Music that defines "The Eighties" for you?

Recommended Posts

I started this post for the person who was requesting top 20 80s songs for an 80s playlist but quickly realized that my taste in 80's music is not the same as some others...A little stroll through iTunes is all I need to laugh at myself.... So I thought to start a new thread with what do you hear that screams "Thats sooo eighties." I've been hearing some newer music lately that sounds heavily influenced by some of the music I listened to from the 80's but so much of the touted "80's music" only consists of pop music like Madonna and friggin Boy George... Obviously everyone's go different musical tastes but ....What songs define the infamous "Eighties" for you?

Some of the songs that pretty much define "The Eighties" for me follow.. Most wont make many people's top 20 lists but what the hell... They aren't necessarily "favorite" songs from the 80's rather they just seem to scream EIGHTIES to me. If anything this might serve as an acid-like flashback to some :)

The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em) - Greg Kihn Band

"Hold on Loosely"

"Josie's on a vacation far away ..."

Got awfully tired of those two, but they scream 80s to me.

Van Halen and AC/DC in the early 80s.

I listened to Scorpions and a few "hair bands" (Dokken, Whitesnake) in the mid 80s.

By the late 80s I had gotten into Zeppelin and Marillion.

In my opinion, 80s mainstream music mostly stunk. However, the underground music from the 80s was quite good.

A lot of that good music came from the Los Angeles/Orange County punk scene, which started in the late 70s and was still going strong into the early 80s.

My list of best 80s songs include:

"London Calling"--The Clash;

"We're Desperate"--X;

"We're Only Going to Die (of Our Own Arrogance)"--Bad Religion;

"History Lesson"--Minutemen;

"Girl U Want"--Devo;

"Gimme Gimme Gimme"--Black Flag;

"Wild in the Streets"--Circle Jerks;

"Abolish Government/Silent Majority"--TSOL;

"Bloodstains"--Agent Orange;

"Mommy's Little Monster"--Social Distortion;

"I Like Food"--Descendents;

"Destination Unknown"--Missing Persons;

"I Didn't Cry"--Pandoras;

"Amoeba"--Adolescents;

"California Uber Alles"--Dead Kennedys;

"Sink in California"--Youth Brigade;

"Out of School"--JFA;

"Blister in the Sun"--Violent Femmes;

"American Society"--Eddie and the Subtitles;

I've been waiting all my life for this thread! :)

The pop-like R&B of the 80s is my absolute favorite music even though my husband says that it is probably the worst era of music in history.

Anway, I ride to work with songs like:

Mercedes Boy - Pebbles

Come Go with Me - Expose

Let Me Be the One - Expose

Crush on You - The Jets

Rocket 2 U - The Jets

You Got it All - The Jets

Looking for a New Love - Jody Watley

Still a Thrill - Jody Watley

Some Kind of Lover - Jody Watley

Let Me Be the One - 5 Star

Symptoms of True Love - Tracie Spencer

Lovergirl - Teena Marie

Out on a Limb - Teena Marie

777-9311 - The Time

Cool - The Time

I could go on but I'll spare everybody.

...and please don't get me started on New Edition!
