Although it hasn’t been officially announced yet or appeared in the media, my source has informed me that the Redskins have just signed kicker Tyler Jones to a futures contract for the 2006 season. Eat your heart out Andyman.

Now I have to find some more articles on Ogunleye for Park City Skins and Spanishomelette.

What the hell are "futures contracts?" You've posted several of these, yet I've never even heard of them before. WTF?? Is it like signing him to a contract now but the cap hit doesn't come until next season or something?? WTF??

After the first of the year, teams have started signing street free agents (players not on other teams rosters) to contracts for the 2006 season. If they are signed to a futures contract they can't play in the playoffs, but they do count against the 2006 salary cap. However, their contracts usually fall in the 230K, 310k, and 385k range, so they usually dont count because of the Rule of 51 when that takes effect. :D

I understand a future contract to be something that the club and player have agreed to once the season ends. The club has indicated that the player will be signed for the off-season/training camps, but no guarantee of a long term contract.

Just lets the player know that he will be a member of the off season roster.

Futures contracts are generally for 2 and 3 years. All 8 practice squad players are signed only to 1 year contracts. As soon as the Redskin season is over, all 8 presumably will be re-signed for the 2006 season, and those "futures contracts will be for 2 or 3 years depending on whether the player is a 1st year player or rookie.
