Matthews completed 17 of 27 passes for 195 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in his first-half stint. Fred Smoot returns a punt with Carolina’s Brad Hoover, left, and Brad Jackson closing in. Stephen Davis follows his blockers Chris Samuels, left, and Rock Cartwright, right, through the hole. Davis had seven carries for 15 yards. Samuels suffered an ankle injury in the game and will likely be out 2-3 weeks. Rod Gardner breaks the tackle of Carolina's DeRon Jenkins for a 19-yard gain in the first quarter. Gardner was one of 12 Redskins to catch at least one pass. He hauled in two for 30 yards in the game. Robert Gillespie is tripped up in the backfield by the Carolina defense during third-quarter action. It was Gillespie’s only rushing attempt of the game.
