Gardener rules practice

CARLISLE, Pa. -- After watching new defensive tackle Daryl Gardner toss offensive linemen around like rag dolls for a second consecutive day, and after failing to budge the 6-foot-3, 313-pounder on the few occasions they clashed, guard Ross Tucker offered the ultimate compliment one football player gives another.

"He's a beast," said Tucker, no midget himself at 6-4, 316. "In players' terms, being know as a beast is a positive thing, and he is a beast, a man among boys."

Being a right guard, Tucker hasn't had many occasions to block Gardener, who lines up across from the left guard. But there were several plays where Tucker lined up at left guard, and ...

"I hit him a few times," Tucker said, "but I'm not sure he noticed. I'm just very happy he is on our team."

FAILED VENTURE. Defensive end Bruce Smith said he wasn't looking to make money when he joined forces with former NFL player Kenny Easley to form the Norfolk Nighthawks arena football team three years ago. But he didn't get into it to see it fail and be put up for sale, either.

"I thought it would be an enjoyable way to help provide jobs and rejuvenate downtown," he said Wednesday.

Smith said he would like to keep the team and try to at least make it a break-even proposition. But he said Easley, the businessman of the duo, doesn't want to take any more financial hits.

"My intent is to somehow keep it going," he said, "but I'm in a partnership, the losses have been significant, and we have to make a business decision."

STILL WIDE OPEN. Despite quarterback Danny Wuerffel's three-touchdown performance against San Francisco last Saturday, coach Steve Spurrier said he would continue to rotate Sage Rosenfels, Shane Matthews and Wuerffel for a couple more weeks before picking a starter and backup.

"I haven't ranked them yet," Spurrier said Wednesday. "We'll let all of them play, and in about three weeks we'll put them in order."

Matthews, who did not play in the first preseason game, will start Saturday night against Carolina and go at least one half. Rosenfels is expected to come in during the third quarter.

QUICK KICKS. Starting cornerback Champ Bailey suffered a dislocated left pinkie finger during practice Wednesday and is not expected to play against Carolina. ... Defensive tackle Santana Dotson, who ruptured his Achilles tendon Tuesday, was placed on injured reserve and will not be able to play this season.

One great aspect of this thread is that Snyder has clearly sent the signal that he is quite willing to look past others' pasts for the Redskins' future. In contrast to a couple of seasons ago, when Chris Mortensen et al were grinning through their teeth about how "no free agents want to be Redskins" it seems like we'll end up with the lion's share of A type, bad mofo free agents.

As for Daryl's being a "man among boys" all I can say is this:

Word.
