Police Sued Over Skull Fragment

Associated Press

(Norwalk, Conn. -AP, December 8, 2005) - The family of a man who died in a car crash is suing the city and police after an officer allegedly stashed a skull fragment he said he planned to use as an ashtray.

Alfred Caviola, 62, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., died May 29 in a rollover crash in which he was thrown out of the driver's side window, according to the lawsuit.

Liam Callahan, a police officer at the time, allegedly took a skull fragment from the scene, stored it briefly in his locker and told co-workers he would bleach it for use as an ashtray.

Police Chief Harry Rilling fired Callahan in October after an internal investigation. The former officer is appealing the punishment, and a hearing is scheduled for later this month.
