Second night of riots hits Sydney

Violence triggered by race tensions has hit Sydney for a second night, with youths damaging cars and shops.

A reporter in the suburb of Cronulla, where dozens were arrested after riots on Sunday, described scenes of "chaos".

Police said carloads of people had come into the area from other parts of Sydney and committed violent acts.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard condemned the weekend's attacks by thousands of young white men on people of Arabic and Mediterranean background.

"We have shops damaged at Caringbah, cars damaged at Cronulla," said a spokesman for New South Wales police. "We have six arrests at this stage."

A reporter from the ABC national radio network said some of the people coming into Cronulla had carried out attacks on property.

'Bricks thrown'

At the nearby suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands, "a smaller crowd has thrown bricks and other objects at police cars and passing motorists", the reporter said.

Earlier in the evening police had confiscated iron bars from parks and the roofs of buildings at nearby Maroubra. Police believed they had been stored there by residents.

The ABC also reported police were monitoring cars travelling through the suburb of Rockdale, and large groups of people gathering in Punchbowl and Peakhurst.

Thousands of young white men attacked people of Arabic and Mediterranean background on Cronulla Beach on Sunday.

The fighting injured more than 30 people, including police officers, and at least 16 people were arrested.

The clashes follow an assault on two lifeguards last week, reportedly by youths of Middle Eastern origin.

Look around the world fellas. Everywhere muslims are migrating to or spreading islam there is trouble.

Y'know, I absolutely guarantee you that the same thing was said when the first blacks tried to buy a house, in hundreds of, shall we say, inapropriate, neighborhoods.

-----

And how far do you think I'd have to dig to find a post by you, after a minority race riot, that says that it doesn't matter what those poor, underprivleged minorities think they've got a grievance about, that rioting is terrorism, and they should be shot, because nothing justifies that kind of behavior?

Just curious.

Careful, you are insinuating that his comments are ignorant and bigoted. Which they clearly are...

The way I understand what is happening is that the Middle Eastern appearing gang members overstepped the mark and bashed a couple of lifeguards a few weekends back.

The locals decided that enough was enough, and took the law into their own hands and targeted any person of Middle Eastern appearance. OK, some got wrongly identified, but at least the locals made their intentions known in full view of the public, with total media coverage.

Later on Sunday, upwards of 50 car loads of 'victims' drove up from the southern suburbs and took revenge by trashing every car parked in a local street, bashing anyone who dared venture outside to see what was going on.

Those targeted often, and regularly, do the same thing, but as sneak attacks, and target small groups were they have the upperhand. Some of these gangs are also responsible for pack rapes on schoolgirls, then when they get caught, get the 'brothers' to threaten the families if they don't drop the complant.

I'm not totally condoning what happened, but it was a long time in coming.

The way the story was told on NPR this morning, a Lebanese gang brutally beat a couple of life guards. There was a big rally the next weekend as a show of solidarity against ethinc gang violence, that began with a carnival-like atmosphere, with food being grilled, etc. As the day ran on, and the beer continued to flow, a group of whites from the rally started targeting and beating anyone who looked "Middle Eastern." The retaliation then came as caravans of Lebanese organized and moved into the white neighborhoods near the beaches in the south destroying cars and shop fronts and brutally beating anyone then came upon.

According to the NPR report, the beatings are particularly bad with baseball bats being used, etc. It seems there's been a lot of tension building between the whites in the southern suburbs and the Lebanese gangs, with the gangs involved in some pretty outrageous activities (see SkinnedAussie's post above).

Sounds a lot like an event from our own history.

Los Angeles Zoot Suit Riots

By the beginning of 1943, America was deeply engaged with World War II. In Los Angeles, the city had already been emptied of its residents of Japanese ancestry. Young Latinos, unlike their elders, were not content to stay within their barrios, but were spilling into downtown dance halls, movie houses, pool halls and clubs. As young men are prone to do, many young Latino males distinguished themselves with distinctive hairdos ("duck tails") and apparel ("drape shapes" or "zoot suits" - wide-brimmed hats, broad-shouldered long coats, high-waisted peg-legged trousers and long dangling chains). They called themselves pachucos. They came into contact with swarms of other young men who wore another type of uniform ...military men. The war had caused Los Angeles to swell with military personnel at local bases, many of them from other parts of the country with no prior experience with Latinos and Latino culture. At first, serviceman merely derided the young Latino males attired in "zoot suits." The derision turned to resentment, however, because the young Latino "zoot suiters" were not in military uniform. In fact, many Mexican American men were already in military uniform, disproportionately so for their numbers. Yet this was not what bored, restless young white servicemen saw when rubbing shoulders with strutting, brown-skinned "zoot suiters" in downtown Los Angeles. The local press had been beating a drum of fear that a "Mexican crime wave" had hit the city and "zoot suiters" and "gangsters" were one and the same.

On June 3, 1943, a number of sailors claimed to have been beaten and robbed by Mexican pachucos. The following evening, a mob of about 200 sailors, tired of boredom and fired up with bigotry, hired a fleet of cabs and rolled into East Los Angeles to beat up and strip the clothing off any young Latino male they could find. The authorities seemed to approve. Police made a few initial token arrests of sailors, but they were quickly released. This emboldened the sailors. For several subsequent nights, the swelling mobs of sailors were joined by soldiers and some civilians as they invaded the barrio, marching abreast down streets, invading bars and movie houses, assaulting and humiliating any and all young Latino males, many not attired in "zoot suits." Young Black and Filipino males unfortunate enough to be in the area were also assaulted. Mobs of servicemen in search of "zoot suiters" also prowled the Pike in Long Beach. Although police accompanied the caravans of rioting servicemen, police orders were to let the shore patrol and military police deal with military men. Instead, after several days of rioting and assaults by servicemen, more than 150 had been injured and police had arrested and charged more than 500 Latino youths for "rioting" or "vagrancy," many themselves the victims. The local press lauded the military rioters for confronting the menace of the "Mexican crime wave." "Zoot Suiters Learn Lesson in Fight with Servicemen," declared the Los Angeles Times. The Los Angeles City Council issued an ordinance banning the wearing of "zoot suits." "The zoot suit has become a badge of hoodlumism," explained Councilman Norris Nelson. "We prohibit nudism by an ordinance and if we can arrest people for being under-dressed, we can do so for being over-dressed."

Finally, on June 7, military authorities did what civil authorities would not. Navy and Army commanders sought to get control of their men by ordering that the City of Los Angeles be declared off-limits to military personnel. Nonetheless, the official Navy position was that their sailors were acting in "self-defense against the rowdy element."

Nationwide condemnation of the actions of the military rioters and civil authorities followed. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt commented, "The question goes deeper than just [zoot] suits. It is a racial protest. I have been worried for a long time about the Mexican racial situation. It is a problem with roots going a long way back, and we do not always face these problems as we should." The Los Angeles Times responded with a June 18 headline, "Mrs. Roosevelt Blindly Stirs Race Discord." The editorial page accused her of communist leanings.

Although the County Board of Supervisors launched an investigation and human relations committees were appointed and the police department was instructed to train its officers to treat all citizens equally, the only ones to suffer any real consequence were the Latino victims arrested during the riots. Los Angeles Mayor Fletcher Bowron, reflecting prevailing local opinion, responded to protests by the Mexican Embassy by downplaying the racial character of the incidents and blaming local Mexican youth gangs for inciting the riot.

The latest news as reported today.

Church hall burned down

A FIRE that destroyed church hall in Sydney's west may be linked to the race riots in Cronulla, New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma said today.

Four men were seen near the Uniting Church hall, which is next to an Islamic centre, in Auburn before the fire broke out about 1.30am (AEDT) today.

It also follows an incident last night in nearby St Joseph the Worker Primary School where shots were fired into cars and parents abused during a Christmas carols service.

Considering the non-Christians have seen to it that Christmas is now offensive to their religion, what did they expect.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nobody goes in, no-one comes out

POLICE locked down Sydney's Sutherland Shire last night to keep invading hooligans out - and to contain local thugs preparing to cause trouble.

Drivers had to show licences and give a reason for entering the Shire.

Next, they'll be building a wall!

I don't think either group in this situation has acted correctly and both sides are clearly showing bias behavior. Furthermore I think a backlash of bias behavior is the expected result of bias behavior. It's natural for a group of "race A" to react to a group of "race B" acting in a racist manner towards them. Thus logically while all groups are acting incorrectly it is true that the group that started it can reasonably blamed for all that follows, though not freeing the other group from guilt on the individual level.

What we expect and how we assign blame are not relevant, besides you are only going into a near infinite regression on who started it first.
