By Ron Hill

Special to NFL.com

Ron Hill has more than 25 years of NFL experience, most recently serving as the Atlanta Falcons vice president of player personnel from 1998-2005.

(Nov. 8, 2005) -- This is a great time of year to be a pro football fan. We just passed the midseason point, and with the seasonal changes, it's the time of year that fans really enjoy the tailgating and total game-day experience.

This also is the time of year when fans are asked to vote on and select the players that will make up the 2006 AFC and NFC Pro Bowl teams. It's also getting close to the time that players are asked to vote on their peers for selection to the 2006 Pro Bowl.

Being selected to the Pro Bowl is really an honor and is a goal most players want to reach during their NFL career. It's not really about the additional money they make by playing in the game, but it is the pride of making the team and being selected by your peers and the fans. A lot of the players that make the Pro Bowl usually take a large group of friends, family, position coaches, high school coaches or teammates over to Hawaii to enjoy the week in the sun. Being a participant in the Pro Bowl is a fun time for both the players and coaches involved in the game.

Making the Pro Bowl team does have a big impact on a player's future contract or the bonus money that he has written into his present contract, so there is a business side to being selected. The players also get a tremendous amount of media exposure, which leads to endorsement deals that mean cash away from the playing field.

Budding stars

Looking ahead to the 2006 Pro Bowl, there is a long list of deserving players that did not play in the 2005 Pro Bowl but are playing at a level that would warrant consideration for your vote this season. On the list below, we have a mixture of veterans and young players that weren't on the 2005 squad but are producing and playing at a very high level in the NFL today and deserve the recognition that may put them on the Pro Bowl roster in Hawaii in the very near future.

img9031232.jpgCarolina's Steve Smith could be headed to the Pro Bowl for the first time since the 2001 season. Trust me, I have been in the team meeting rooms and post-practice huddles when the Pro Bowl teams have been announced by the head coach, and you see the pride in the faces of the players that get selected, but you also see the tremendous disappointment in the faces of the players that maybe should have made it but didn't.

This list is made up mostly of what teams consider their core players -- the players teams want to extend and keep under contract on a long-term basis. These are the players that you win with in the NFL and you want to keep building your team around this group through the draft and free agency.

Some of the players on this list are becoming superstars in the NFL. But some of the others may be players that you have never heard of before yet they are playing at a very high level at the midpoint of the 2005 NFL season, and if they finish strong could be worthy of your 2006 Pro Bowl vote.

Players that did not make the 2005 Pro Bowl but should be considered this season (in alphabetical order):

NFC PLAYERS TO CONSIDER FOR PRO BOWL OFFENSE PLAYERS Quarterback Mark Brunell, Redskins; Jake Delhomme, Panthers; Eli Manning, Giants Running back Warrick Dunn, Falcons; Steven Jackson, Rams; Thomas Jones, Bears; Clinton Portis, Redskins; Carnell Williams*, Buccaneers Fullback Justin Griffith, Falcons Wide receiver Anquan Boldin, Cardinals; Plaxico Burress, Giants; Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals; Joey Galloway, Buccaneers; Terry Glenn, Cowboys; Santana Moss, Redskins; Steve Smith, Panthers Tight end Chris Cooley, Redskins; Jeremy Shockey, Giants; L.J. * rookie As you can see, many outstanding players did not make the Pro Bowl in 2005, so be your own judge of the talent on this list and on the team that you support. Study these players the next time you see an NFL game and make your decisions based on how they play. Remember, the NFC and AFC Pro Bowl rosters each have only 42 players and none of the above listed players were participants in the 2005 Pro Bowl.

Finally, a little bit of love about the people who didnt make the pro-bowl last who might make it this year. Redskins have quite a bit of players up there that have the talent to make it to Hawaii.

It will be tough for Moss and Brunell. They are more than deserving, but it is a popularity contest. It will be especialy tough for Brunell. McNass, Vick and Farve will make it every year forever. ShEli will probably get more votes than Mark.

And I really hate to say this, but Portis doesn't even deserve it right now. I still believe he is the 3rd best RB in the league, but he is not producing like it. Alexander, Jones, Barber, Dunn, and maybe even Jackson should get in ahead of him right now. That really pains me to print, but they all have more yards, TDs, and a higher averave than CP.

I'm going to go cry now........

What about washington and springs?

Well, the list was for people who did not make the probowl last year. So that would explain why Washington is left out. Springs, I don't know. In my opinion, he has really not played as well as he did last season.

Vick - Won't go

Farve - May go out of pity, but I doubt it.

McNabb - I don't think he will go. If he does, I doubt he will physically go. Too hurt. Therefore, an alternate would go.

I think Brunell has a very good chance of making it. He is playing at a probowl level, and he has been getting a lot of media attention for having such a turnaround.

I agree, Portis is not going to go, nor does he deserve to. He is filling a nice role for us, but lets face it. He could be doing better. Much of the blame may go to the line and playcalling, nonetheless, he is not producing and playing at a probowl level. His fault or not...

If you would have told me that Brunell would be not only a top probowl canidate but a very deserving canidate this year I would have laughed in your face....but he's as deserving as anyone this year.

Portis....not deserving this year SO FAR

Cooley...deserving thus far.

Arrington...nothing against him but he hasnt played enough games to be deserving...but the few that he has been a difference maker.

Moss...definitly deserving.

Rabach...seems to solidified the Center position...could be seen as deserving.

Thomas...i honestly dont know.

Griffin...should have been a no-brainer last year....will get healthy in next couple of weeks and will earn it i do believe.

Taylor....ugh...i'd say borderline at the moment.

Washington...who wasnt listed....should go if his solid season holds up.

I could see 5 guys going if we continue in the 2nd half what we began in the first (5 wins)...also Springs should be considered as well.

Derrick Dockery is quickly becoming one of the best guards in the league. He probably wont be there this year but in the next 1-2 years look for him. If Arrington can stay healthy, and play like he did the first 4 years of his career he will be worthy of the pro bowl. Moss is a definate. Cornelius Griffin is a good player we will have to see what he does before they have that pro bowl roster locked. I just wish we would have kept Fred Smoot, he was definitely on that up and comers list. Shawn Spring is a maybe.

I could see Randy Thomas going. He is isn't the best but he holds up the line as well as any other OG out there.

Griffin is my boy I would love to see him have the nod.

Washington was a great pick up last year and I can see him making it just not this year.

OFFENSE:

Brunell, Moss, Dockery, and Rabach should start.

DEFENSE:

Griffin, Taylor, and Arrington should start.

The reason why I say Arrington is the fat that there is no reason to believe that he will not produce the rest of the way.

Others are deserving but, those are the ones that SHOULD be starting.
