Daanie
I was just wondering why Dallas and Detroit always play on Thanksgiving...does anyone know the history/tradition behind this? I think its unfair to all the other teams... No one else gets the national exposure...
Tom [Giants fan]
I'm not sure how it started but I think it is fitting. Maybe because I'm used to it or whatever reason. It just feels right that they play on Thanksgiving. Plus, I wouldn't want the Giants to play on Thanksgiving. If they lost, it would ruin my whole holiday and four day weekend. [/quote']Detroit started the Thanksgiving Day tradition in it's very first year 1934. http://www.detroitlions.com/document_display.cfm?cont_id=147421 Cowboy fans can thank Tex Schramm for his brilliant move to take the Thanksgiving day game and make it a doubleheader. Actually, It's time for the NFL to make a prime time game on Turkey day. They should have an AFC game at 8:30 Eastern. Talk about a captive audience. Everyone is just sitting around anyway. If an NFL game was on, ratings would soar. Maybe let Buffalo host it. November in Buffalo with all the lake effect snow. Plus, that's just a football town. They live and die Bills there. stwasm
From what I understand, Tex Schramm wanted to give his team as much exposure as possible. So, he pushed to have the team play every Thanksgiving.
SkinsD
Detroit started the Thanksgiving Day tradition in it's very first year 1934 Yeah and Detroit has sucked since 1934 - put a game on everyone would want to see, like the Indy vs. Cincy game last week. TD_washingtonredskins
I'm with Tom, I like it. Maybe it's because I'm used to the tradition, but I think there's something to be said for tradition and maintaining some of it. It's not like Detroit plays Dallas on Thanksgiving, so each team gets a shot at playing on Thanksgiving at some point usually.

Drex
I would like for this tradition to continue. It's the way its always been for Thanksgiving Day, as long as I can remember.
Warhead36
I'm used to it now so I don't mind. If the Skins aren't playing I'll settle for rooting against Dallas! We also need Detroit to win to help take Atlanta out of the WC hunt.
tr1
I always view this as a gimme for the pukes. Always at home and 10 days of rest afterwards...late in the season. Time to rotate.
BigDFan5
When the NFL wanted to institute a second game on Thanksgiving nobody wanted to play the game So Tex volunteered the Cowboys knowing the exposure it would grner them. I believe in the late 70's they tried rotating the game and rtings plunged so Dallas got it permanently. Last season the crappy Bears played the Crappy Cowboys and had 22.7 million viewers

According to Jerry Jones last week...the NFL is seriously considering a Prime Time Turkey Game as well. Maybe next year!

Tom [Giants fan]
There is usually a college game at night. Tonight's college game isn't a very good one though.
TheKeyBlue
Dallas took the game when no one else wanted it. The only way Tex agreed to take it is if it was permanent. The NFL agreed.

88Comrade2000
They should had a primetime game for the AFC. Also, why does Dallas and Detriot have to host a home game for Thanksgiving? Who wouldn't want Dallas @ Washington on Thanksgiving- instead of the other way!
Mr. S
i think if Dallas and Detroit wanted the games, they should be allowed to host it every year. It has become tradition, and I highly doubt it has become soo anachronistic an idea that it needs to be changed. Im just glad to watch football on thursday instead of having to wait 'til sunday. This is a time I usually cheer for the Lions (unless they play the Skins of course).
mcarey032
Like I said in another thread...rivalry game. Dallas/Washington, Packers/Bears, Cheifs/Raiders. Something to that effect.
