the moving target on the second level. Shows good footwork in pass-protection, works to keep the defender in front of his face and rarely gets beaten by double moves. However, Gutierrez is an over achiever that lacks great power and size. Doesn't get much pop at the point of attack, will get overwhelmed by bigger nose tackles and doesn't have the lower-body strength to get movement in the running game. Allows the defender to get under his pads and loses leverage too easily. of time.

Weaknesses: Lacks experience and technique. Doesn’t always redirect well or handle countermoves vs. quick inside penetrators. Sometimes fails to play with leverage.

Comment:

He has adequate overall strength, he does an effective job of pushing the DT's to the inside, and he does a pretty nice job of sustaining his blocks. His overall strength, power and the ability to control a DT seems good, although his techniques are not always top notch. He has good overall hand use, he will get some separation, and he seems to play with a good motor, and he appears to have tenacity and really works to finish his blocks. Although you like him athletically and in space, he is still not an accomplished pass blocker, but much of it is likely due to lack of experience rather than a lack of AA. He doesn't always do a great job of redirecting and if he starts one way, it is difficult for him to handle several moves vs. quick inside penetrators.

Comment:

He has outstanding overall size and bulk and good speed and movement for a big man. He shows decent short area pass protection and comes off the ball with pretty good explosiveness and quickness. You like his movement skills when he is attacking the defense in both the run game and the passing game and his versatility at OG and OT make him an interesting player. All of his problems start to show up when he is asked to move laterally and become an east-west type player. As good as his speed is, it appears to be straight line, and when you ask him to slide and adjust, he is not the same player. His ability to sustain blocks and keep his feet moving is suspect at times, and you don't always see great balance. He doesn't adjust to a moving target very well, and despite his speed, he is not a great space player. He needs to become a better lateral player, and his east and west movement needs to become as comfortable as his north and south movements. When that happens, this is a young guy who could develop into a pretty solid football player, and there is every reason to think that his progress will continue.

He does an excellent job of finishing blocks and will engulf undersized defenders at the point of attack. Has learned how to

position himself and has a better knowledge of angles and blocking schemes than he did earlier in his career. In pass

protection, he flashes a quick pass set and does a nice job anchoring with his inside leg to avoid being beat to his inside.

His lateral movement is limited and he will get beat when trying to redirect vs. double moves and as a result will become a

waist bender if out of position. He lacks the quickness to consistently get to the second level and has trouble keeping up

with the moving target. His overall technique is not sound, he relies on his size too much and he needs to improve his

footwork in order to become a premier pass protector.

He is excellent in a short area, makes contact, and can overpower at the point of attack. He has the ability in pass

protection to lock on and ride the DE past the QB, and because of his strong hands and the ability to hold and control a

defender, it's tough to work double moves against him. In the run game, if he locks on, it's over. He cannot be overpowered

at the point of attack, and he handles big strong two gap defenders very well. He is very good in short yardage and goal line

situations because of his tenacity, and he has a nastiness to his game. He does not have great range and movement on the

second level, and is not as good in space as he is in a short area. His overall athleticism is borderline, and if he can't

get his hands on defenders initially, he can struggle vs. athletic guys.

he has just adequate lower body strength. He is quick in the short-area but lacks elite athletic ability. Will have trouble

competitive, gets good leg drive and can get movement in the running game. Is intelligent, rarely is out of position and can

force defenders past the quarterback.

Weaknesses: Lacks quickness, struggles in space and has problems getting to linebackers and sustaining blocks. Can be beat by

speed rushers on the edge, loses his leverage at times and shows poor effort getting downfield and making plays.

Bottom line: An adequate player in all phases of the game, Gragg does a solid job.

Born: 11/4/74, Lexington, SC.

High school: Swansea (S.C.).

College: Auburn.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Has outstanding size and the power to be dominant at the point of attack. Rarely loses one-on-one battles, has

strong hands and can wear out undersized defensive ends. Is better as a run blocker, where he can move the pile.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal change-of-direction skills and has some trouble redirecting. Is extremely susceptible to double

moves, loses balance easily and has problems keeping edge rushers from turning corner. Is uncomfortable in space and lunges

at blocks. Has poor stamina.

Bottom line: When Riley is healthy and in shape, he is a dominating, run-blocking right tackle who can consistently open

holes, but he is very raw in pass protection.

Weaknesses: Lacks ideal size and strength. Struggles in short areas and vs. big, powerful defenders. Doesn’t finish well and has poor balance.

Bottom line: Kosier must keep improving his strength and adjust better in pass protection, but he has both upside and immediate value as a versatile backup.

Comment:

Fires out of his stance quickly and plays with leverage. He takes very good angles as a run blocker. Is adept on pulls and traps. Has adequate athletic ability and good quickness and speed. He's a hard worker who has continued to improve. He shows the quick-set and feet to hold up in space as a pass blocker. He is tough and aggressive. However, Kosier needs to continue to improve his bulk. He has below average strength. He struggles in the phone booth. He lacks the bulk and lower body strength to anchor vs. bigger two-gap DT's. He gets driven back into the QB too often vs. powerful bull rushers. He has a narrow base and just decent upper body power. He fights hard but lacks the bulk and strength to finish a lot of his blocks. He seems tentative in too much space as a pass blocker at LOT.

He is a much better pass blocker than run blocker right now. He is a finesse player - needs to learn to play more nasty, tough and physical. He shows excellent initial quickness out of his stance. Can set quickly in the passing game. He shows good foot quickness and lateral slide ability. He plays with good balance and body control. Good overall use of hands but he does not have heavy hands. He gives solid effort to get downfield and find blocks. He does not have very good anchor ability - gets walked back vs. power DE's. He is a finesse run blocker. He does not play with good leverage and struggles to get movement at the POA.

2006 NFL Free Agents: Offensive Linemen

By: Thomas J Gersey

http://www.footballsfuture.com/2006/freeagentsOL.html

1. Steve Hutchinson, RG, Seattle

Hutchinson is widely considered the prize in this year's group of free agent offensive linemen. A solid, technically sound guard, Hutchinson won't wow you by obliterating pass rushers. He will however hold his ground against anybody in the league. Still only 28 years old, he has become a perennial Pro Bowler, and was an All-Pro this past season. 6-5, 313 lbs, he is built like a left tackle, but he uses his size as leverage on the right side of the line to hold his ground and prevent the opponent from peeling off and making plays. He plays under control, getting good first steps in the run game, while getting off the line in the passing game, allowing him to create proper holes for his runners, and giving his passers adequate time to get through their reads. He also pulls well, and would be a great fit on a team focused on the ground game while supplanting it with a conservative passing game.

GOOD FITS: Seattle, Minnesota, Washington, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, Oakland, New York Jets

EARLY PICK: Seattle has been going through this for some time now, knowing that their best players are going to be free agents. First it was Walter Jones, then Hasselbeck and Alexander. Now Hutchinson creates a dilemma as both he and Alexander are free agents this season. Many consider re-signing Alexander a no-brainer, but there have been some in the know who believe maintaining the core of the offensive line and handing the job to Maurice Morris may be the more prudent move. Most likely, the 'Hawks will give a long term deal to Alexander, while franchising Hutchinson for this season, then weighing their options next year. They have needs at defensive end and wide receiver, so they will have some decisions to make. If Seattle does let Hutchinson walk, Washington and Minnesota seem like perfect fits. Both need a right guard, and with the potential departure of Culpepper in Minnesota, both run a similar ball control offense, predicated on minimizing mistakes, that would highlight Hutchinson's skills. If neither is a fit, Cincy, Tampa, Oakland and the Jets could all use a Pro Bowl guard.

2. LeCharles Bentley, C, New Orleans

Bentley has good size at 6'2, 313, but it better known for his quickness. Quick footwork gets him out of his stance, and out blocking linebackers when necessary. His is lithe and swift off the snap, and is the rare center who can get out and pull. For all of his size, he does tend to get pushed around by very physical nose tackles, as his slight lack of lower body strength keeps him from maintaining position against a fierce bull rush. However, Bentley is tenacious and fiesty, and will not give up even when he appears to be overmatched. He is smart and consistent, and makes good adjustments at the line. Only 26, Bentley is better when he can get out and move, unblocked, and would fit best with a team that can surround him with Pro Bowl caliber players.

GOOD FITS: Buffalo, Atlanta, Carolina, New England, NY Giants, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, New Orleans

EARLY PICK: New Orleans has a few free agents, but Bentley is the only one who is a must re-sign. It is possible he would be franchised, but the question remains how wise that would be with a center. However, with the Saints likely to rebuild around Matt Leinart or Vince Young, protecting their investment makes the most sense. Look for the Saints to retain Bentley at any and all costs. If not, any of the above listed contenders would be a fantastic fit. Most notably, the Steelers are said to be very interested in Bentley.

3. Jon Runyan, RT, Philadelphia

At 6'7, 330, Runyan is a mammoth blocker who locks on to an end shuts him down at the point of attack. Only the fastest, most athletic ends can hope to evade Runyon, but anything less than the best, and Runyon will clamp down, and control a pass rusher. He excels in short yardage situations, where his nasty streak comes into play, and he can maul everything in front of him. A very good run blocker, he is a superb pass blocker, acting as a wall between the defender and his quarterback, forcing them far outside their rush lanes. He is seldom beaten by double moves, and for all of his size, has a sound technique. His only drawback is his age, though linemen have a greater life expectancy in the league than other players. Would be worth a 3-4 year deal from a contender.

GOOD FITS: Philadelphia, Atlanta, Baltimore, New England, San Francisco

EARLY PICK: Runyon is likely to remain in Philadelphia, where they can't afford to lose him. Atlanta is in the market for elite lineman, as is San Francisco, who has holes everywhere. New England and Baltimore could use upgrades at Right Tackle, and Runyon is the best of the bunch.

4. Mike Flanagan, C, Green Bay

Flanagan is emblematic of the new breed of lineman, smaller, but able to rely on good technique with his hands and feet to excel in run block schemes. Flanagan is at his best when allowed to block back, or to set up precise blocking angles, and would fit well with a team that focuses on blocking schemes, rather than a "smash mouth" style. Flanagan is consistent, and rarely makes a mistake. However, he can be overpowered, but even then, he does not get beat so badly as to pose a threat to his quarterback. He also performs well in the shotgun formation, and shows great ability to adjust to stunts and blitzes, picking up players who beat his guards. Like Runyon, age is an issue.

GOOD FITS: Green Bay, Atlanta, New England, Tampa Bay, Buffalo, Carolina

EARLY PICK: After the departure of Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle last season, and the debacle that followed, the Packers would be loathe to let another elite blocker walk this season. Expect the Packers to bring Flanagan back as they attempt to squeeze a final season out of Brett Favre. If he walks, Flanagan would excel in Atlanta where they run similar blocking schemes to the Broncos, relying on trapping and pulling. Buffalo and Carolina may lose their centers, creating holes in those lines.

5. Jeff Backus, LT, Detroit

Still only 28, this former first rounder is your typical fill in the blank kind of lineman. Nothing super special, he won't hurt you. You can stick him into the line, and forget about him. He is tough, aggressive, and intelligent, with a sound work ethic and technique. He lacks ideal size, but he will scrap and fight when he feels he is getting beat. Will never give up on a play, though he may still get beat by an elite pass rusher. He will never overpower a player, but he also will rarely get run over. Slightly above average, he should be on the shopping list for any team with severe problems on the left side.

GOOD FITS: Detroit, Cleveland, San Francisco

EARLY PICK: Detroit will likely keep Backus in the Silver and Blue, but a team like Cleveland could look to Backus if LJ Shelton were to walk. The Niners are also in a major rebuilding mode, and Backus would be the perfect low cost option, someone they could plug in and leave ther for 10 years.

OTHER FREE AGENTS OF NOTE:

LJ Shelton, LT, Cleveland: Shelton is a massive left tackle, who has just never fully developed. Excellent talent, but something has always been lacking. If he could harness his ability, and learn to be more of a force inside, Shelton could be a real steal. San Fran should take a look at him, and the Lions should take a look at this Michigan native should Backus walk.

Vicor Riley, RT, Houston: Excels against smaller ends, and can get beat by more athletic players. An 8 year veteran, he has good technique and strength, and has learned how to makeup for initial mistakes. Not an elite lineman, he is a solid upgrade for many teams. May be a good fit in Arizona.

Jeff Mitchell, C, Car/Melvin Fowler, C, Minn/Justin Hartwig, C, Tennessee/Andy McCollum, C, St Louis: Along with Flanagan and Bentley, there is a bumper crop of centers this season. Most teams will likely keep their centers, but as soon as one walks, look for a game of musical chairs to take place as teams scramble to fill needs. All four of these guys would fit in well anywhere. None is a pro bowl caliber player, but all are solid, dependable veterans.

Top Free Agents Discussed at Senior Bowl

By Tim Yotter

Date: Jan 28, 2006

Thanks to sources at the Senior Bowl, we have updates on two NFL free agents who should be attractive and legitimate interests for the Vikings.

While head coach Brad Childress can be guarded with some of his analysis of the current Vikings roster, he has stated the obvious more than once—the Vikings likely will need to upgrade on the offensive line and find a feature running back.

Upgrading the offensive line might simply mean re-signing a healthy Toniu Fonoti and counting on the continued development of big Marcus Johnson in his second season. Fonoti, acquired from the San Diego Chargers during the 2005 season, took longer than anticipated to recover from a broken bone in his hand, then started one game before injuring his groin and being placed on injured reserve. He came to the Vikings weighing more than 400 pounds and the team was trying to get him around 380 before playing him. That didn’t happen, and now Fonoti’s representatives would like to see him get to around 370 pounds to make him a more valuable prospect in free agency.

But if the Vikings determine that upgrading the offensive line has to include an additional free agent from another team, then a likely candidate would be Philadelphia right tackle Jon Runyan. Childress’ desire to build up front and his familiarity with Runyan would seem to be a natural fit.

A league source at the Senior Bowl told Scout.com that Runyan would like to stay with the Eagles and might be willing to accept a little less than market value to do so, but not much less.

Runyan has been extremely durable over his 10-year career, playing in 154 games with 144 starts. He has been a mainstay on the Eagles offensive line since the fourth-round draft pick of the Houston Oilers signed with Philadelphia in 2000, starting every regular season game since then and making the Pro Bowl in 2002.

The durable veteran lineman feels that he can play at least three to four more years and would like to get a long-term deal, according to the source.

Washington Redskins

What Happened Last Year?

Washington made an improbable run into the divisional round of the NFC playoffs after starting the season 5-6. Improbable to most, but not to loyal readers of the FoxSports.com power rankings, which had them ranked 10th in the NFL before they began their run to the playoffs.

On offense, Washington was #12 in DVOA (up from #28 in 2004), #10 in passing offense and #9 in the league when running the ball. The Redskins defense was stellar once again, ranking only behind Chicago in our overall defensive rankings, finishing seventh in the league against the pass and fourth against the run. Washington’s special teams were 14th in the league, despite an exceptional year from punter Derrick Frost and his coverage team, the second best unit in the NFL according to our rankings.

Who’s Leaving?

When it comes to salary cap management, the Redskins are the polar opposite of their division rivals in Philadelphia. While the Eagles enter each off-season with more salary cap space than they know what to do with, Washington stumbles in millions over the cap, having to cut veterans or restructure their contracts to make up for the millions of dead money that inevitably finds its way into Washington’s cap figure. Washington is reportedly $20 million over the cap, with two players – linebacker Lavar Arrington and tackle Chris Samuels – with cap values of over $10 million each.

Although the team does not have many potential unrestricted free agents (safety Ryan Clark being the only starter), the team could lose some familiar faces as it tries to cut at least $20 million off of its cap. The Washington Post has a nice article on Washington’s salary cap situation, detailing the myriad of ways the Redskins can get under the salary cap. Some players will need to be cut (center Cory Raymer, safety Matt Bowen, kicker John Hall), others will need to restructure bonuses due them in 2006 (quarterback Mark Brunell, running back Clinton Portis, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin), and Patrick Ramsey will likely be traded, just to give Washington enough room under the cap to make some minor free agent moves.

If Washington wants to make a major free agent acquisition, it’s likely that Arrington will need to restructure his contract. Cutting or trading Arrington is not a realistic option for Washington, as either will cost the Redskins $12 million in dead money. The team did spend over $9 million in cap space last year so that Laveranues Coles could play for the Jets, so that option shouldn’t be ruled out.

Who Should They Sign?

Washington’s biggest need on offense is a wide receiver to take some attention away from Santana Moss. While Moss gained 1483 yards in 2005, the rest of the wide receivers on Washington’s roster combined for only 529 yards. Indianapolis Colts receiver Reggie Wayne is the biggest potential free agent on the market, but Washington will need to get extra creative with its restructuring to get far enough under the cap to afford him. The aforementioned Jurevicius and Randle El are more likely targets.

Another receiver name to keep in mind is New England Patriots receiver David Givens. Last year, the Redskins tried to bring some New England magic to Virginia by signing David Patten to serve as their second receiver. Patten was a huge disappointment, gaining only 217 yards in the air on a paltry 9.9 yards per catch. Givens, however, is a better bet than Patten was last year. Givens is six years younger than Patten and has much better hands. Since 1998, Patten has caught only 48% of the balls thrown in his direction; Givens who has managed to haul in 58% of passes thrown to him in his four-year career.

The Redskins will also need to acquire some depth on their offensive line through free agency. With Raymer a likely cap casualty, and guard Ray Brown’s retirement after a 20-year career, Washington will be left with no backup with any NFL experience for guards Randy Thomas and Derrick Dockery and center Casey Rabach. Veteran lineman Bob Hallen, who has started 47 games in his eight-year career with the Falcons and Chargers at both center and guard, could be a good fit in Washington. The former second round pick was unable to hold onto a starting job in either Atlanta or San Diego, but his versatility — and likely cheap price tag — is exactly what Washington needs to beef up its offensive line.

Shows excellent awareness has a good feel for blocking schemes and almost always gets into good position. Plays with sound overall technique, rarely makes mistakes and does all of the little things right. Plays with good leverage, comes off the ball hard and can get some pop at the point of attack. However, Hallen lacks ideal size, he isn't a great athlete and he can't afford to make any mistakes. Lacks the bulk to engulf undersized defenders and doesn't show the ability to wear defenders down over the course of the game. Lacks ideal change of direction skills, struggles to redirect, doesn't show the ability to adjust to the moving target and must take the proper angle to be an effective downfield blocker.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Is smart and makes all the line calls up front. Takes excellent angles to the second level in the running game. Has a good feel for stunts, twists and delayed blitzes. Is a physical, aggressive run blocker.

Weaknesses: Struggles in space. Gets out-leveraged too often on the line. Isn't real explosive. Is sometimes too quick to come off combo run blocks and allow penetration. Has trouble protecting edges.

Comment:

He can adjust his track quickly to defensive shifts and movement. He is aware in pass pro - good feel for stunts, twists and delayed blitzes. He has solid strength in both his upper and lower body. He is a physical and aggressive run blocker. He shows the ability to get movement with a big DT on his nose. He does a solid job of running his feet and working to finish after initial contact. Works to keep good position in pass pro. He shows solid anchor ability - can hold his ground vs. a power rusher. While he does have solid strength, he is not very explosive. He is slow with his re-direct. Can be too quick to come off combo run blocks and allow penetration. He will fall off his reach and lateral blocks. Has trouble protecting his edges in the run and pass games.

2004 - Tennessee:

Justin Hartwig is a technically sound offensive lineman which tends to lean towards physical play. Displaying the ability to maintain and finish blocks well, Hartwig positions himself well and can block the second level of defense. While not being overly athletically gifted, Hartwig uses physical power to his advantage in run blocking. A better run blocker than pass blocker at this time, he should improve with further experience. Handles bigger defensive tackles well, but does have some problems with quicker defensive tackle types on occasion.

Strengths: Is physical, tenacious and efficient. Takes good angles, plays with a wide base and uses his hands well. Runs well for his size. Gets good knee bend and rarely gives ground to bull rushers. Reads defenses well, makes accurate line calls and is a leader on the field. Is durable.

Comment:

Runs fairly well for size, is big enough to engulf undersized defenders and does an adequate job of getting outside on screens. Shows good awareness on pass protection, picks up the blitz fairly well and does a good job of helping his guards when nothing comes to him. However, McCollum is a far better football player than he is an athlete and he is on the downside of his career. Lacks the lateral mobility to adjust to the moving target in pace, doesn't have great initial quickness and has some problems getting into position at the second level. Has lost a step with age and isn't as effective pulling and trapping as was earlier in career.

2004 - Miami:

Seth McKinney has yet to display the potential the Dolphins expect when drafting him. Despite showing good awareness, McKinney is often overpowered at the point of attack and lacks overall consistency in pass protection, as well as a run blocker. He gets into position quickly, but does not finish blocks and often comes out of his stance too high which leads to being pushed backward. Comment:

He has actually developed into a little more of a power and physical type player than he was on the college level, and he has pretty good straight ahead explosiveness and leverage. He is not a dominating run blocker, but has some short area lock on skills, and the ability and feet to wall off and get pretty good position. His angles will improve with experience, and so will his ability to get to linebackers on the second level. ] He doesn't have great speed although his quickness is adequate, and he is not going to give you a lot of quality snaps on an island or in space, but he is a try hard guy who will hold his own, and he will simply get better with experience, and he is kind of an interesting young player to watch.

Strengths: Has good explosiveness coming off the ball and delivers a blow. Has very good quickness; can slide and stay centered in front of the quarterback. Has a strong upper body and uses his hands well to lock on. Plays with intelligence. Helps out on line stunts and twists in the middle.

Weaknesses: Can get movement but struggles vs. big linemen. Can get in front of screens and tosses but is inconsistent in getting to moving targets in space. Does not always play with good base and will often lose leverage and lunge.

Bottom line: Metcalf does not have ideal size for the interior line but makes up for it with a fiery attitude. He must improve his strength and be more consistent with his technique.

Comment:

He has good upper body strength and he uses his hands well to lock on a defender. He plays with good intelligence. He picks up and helps out on line stunts and twists in the middle. He is best when he does not have a big strong defender on his nose. He can get movement but struggles against the bigger linemen. He shows the speed to get out in front of screens and tosses but is somewhat inconsistent in getting to a moving target in space. He does not block movement in the line with consistency. He does not always play with a good base and will often lose his leverage and lunge at a block and lose his balance.

Comment:

He's not a massive ROT but he does have above average overall size. He has good all-around strength. He has learned to play with better leverage. Is strong at the POA. Shows good initial pop and the ability to knock defenders back with his jarring hand-punch. He has long arms and a wide wingspan. Is able to engulf defenders at the POA. He takes very good He has decent quickness in short-area pass pro but he does not show great lateral movement skills and he will get in trouble vs. top speed rushers and athletes at the LDE position. Also, as much as he has improved from a technique standpoint, he still has some mental lapses and makes some key mistakes that need to be resolved.

Strengths: Delivers powerful initial punch and plays with a mean streak. Can push the pile and finish blocks. Takes good angles and adjusts to moving targets. Has the range to pull and trap. Shows good footwork, balance and awareness in pass protection.

Plays with a mean streak, has the lower body strength to push the pile in short-yardage situations and flashes the ability to finish blocks. Takes good angles to blocks, has the lateral mobility to adjust to the moving target in space and can get into the position at the second level. However, Tucker is a better run blocker than he is a pass blocker and he has had problems staying healthy. Takes too long to get into pass set and has problems preventing penetration working against explosive one-gap defenders. Lacks an explosive first step and has problems beating one-gap defenders to the point of attack.

Strengths: Is intelligent, has excellent first-step quickness and plays with good balance. Can redirect on run and pass plays and adjust on the move. Uses his hands well in pass protection, gets good separation and can handle second moves. Is a good wall-off run blocker.

Weaknesses: Lacks power and strength. Can be bull rushed by two-gap defensive ends. Doesn’t anchor well and never will dominate at the point of attack. Had back problems last year.

His best quality are probably his feet, and he has excellent first step quickness off the ball, he shows the ability to redirect in run and pass situations, and he always plays with good overall balance. He uses his hands well in pass protection situations, he gets good separation, and he has the ability to handle a defensive pass rusher's second move, and he can match defenders with quickness. Big physical two gap LDE's can give him problems when they bull rush and he is never going to be a strong anchor at the point of attack, nor is he going to dominate at the line of scrimmage.

Good lateral foot quickness. Good vision and awareness for stunts. He does have long arms and can ride the DE around the edge. Can get out of his stance and move well to the 2nd level. Does a solid job of getting the backside cut-off block. Shows the ability to move well forward to the 2nd level but not real smooth at times and can looking awkward in his movements. Average punch - doesn't have heavy hands and would like to see him be more active with his hands. He is not a power player. Can have trouble vs. a good bull rush. Offensive tackle

Runyan, the best member of this group, will command top dollar from Philadelphia or one of a multitude of other interested teams. He is big and tough and has been a productive starter for years. He isn't very light on his feet, but Runyan can maul an opponent and brings an attitude to an offense.

Jeff Backus (Lions) lacks ideal agility on the left side, but he can help an offensive line at either tackle spot and perhaps at guard. He lacks the bulk most teams look for in a tackle, but he is reliable, smart and tough. He has a good understanding of blocking angles.

L.J. Shelton found a home in Cleveland last season. He tailed off toward the end of the season, but the Browns -- who lack depth on the offensive line -- could bring him back, at the right price. Shelton has been a starter in each of his seven NFL seasons and, though not a superstar, is a capable left tackle.

Kevin Shaffer was a restricted free agent with seventh-round compensation last offseason before Atlanta upgraded his tender. He didn't play as well in 2006 as he did in '05, but he is talented and athletic and can get stronger.

After the aforementioned OTs, there is a pretty good drop-off in talent.

Tom Ashworth, Mike Pearson and Stockar McDougle have good experience. Although none is an ideal starter, each should draw some interest at a position that lacks depth in free agency.

Ashworth has started games at both tackle spots and can get the job done as a regular if surrounded by good players.

Pearson spent most of 2005 on injured reserve (knee) and was a player Jacksonville had considered replacing even before he went down. He is an above-average athlete but isn't very tough or physical in the run game.

McDougle used his power and bulk to turn in a decent '04 season with Detroit, but he struggled to find a niche in Miami last year. His weaknesses: inconsistency and mental mistakes. McDougle is a bit of an enigma, a guy who plays very well one week and appears below average the next.

John St. Clair and Kevin Barry also are coming off seasons that didn't live up to their '04 performances. Both should get looks from a few teams that can use a player who will be a solid sixth or seventh lineman if he can't win a starting spot.

Veterans Anthony Clement and Victor Riley performed well under expectations in San Francisco and Houston, but could get some looks because of the lack of available talent at this position.

The best of the restricted-free-agent market are Tony Pashos (Baltimore), Wayne Hunter (Seattle) and Jordan Black (Kansas City). Pashos and Black saw extensive playing time this season and occasionally struggled, but both are young and have upside. Hunter has earned little playing time in his first two seasons, but he was highly regarded coming out of college.

A few available tackles can help teams with a need, but overall this is a run-of-the-mill group. Because there always seems to be a shortage of serviceable offensive linemen -- tackles in particular -- the majority of these players will wind up on NFL rosters at some point. Offensive tackles come at a premium, so chances always are good that a team or two will overpay at the position.

Guard

Pro Bowl selection Steve Hutchinson, far and away the top free-agent guard, is among the elite players at any position who could hit the open market this offseason. Although playing beside tackle Walter Jones helps a great deal, Hutchinson is a nasty finisher who moves well and is equally adept in the running and passing games. He has only five years under his belt, making him a premium free agent the Seahawks would love to keep, but he won't come cheap. Still, teams tend to avoid overpaying guards on the free-agent market, so Hutchinson might find that his value isn't quite what he might have hoped.

Tutan Reyes, Stephen Neal, Terrence Metcalf, Toniu Fonoti and Grey Ruegamer have starting experience, and each will attract attention on the open market. But all are second-tier players who won't command high-dollar contracts. For them, the goal should be finding the right system to suit their respective skills.

Reyes is a big-bodied interior lineman who has postseason experience and has been part of a successful, physical run game in Carolina. He is a better run-blocker than pass protector, but he would help a power-run team in need of a veteran guard.

Neal, who has been in the league only three years, has upside. Having played for New England and in plenty of playoff games will add to his attractiveness. His smarts, toughness and competitiveness make up for below-average athletic ability.

Metcalf has battled injuries while fighting for playing time in Chicago, but he has some power at the point of attack and is capable of filling a starting role on a team that is weak at the position.

Fonoti is a powerful talent who can be a road grader at the point of attack when he wants to be, but he has been a career underachiever. He was traded by San Diego to Minnesota midseason and quickly landed on injured reserve, so teams will need to analyze his health status closely.

Ruegamer is intriguing because of his ability to play guard and center. The lack of depth at guard could persuade some team to consider him as a starter, but he is far better suited for backup duty.

Guard is one of the few positions where the restricted free agents are much more appealing collectively than the unrestricted group.

Vince Manuwai is coming off a down year, but he still has ample upside and the tools to be an above-average starter. He has performed at a high level in the past.

David Diehl, who has experience at guard and tackle, is tough and smart and plays hard. He isn't a great athlete, though, and is far better off playing inside than on the edge.

Reggie Wells, Sean Mahan and Montrae Holland have experience as starters but are unlikely to get an upgraded tender. That makes them good candidates to move to new teams. Each has excellent upside and should continue to improve.

Hutchinson is the only superstar, but this is a deep group. Teams that have solid tackles generally don't need premier guards, so there shouldn't be a lot of big-money offers at the position. Still, expect plenty of movement.

Center

LeCharles Bentley, the best available center, should be a hot commodity. With all the troubles in New Orleans, Bentley might happily accept a fresh start on a winning franchise. Bentley plays low and is strong, tough and nasty. He ranks among the league's better players at the position.

Roberto Garza can play center and guard, and it is that versatility and his athleticism that should draw significant interest from several teams. He spot-started and played effectively for Chicago last season.

Mike Flanagan and Jeff Mitchell are veteran linemen who have been quality performers over their careers but are coming off seasons that weren't among their best. Teams will have doubts about the long-term viability of both, so short-term contracts at the buyer's price are likely -- and could bear big rewards. Mitchell anchors a very solid Carolina line and, as the younger of the two linemen, is the more attractive commodity.

Justin Hartwig, a starter in Tennessee, is intelligent and works hard. But he isn't especially powerful, explosive or athletic in space.

Trey Teague has extensive starting experience, but he doesn't play with a great base and is too light to battle NFL nose tackles.

Seth McKinney and Melvin Fowler are younger options who still are developing. Each could be attractive to teams that are searching for a youngster who is potentially on the rise to come in and challenge a veteran at the position.

On the whole, this is an above-average group of free-agent centers. Expect a good bit of movement at the position this offseason.

2004 - Cleveland:

Melvin Fowler is an underappreciated and miscast player early in his career. Fowler plays well in a short area when he can put his hands on a defensive tackle. Will battle and finish off blocks, but does not play overly well in space. Not overly quick or strong, Fowler is a fundamentally sound center, but lacks the agility to get to the second line of defense consistently.

He can pull and trap. Will reach the second level on time and can hit the moving target. However, Withrow is vastly undersized and has marginal strength. He is too much of a finesse blocker. Projected as: C

Position Rank: 8

Date of Birth: 4/5/1975

Experience: 6

College: Washington State

Biography:

2005 - Minnesota:

Cory Withrow has been a developing project for the Vikings. They have continually called him back and allowed him to make the slow ascension up the ranks.

They signed him again during the 2004 offseason as an unrestricted free agent. He will be Pro Bowl center Matt Birk’s primary backup again and could fill in as an emergency long snapper.

2004: Made five starts in place of Matt Birk, who battled a sports hernia for much of the season. Played in another seven games, mostly on special teams, and was inactive for four games. Has started six games in his career, playing in a total of 64.

2003: Was inactive for one game and did not play in seven more. He saw action on offense in one game and returned a squid kick eight yards against Atlanta on Oct. 5.

2002: Saw action in all 16 games, mostly on special teams. Backed up at both guard positions and center. Was used sparingly as a blocking fullback.

2001: Became the primary backup for center Matt Birk. Played in all 16 games, starting one at right guard.

2000: Signed for a third time with the Vikings on March 14. With the parting of Jeff Christy and Randall McDaniel, Withrow was able to find a full-time spot on the Vikings’ 53-man roster. Played in 12 regular-season and two playoff games, mostly on special teams with limited action at center.

1999: Signed again with the Vikings on April 30. This time he made the Vikings’ practice squad after training camp – for a couple months at least. Promoted to the active roster on Oct. 26. However, that promotion put him in even more danger if the Vikings wanted to add others to their active roster. He was waived on Nov. 30, but re-signed to the practice squad a day later and that is where he ended his roller-coaster ride known as 1999.

1998: Began as a free agent offensive lineman out of Washington. First saw NFL practices with the Vikings, eventually being waived on Aug. 30 after attending minicamp and training camp. The Bengals picked him up and he spent time on their practice squad.

College: Withrow played his college ball protecting quarterback Ryan Leaf. The center started the last 34 games of his career and was honored as second-team All-Pac-10 in 1997.

Position: G

Born: 10/28/77, Queens, NY.

High school: August Martin (Queens, N.Y.).

College: Mississippi.

2005 scouting report

Strengths: Takes good angles to blocks, has adequate quickness and generally is in good position. Plays with a mean streak, is physical at the point of attack and can knock defenders back with his initial punch. Gets adequate hand placement, has the upper-body strength to maintain separation and rarely loses once locked on. Has adequate agility, can adjust to moving targets at the second level and can redirect inside after starting outside. Also can play center.

Weaknesses: Isn’t dominant in any area and needs work as a pass blocker. Is Small, lacks lower-body strength and often loses his balance. Durability is a question.

Bottom line: Reyes has the tenacity and upper-body strength to step in for a short period of time, but he isn’t an every-down player.

Comment:

Flashes the ability to be explosive. Could be a better 1x1 blocker if he played with better body control. Gets tossed off to easily at times. He is a limited athlete - looks sluggish and heavy footed playing in space. Can be slow to re-direct. Can be slow to get off initial blocks on combos. Will fight the defender in pass pro, but not consistent to protect his edges. Can get his feet caught behind him. Has heavy hands, but needs to be more consistent with his punch. He is still a raw player and his techniques are not getting better. He is a short area OG with solid power and strength.

Comment:

He plays with bend knees most of the time and when he loses his leverage he has a tough time maintaining contact. He fits himself in well in the pass protection schemes and he shows good ability to pass off and pick up stunts in pass protection. He is not what you would call an elite athlete and struggles with the phases of the game that demand above average agility. He does not explode out of his stance but is more of a position blocker. He tends to get high and not get the movement you would like in the run game. He is very inconsistent blocking movement in the line of scrimmage and he has a difficult time in space. He is effective in a constricted area but tends to drop off in performance if asked to move too much.

Comment:

Gets adequate hand placement, has the upper body strength to maintain separation from defenders and forces edge rushers to take a wider path to the quarterback. However, Shaffer isn't dominant in any area. Lacks ideal bulk, isn't big enough to engulf defenders at the point of attack and isn't big enough to wear defenders down over the course of the game. Lacks ideal initial quickness, takes too long to get set and upper echelon edge rushers will have some success turning the corner working against him. Doesn't show great lateral mobility, has problems redirecting inside after starting outside and is vulnerable to double moves.

Comment:

Shelton is a massive, wide body hog type OL and he never fit as an OT because of lack of quickness on the perimeter, and for some strange reason he did not flourish inside, where his skills would seem to be more suited. He does have excellent overall strength and when he can engulf defenders he can be very effective. He has an excellent initial punch and he uses his long arms and hands well. He can certainly handle the bull rush and he is at his best in a short area power game. He lacks speed and range and he is vulnerable if you put him on an island. Not only does he struggle with quickness off the edge, but he's at his worst vs. double moves and because he lacks balance, he tends to overextend and he cannot redirect or recover.

Comment:

Stokes rarely takes false steps, has adequate initial quickness and generally gets into good position. Plays with good leverage, drives through blocks and has the lower body strength to push the pile in the running game. Plays with a mean streak, delivers a powerful initial punch and flashes the ability to knock defenders back. Possesses adequate size, gets good knee bend in pass set and can hold ground working against bull rushers. Keeps head up, shows good awareness and flashes the ability to pick up the blitz. Can line up at any position along the offensive line and is versatile. However, Stokes is a better football player than he is an athlete and the 31-year-old is coming off a season-ending back injury. Lacks ideal lateral mobility, has problems redirecting inside after starting outside and is vulnerable to doubles moves and line stunts. Takes too long to get into pass set and has problems preventing penetration. Doesn't always plays under control in space, lacks the quick feet to adjust to the moving target at the second level and isn't a great downfield blocker.
