Bob Jones University...tell me this is a joke

Dating and Mixed Groups

We want students to have wholesome social opportunities in a setting that provides accountability for biblical requirements of purity. It is with this in mind that we chaperon campus activities where men and women students are present and require a chaperon when students date or interact in a mixed group off campus.

oh my god.

Most of it was no real surprise, considering the source. But

Music must be compatible with the University's music standards:

New Age, jazz, rock, and country music is not permitted.

Contemporary Christian music is not permitted

Jazz is below their standards? Contemporary Christian music is contraband?

Heres the killer...

All weapons must be turned in for storage. Trigger locks are required for pistols. Fireworks are not permitted on campus.

They allow guns but no movies above a G rating lol

Well, they got one thing right, at least. :applause:

I guess they don't have the explicit racial restrictions out front anymore.

Yeah, I noticed that they dropped that, too.

As for BJU, if you don't like that setting, my guess is you don't go there. Many Christian schools DO have some expectation or vow you have to take before enrolling after acceptance.

BJU goes too far, but then, the society has changed quite a bit too. They may feel more extreme measures are necessary to even have a modicum of defense against 'deterioration.'

That doesn't mean I agree, but there's a difference between dogmatic or draconian approaches to social and moral issues and being evil. Comparing them to the Taliban is silly because BJU is a private organization and they can ask what they will of their members (within certain legal limits.) The Taliban ruled most of Afghanistan and no one could voluntarily withdraw from their impositions and brutality, just as is the case with the Committee on Vice and Morality or whatever that is in Saudi Arabia.

Do you ___ at AA for forbidding ANY consumption of alcohol during their meetings? Of course not. For THEM, some of these issues are akin to that.

And I'm not Christian but AnF has shown a remarkable tendency towards thongs for 5 year olds and sexualizing young girls, in general. I'm no fan of theirs either (beyond the obvious style clash.)

So, point and laugh and I certainly want no part of it, but please let's stop short of calling people Taliban when they wouldn't exist if not for voluntary participation.

When Orthodox Jewish or Muslim places of prayer separate men from women and force the women to cover their hair, I expect to see the same ridicule. ;)

And since you must be aware that music is forbidden in Islam (depending how you interpret the text) then I also expect some posts about that. :2cents:

I was looking for that too and didn't find it. But I looked at the pictures, did not see a single non-white face. I got my hopes up momentarily when they made reference to "mixed groups", thought maybe they actually were tolerant of racial mixing. Silly me, they meant men and women mixing, not different races.

What an evil, backward place. These are the same people that condemned the Taliban for enforcing this kinds of restrictions.

It is a Christian college. That doesn't make it evil because you want the people attending to follow principals found in the Bible. Your comments are ridiculous and insane. It shows your intolerance for people who believe in something different then yourself.

If you don't follow the same beliefs as they do then don't go to school there. Pretty Simple huh?

Fair enough. I did overreact a little bit. I'll admit that.

Evil was too strong of a word, but the place is pretty backward. I know plenty of good, Bible-abiding Christians who would react just as strongly.

Define backwards?

I don't think they are backwards. They just follow a very strict form of Christianity. Do I personally believe in everything they talk about on that web site? Nope. However, I do see what they are trying to do which is trying to protect their students.

It's backward because it encourages sexual and personal repression. I'm not saying they're not allowed to encourage that; I'm just saying that doing so is backward.

Nah, its pretty crazy...I know plenty of really conservative Christians and am fairly religious and conservative myself and what I read is seriously disturbing. I can't think of anyone I know that would tolerate such insane rules as the ones that they use.

If they people want to act like a bunch of wierdos and stay there and follow the rules... that's fine, but there is no reason not to talk about it like it is.

And IT, my friends, is crazy.

LOL

I think the key point is that it's a voluntary institution. I probably wouldn't send my kids there, but for some I guess it's what they want. I would think a key distinction from the Taliban is that there is no mention of public beatings and/or beheadings if you violate the rules, but maybe I didn't read the fine print. Besides, there are still Amish and Mennonites in this country, if you want to really demonstrate your ability to ridicule others.

Yeah, but everyone knows the about the Amish and the Mennonites. The only thing crazy that I had ever heard about Bob Jones before, was their policy about bi-racial dating.

I had no idea just how messed up they were. I think most people don't, and maybe they should.

I don't know. What's more messed up? No mixing between male and female students, or "Vagina Day" celebrations on college campuses, complete with giant walking vagina mascots, classes on hardcore porn, S&M etc.? I guess it depends on your point of view.

If you think this is somehow outside the norm of conservative Christianity you don't know any "really conservative Christians" and you are not as conservative as you think.

Also, please don't mask your hateful remarks behind the "I know plenty of really conservative christians." It's the samething as someone saying "I have plenty of black friends" then going on to make racist remarks.
