WILLIAMSBURG (AP) -- The College of William and Mary is defending its use of the "Tribe" nickname for its sports teams.

The Williamsburg college has submitted a report to the NCAA on the issue. The NCAA had identified the Tribe as one of several nicknames that could be considered offensive, as it relates to Native Americans.

The NCAA will analyze the report and determine whether "Tribe" is hostile or abusive. If so, it can ban William and Mary from using the title and logo in postseason events and declare the school ineligible to host postseason events.

W&M letter to NCAA

William and Mary teams were known as the Indians until 1980, when the school adopted the Tribe nickname. College officials say they consulted with American Indian tribal leaders, who didn't object to the nickname Tribe.
