Note on Pass Protection

while Davis and Bryan Johnson have seen scant time on the field in the first two games, the other backs including Watson, Gillespie, Betts and Cartwright have shown the typical rookie vulnerability in protection.

don't kid yourselves, one of the reasons the quarterbacks have gotten hit as much as they have is blown assignments by these younger backs.

in one sequence last night Cartwright went low on a rusher and fanned on the block entirely and the Panther made a bee line straight to Wuerffel.

in another Betts was trying to block a linebacker coming on a late blitz and he was overpowered as the guy went right through him.

Gillespie had the same thing happen to him in Japan.

eventually, these younger backs will come to understand that staying in to block for protection is as important an assignment as running the football or catching a pass.

but as is often said, it is the last skill rookie runners seem to pick up as they transition to the NFL.

Cartwright especially may be a nice story in terms of his underdog attempt to make the NFL at 5'7.

But make no mistake the offense right now suffers when Bryan Johnson leaves the game. Johnson has the protection schemes down and doesn't miss blocks as the lead at the line of scrimmage when clearing the way for Davis.

Overall, I think the pass protection has been outstanding and our QB's haven't gotten harassed too much.

On the other hand, when it comes to moving guys out of the for a running play, our line stinks. Almost every run goes straight into a horde of people, with no distinguishable lanes being created. I would like to see some more sweeps and off-tackle runs get called.

If we're gonna run, might as well do it behind Samuels and Jansen

I have a feeling that we aren't seeing too much of the run deliberately. Spurrier is concentrating on the QB race and he already knows who his starting rb is. They probably will throw a lot in the preason games because that is what other teams expect but come the season we will do our fair share of running and running effectively.

I thought gillespie was the one who dove under the LB, letting the LB get a sack. I seem to remember George, sonny and Irving saying that also. Of course they did miscall a bunch of other plays so relying on their call is iffy.....

Rock just stood there on one blitz and let the blitzer run by; never moving his feet, only his neck as the blitzer went by. It was almost as if he was saying, "hey you!, You're supposed to run through here so I can block you HERE."

Yeah we know what we have in SDavis but we dont know what we have in the Interior o line when it comes to run blocking.

Onc the regular season starts and we have sucess running the ball the defense of the opposing teams will be on there heels.

However the only way that can happen is when we sign a roadgrater to man the RG spot

SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!! SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!!

I am not sure I can take this. I have to see the games!! I can't stand not seeing what you reported!!

I believe he will get this system. He is a good ball player. I really believe in his abilities.

Bulldog, How many times did we run from a single back formation vs. the Panthers? Did you notice any difference when the fullback was blocking for the RB?

I asked about the same question in another post ... was Davis running solo, or did he have a lead blocker? Did the guards ever pull?

We, the geographically challenged, would love to know. :D

How could he do anything else?

From what I've seen this offense doesn't require great amounts of time for the QBs. The whole thing is based on WRs getting open and the QBs seem to have an idea about which guy has the best shot at getting open pretty quickly. Not a lot of waiting going on out there.

Only a couple of times the other night do I recall a QB staying n the pocket for very long without getting rid of the ball.
