Divisional Roundups

Slams Williams' defensive game plan.

During the game, Daryl Johnston wondered aloud several times why Washington wasn't blitzing more. The answer is because they were getting killed on blitzes.

Thinks Brunell is too old.

..if Gibbs wants to be successful next season, he needs to plan his offense around a quarterback other than Brunell.

Questions the O-line.

Part of Washington's problem was the offensive line, and in particular the right guard position.

Questions the blocking schemes.

Washington tried to block Grant Wistrom with wide receiver Antonio Brown, who is listed at 172 pounds

As I haven't seen the game, what are peoples thoughts on this article?

yep, Mark Brunell's injury in Game 15 vs. the Giants and Portis' cumulative wear from all those carries down the stretch didn't have any effect on the outcome of this game

I have been watching this team since 1971-72 and I know a tired football team when I see it.

The Redskins made the mistake of falling too deeply into the hole. Getting back to competitive position expended guys like Brunell and Portis and left the team at less than 100% entering the postseason.

The club won its first playoff game on defense where the skill position players were healthier.

When the Redskins won in 1991 the team only suffered one major injury during the regular season and that was Ed Simmons going down at right tackle, to be replaced by Joe Jacoby.

The team was able to clinch a playoff berth early and rest its players in the season finale against the Eagles before hosting a divisional round game.

That rest and recuperation was huge after playing 16 games. So was having the homefield advantage.

Those are the things to play for in 2006 :)

plus 3 OL-men need surgery, 5 out of 7 straight playoff type games on the road, week 3 bye...... fatigue played a huge part in this game

Did Winstrom even make a tackle?

Duh, our starting all pro caliber RG, has a broke leg, our backup got injured... 3rd string lineman out of position rarely excel in playoff games

And Seattle didn't beat the blitzes because Holmgren so outcoached GW. The 'hawks All-Pro/Pro-Bowl QB, who along with his team, doesn't get due props here IMO (schedule notwithstanding) had a very hot day. He made a lot of great individual efforts and beat the blitzes every time we almost had him. Just the way you'd expect a top QB on his homeifield in his team's first play-off game in 20 years.
