jrockster21
Alot of fans were just hoping that we didn't get blown out this week. But for 3 quarters, this team showed everyone that we are just as good as any team in the league. We just need to learn how to put games away. Which is why next year.....look out. We are team on the verge of being a dominant force. We improved drastically from last year to this year, and I think the trend will only continue. Next year we hold on to our 4th quarter leads and we're 8-3, 9-2 instead of 5-6. Just think -- if we had last year's schedule with this year's team...oh my god! Annhilation! Jon T.
It's easy to be gracious winners. We've blown the last three games. We tried to pass on the Raiders, when we should've been killing the clock. Instead of throwing to beat SD's lousy secondary, we tried to run on the Chargers who've been very effective against the run. The Chargers game especially shows reactionary, simplistic thinking. I'm not advocating another coaching change, and I think that the game has passed Marty by, so even if I were, I would not be recommending him. But Gibbs does need some help on offense. Marty has Cam Cameron on offense and Wade Phillips on defense. Those guys are essentially running "his" team. Gibbs definitely misses Henning. We need him or someone like him (a Panthers assistant?) to jump start our offense. Also, Brunnell is hurt again. Not as badly as he was last season, but he is definitely scared to (or can't) run. I pin much of the blame for the last three losses on him.
bulldog
ultimately, you have to turn the corner on a program and show progress, ie moving from being competitive to actually winning football games. the Redskins played a mess of games close last season too in finishing 6-10. what I had hoped for was a team that in 2005 would be winning the close games against teams with roughly equivalent talent and losing games to teams with somewhat better talent like Denver and San Diego. the Redskins could have posted losses to Denver, KC, San Diego, NY and a split with Dallas and still finished with a playoff berth by merely beating the teams with lesser or equivalent talent, ie the Tampas and Oaklands of the world. I don't think recognizing that fact is dumping on the team, it is merely representing what we have seen out on the field accurately. The first step for a team that is progressing is they start to consistently beat teams they should beat. At 5-3, the Redskins failed to show they are yet at this point given the holes we see in the Buccaneers and Raiders.

I somewhat agree with you bulldog but I also look at a team that still doesn't have enough talent along both lines to really be able to turn that corner this season. bulldog
well, there are injuries at DT and a lack of playmaking at DE. fortunately, the club can make some changes at DE in the offseason under the cap and improve the defense. if you are talking about a talent gap on the offensive line we are in deep trouble. we are paying our starting OL as if they are all-stars. Thomas, Jansen and Samuels have large contracts with bonuses that mitigate against their leaving town anytime soon. We just signed Rabach in 2004. Other than making a move to improve on Dockery, who really should be a depth player at OG, I don't see anything coming on the OL in 2006. It would be nice to fnd a #3 tackle though that we can groom. Right now 43 year old Ray Brown appears to be the insurance policy everywhere but center. Joe Gibbs and Joe Bugel have to realize how thin we are on the line and how players like Molinaro have failed to show any significant improvement. One small improvement we've made though is this: Last year we hung around in games and eventually lost or the other team pulled away a couple times. This year, we're at least getting leads late in games and blowing them. I know that sounds stupid, but you have to have 4th quarter leads before you can learn to close them out. If I remember right, we only lost games like these last 3 once or twice last year. The rest were games where we trailed and just never mounted much of a charge but kept it close. Tarpon75
Right now it seems we can compete with any team in the league but can't beat any of them.Hopefully, this will change in the near future.
barefoot
I notice the 'skins regularly get more respect from our opponents and their fans (except for cowpies) than we do from a lot of forum members. sad, but true
HaVoC
Nope. I didn't say that. I implied that we should have kept Marty rather than firing him so we could hire Spurrier.Marty had a good "Joe Gibbs-style" team working here. He cleaned up our bloated salary cap, and brought a blue-collar brand of football to D.C. Whether or not he would have ever won in the playoffs for us is inconsequential. We would have been better off with him than Spurrier, and you can bet that Joe Gibbs would have been better off coming back to coach Marty's team than Spurrier's team. AND WE WOULD STILL HAVE STEPHEN DAVIS!!!!
CEJ2200
We're getting there -- we are very competitive. Other teams notice that and know that playing us isn't an easy proposition. We just need to learn how to get out of our own way at the end of games. Let's hope it starts this week at the Jones Dome We beat ourselves! I hope we can turn the corner on this, and am confident that once we do, 10 win seasons will be routine.
NoCalMike
The loss to the freakin' Raiders is a lot more depressing to me then the loss to the Chargers. We looked like a lost, helpless and college D-1AA team against a team as awful as the Raiders.
TD_washingtonredskins
AND WE WOULD STILL HAVE STEPHEN DAVIS!!!! I'm not so sure Davis would be all that effective as our every-down back... Betts would have been a good fit to replace him though. Marty would NOT have gone and picked up Portis...that much I'm pretty sure about.
FootballGuy2677
Right! Joe Knows..... Ok lets continue to fire coaches and bring in these old former star players every 2 years then...after all thats what your basically saying...
