  1. 1. Given 5:1 odds, which receiver do you think will be more productive in 5 years?

    • Gardner (you collect $100 if you are correct)
      28
    • McCants (you collect $500 if you are correct)
      15
    • Too close to call with those odds

Here are several advantages to the current situation at receiver.

1. Competition. The battle for #4-6 spots at the position are intense and pushing the guys really step it up. Yes, the argument can be made for all positions, but it really stands out here. Notice there were no dropped balls vs 49ers (that I recall). Pretty impressive considering the # of pass atempts, completions, and the fact it was the 1st game. Also route running was notable for so early in the season.

2. Off roster depth is being developed. I feel that whoever is cut (especially if it's Anthony) will not get a regular season spot elsewhere. If so, that leaves the option of bringing him back in event of injuries. Our WR will be more "exposed" due to the offense and have greater opportunities for injury, especially with the number of games on Turf. In season replacements for any injuries will probably come from someone now on the roster due to complexity of offense.

3. No true "Big names". This is a longer term advantage, since whoever steps up will have the opportunity to sign a longer term deal, with the Skins probably doing so at a "discount" to going rates for #1 or #2 money. The WR's realize that the system is going to allow them to put up nice numbers for exposure and that it will not necessarily translate to success with other teams. However, the argument can be made for the opposite effect. Inflated numbers=inlfated demands.

I was in camp for 3 days the week before the Japan Bowl game.. two of the receivers, McCants and Thompson looked like total crap. I was joking with my dad that they would be the first that I cut. Boy was I wrong. They looked like studs in the forty whiners game, I hope they continue to improve.

That's the problem with judging a guy based on one preseason game. Everyone thinks McCants, for example, is a lock to make the roster because of his performance in Osaka and that Skaggs is dead based on his. Maybe, maybe not.

Unfortunately, the same is true for the QBs. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief after the game, but did they really prove anything? Sage looked awful initially, and Danny did get to play against soon-to-be-cut 49ers with the Skins starting OL (at least for a few plays). If they stink it up against the Carolina Punters, are we going to see a collective mood swing on this board?

It's way too early to draw any conclusions. The Skins will probably keep 6 receivers. Gardner, Green, and Lockett are, barring injury, locks to make the roster. Thompson, McCants, and even Doering improved their position in the 49ers game. Skaggs, Anthony, and Johnson probably didn't (and Amaya is a novelty act). But if McCants drops a couple balls during the Punters game, and Skaggs runs back a kick for a touchdown, all bets are off, right?

I agree, I am not saying either of them will be stars, I just wanted to note how bad they looked before the preseason game. Funny, So many people were ripping Wuerffel and now they think he a lock to be the starter. HELLO, we still have 4 preseason games to go.

I bet you right now Skaggs is working his arse off like he's never worked before (and he's known as being one of the hardest workers on the team). I dobubt that he is satisfied with his performance in the game on Saturday so he wants to go out there and prove to everybody that he belongs on this level. I can really see him returning a kick for a touchdown as well as catching one or two touchdown passes.

Look for this guy to have big numbers versus carolina.

Green has the potential to be outstanding. The knock on him at Tampa Bay was he took plays off when we wasn't involved and a general lack of hustle. Unfortunately this was true but was due to increasing frustration over Dungy's offense, especially because they never threw the ball downfield where Green could utilize his speed. A motivated Green is a dangerous weapon and you can be assured he's motivated by the opportunities in this offense.

The big question mark is Reidel Anthony. He has great talent, hands, and potential to succeed in this offense. The worry is that he lost his competitive edge under Dungy's system and that his financial mess at the hands of Tank Black also put him in a funk. But if he gets on track he can make major contributions. I hope he realizes this is probably his last opportunity. I think the other teams in the league would figure if he can't play for Spurrier he won't be productive for anyone.

This season we will have only one game on turf and thats when we play the cowpokes but that stuff near grass in philly is still dangerous.

The shortest receiver who should make the squad is Lockett at 6'0.

Not a single smurf except at FB in our beloved Rock Cartwright.

Just two more days before I get my semi fix on redskin football.

I was counting Philly as a turf surface.

I thought Seattle was too, but I was thinking of the Kingdome (BTW, I flew over two hours after they imploded it.)

Didn't the Meadowlands used to be turf?? I'm glad to hear we only have 1(2 counting Philly) on the stuff. I hate it.
