OrangeSkin
This game showed that the young man, Julius Peppers, still needs a lot of work. The kid just does not look that fast or strong. He always seemed overhyped to me in college. Dwight Freeney will be a star in the pros, and Peppers will bomb. Dwight is the ALL-TIME NCAA CAREER SACK LEADER and holds the SINGLE SEASON SACK RECORD. He stole it from Peppers. I'm going to dig this thread up in 5 years. Take it to the bank.
Blondie
From cnnsi.com "The long drive was the first opportunity for Carolina fans to see Julius Peppers, the second overall pick, try to apply some pressure to Matthews -- an area the Panthers need help in. But the defensive end out of North Carolina was handled easily by 306-pound tackle Jon Jansen, and Peppers got winded late in the march and had to come out. " Don't ya just love it!! TennesseeCarl
From Biakabutuka to Carruth, the Panthers have had a lot of trouble with their first round picks. I know Peppers had his fans, but every time I watched N.C., he did nothing. I felt they could have gotten some serious offers for that #2 pick in a trade down. It was the right thing to do for a team that's hurting in so many areas. But that's why they were 1-15. I'm pleased they didn't work out a trade with us so that we could slip in front of the Lions to take Harrington. It could easily have happened. Carlito Sway
Wasn't he considered somewhat risky as he's more of an athlete and less of a behemoth for that particular position? I seem to remember reading pre-draft that some 'experts' thought he's be better if converted to linebacker. But keep in mind that Jansen is not your run of the mill, garden variety tackle. He's a rock; I'm sure Pep will fare better against your average NFL right tackle. Man, gotta love the bookends. If we could just convince the front office to suck it up and draft for interior line next year, it's ready to be dominant on both sides of the ball. PCS
Peppers; "Holy shiznit! they make them big and good here in the NFL". Jansen; " I'm sorry... You arrrrrrre?"
theposse
I didn't see Peppers in college but regardless of how good he is I'm not surprised he was manhandled by Jansen. The best DEs around, including Strahan, have trouble with Jansen. A rookie in his first preseason game didn't have much of a chance in this matchup. Peppers may or may not be great in the NFL, but a lack of success in this situation doesn't mean he was a bad pick.
Ford
This past year Peppers was controlled, and Sims was the best UNC defensive lineman. If you watched him the year before though, I don't think you would've found him overrated. That said, if focused on, he has alot of trouble shedding blocks and I don't think he will be a prolific pass rushing DE in the NFL.
Redskins4Life
This doesn't suprise me either. Peppers is a player with BUST written all over him, pretty much. Ryan Sims was a better player to get, that much is certain. But Carolina screwed up on this one, as they have in so many other drafts. But then again, the Carolina announcers last night said that he was 'outstanding' ... which I took at face value.
