Short Kickoffs

Since coming back from injury, it looks like John Hall doesn't have enough strength to kick effectively on kickoffs. It was very apparent in this past game with Philadelphia. It seemed like they were starting past the 30 yard line on the majority of their drives. In Gibbs' first tenure, he had a kickoff specialist for at least one season. What do you think the chances of us picking up someone with a strong leg just for kickoffs are? The cost is a roster spot, but I think it would be worth it.

I agree that the KOs are short and that opposing teams routinely start with very good field position (30-35 yard line). However, I don't think taking away a position from Offense or Defense is worth it to add a KO specialist. The kicker just has to get the job done. If he can't then they need to bring in more kickers in the offseason. Hall has a fairly high contract for a kicker so he needs to produce not just in field goals but also KOs.

I hate to make excuses, but I don't think Hall has recovered sufficiently from that quad injury. But, you're right. It is a HUGE concern, going into the playoffs. You don't want to do that consistently against teams like Tampa, Seattle and Chicago.

I actually think the Kick-offs are designed that way. I remember during a press conference when Novak was kicking, one of the reporters asked Gibbs about the short kickoffs & Gibbs indicated that those Kick-offs were designed to be short. Seems weird, I know, but could be that the coaches feel that by kicking off high and short & we may be giving up better starting position to opposing teams, but we virtually eliminate the long return for a TD.

Totally agree with post.

Anyone who has played soccer or kicked a football will tell you he is not giving himself enough of a running start and he is definently not following through on his kicks. We can't have opposing return men fielding catches at their own twenty, that is going to really kill us in the playoffs. All a team has to do is get lucky on a ten, twenty yard play and they've won the field position battle.

Moving away from perceptions and into the realm of facts, here are Hall's kickoffs for the season...

How many touchbacks have our kickers gotten- thats what we really want! I wonder if they might have Frost give it a try... remember back in the days when Steve Cox (my favorite skins punter of all time) would kickoff and try the really long FG's (55 yds+)

Given those poor kickoffs, I think that a roster spot for a kickoff specialist would be a good move. Allowing a team to start with good field position on kickoffs gives them a boost, can drain our team, and allows their drives to end in field goals rather than punts. If Hall cannot kick it long on kickoffs, it could cost us.

honestly i havent put much thought into his kick placements but as i am located outside of the general game viewing area i dont get to see much action. but i will say that i have been disappointed by his injury proneness. i mean. i know it is football, but as a kicker i dont see how seems to be hurt so much. im not sure how he got the quad injury, i can only assume he got ran into. otherwise it seems maybe some serious stretching throughout the game might be in order. personally though i really dont see how a kicker could possibly be injured so often

yah, from what i remember that dude used to kick the **** out of the ball in past seasons on kickoffs...iunno what happened.

plus on that one he kicked out of bounds last game (:puke: ) he looked flat out ackward trying to kick that ball. i remember they had a close up of him kicking it, his body looked all distorted and whatnot...then they switch cameras to the ball rolling out at the 15 or whatever the ****. haha i remember yelling my ass off after that play  .

im no expert on kick mechanics or anything, just adding my casual observations.

whatever tho, its prolly the injury, and hes been nailing the 3's for the most part and thas all that matters.

i agree 'rtbasye': give frost a shot?

I didn't breeze through the first half of the post. But three dreadful games outweighs the rest of the average kickoffs during the other games. I expect our kicker to perform at least adequately throughout the season. It wouldn't be so bad if once per game he had a short kickoff, but in the three games that you posted, he was consistently short. If he has one of those games against Tampa Bay or any other playoff team, it could hurt us.

Last week the skins could barely giet it out to the 25 on returns as the ball was kicked deep and we kick it short and they still get the smae distance in returns and get it out to the 35. If he is to kick it short I think it is suppiose to be High also!
