Greatest black quarterback?

Cunningham was always a favorite of mine. Sure I hated what he did to our defense twice a year but he was truly something to watch. Most were impressed by his running but I thought that he threw a pretty deep ball.

Not to be a wet blanket but i'm not sure why we have to have a discussion about who is the best "black" QB of all time.

A QB is a QB, I don't care what color their skin is. I'd much rather have a discussion about who is the best left handed QB of all time, something that is an actually difference.

But if I was going to answer, i'd say Warren Moon.

There is no point in dodging the issue of race. It's one we deal with every day, and this is a very valid discussion.

Keep in mind when guys like Cunningham and Moon and Williams came up thru the system, black QB's were unheard of. The amount of obstacles they had to overcome in order to (1) play the position and (2) get good at the position certainly translate into a legitimate discussion about which among them was the greatest.

Appreciate your sentement, but it is completely misguided. I tire of reading about how we should ignore race.

Warren Moon has to be at the top of this list and also mentioned in the same breath as the Kelly's, Staubach's, and Young's. I think Montana, Marino, Elway and maybe Unitas stand head and shoulders above the rest of the pack; with Brady closing fast.

As black QB's go Moon's stat's alone distance him from the rest and when you throw in the longevity and success in Canada; case closed.

I think when you look at McNabb, you have to realize that he's done all of his work without benefit, except for one T.O year, of a solid go to receiver. If this dude ever got the weapons that most franchises provide, there would probably be some pretty nice hardware in Philly right now.

Cunningham had freakish ability. Decent coaching would've carried his Philly teams a lot further and added to his legend.

McNair on toughness alone is a close 4th. Plus having to face the Ravens and Ray Lewis twice every year probably muted some of the success that he and Eddie George could've enjoyed.

I'm not saying we should ignore race. Because race is probably a huge reason why there haven't been near as many black QB's as white QB's.

So discussing the the ratio between white QBs and black QBs is a very valid discussion in my opinion.

But I really don't think skin color has anything to do with how good of a QB you are, thats why I don't think deciding who is the best black QB of all time is all that important.

But i'm not annoyed or outraged by this thread or anything and like I said, for my 2 cents, Warren Moon is the best.

Though if you told Warren Moon he was considred the best "black" QB of all time he probably wouldn't care much, he'd want to know what you thought of him as a QB not just a black QB. Just like someone like Larry Bird doesn't care if he's the best white basketball player of all time.

Vick maybe one day.....right now however:

Doug Williams--- had a decent career with lousy teams and took advantage when he had his opportunity with the Redskins. 1 SB ring. 1 SB MVP.

Moon and Cunningham would also be in the running.

Mcnabb should be considered as well, but I still don't think he'll ever win a SB with the Eagles-- despite having alot of respect for him.

As much as I would like to say Williams, I can't. The correct answer is definitely Warren Moon. Close thread.

Moon was the best, but McNabb or Culpepper could be the best by the time their career is over. . . as for Vick, no. Gifted athelete, but he'll have a short career, and he'll be similar to Cunningham.

Culpepper's not even in the discussion, really. He hasn't been any good in several years. To be considered the best you have to have longevity. That and great numbers. Again, Moon is the only correct answer.

McNabb. He can do it all run pass and buy sometimes seemingly endless time in the pocket. His int to td ratio is very good and he's never had all the weapons. He played one year with TO, the only time he ever had a legit #1 wide out, and finished with a 100+ QB rating. Otherwise he's had a lack luster running game and a gaggle of wide receivers that would be listed 3rd and lower on most teams.

If Vick ever learns how to pass he could be the best. But I doubt he'll be in the league long enough to reach that point.

Ok, I digress. I do think McNabb is in the discussion. He or Moon. That's it.
