Woman Sees Husband Off to War, Gets Fired

By Associated Press

Thu Oct 27, 4:46 AM

CALEDONIA, Mich. - A woman who took an unpaid leave of absence from work to see her husband off to war has been fired after failing to show up for her part-time receptionist job the day following his departure.

"It was a shock," said Suzette Boler, a 40-year-old mother of three and grandmother of three. "I was hurt. I felt abandoned by people I thought cared for me. I sat down on the floor and cried for probably two hours."

Officials at her former workplace, Benefit Management Administrators Inc., confirmed that Boler was dismissed when she didn't report to work the day after she said goodbye to her husband of 22 years.

"We gave her sufficient time to get back to work," Clark Galloway, vice president of operations for Benefit Management, told The Grand Rapids Press for a story published Wednesday.

He added that other factors were involved in the decision but he declined to elaborate.

On Oct. 16, Boler went with her husband, Army Spc. Jerry Boler, 45, to an Indianapolis-area airfield, where he and others in his National Guard unit gathered to be transported to Fort Dix, N.J. The unit soon will be deployed to Iraq, where he will help guard convoys from insurgent attacks.

Suzette Boler had received permission to take off work the week leading up to her husband's departure. As a part-time employee at Benefit Management, she did not receive vacation pay and was not compensated for her time off.

When Boler returned home from Indiana on the night of Oct. 16, a few hours after leaving her husband at the airfield, she said she felt drained by the emotional ordeal.

She said she had told her bosses that she would try to return on Oct. 17 but if she could not, she would definitely be back Oct. 18, she said.

But on the afternoon of Oct. 17, she received a call from work telling her to come in the following day and get her things because she was being fired. Her pink slip said the reason was she failed to show up for work Oct. 17, a Monday, she said.

"If I had even an inkling that I would be fired for not coming in Monday, I would have been there," she said.

I agree that there MAY be more to the stoyry. But, maybe not.

This is a crude work world. I've personally seen some unjustifiable and rash firings that were in no way merited. And it is cold-hearted. Whether there was more to the story, this was the instance they choose to fire her, and I think that is poor management to say the least.

Whatever the reason.. they will get plenty of unwanted attention now...

Bad management if they didnt let her know she would be fired if she missed a day.

If she told them.. On her part if they gave her a WEEK she might have put a little thought into it and made one of the days the DAY AFTER.. duh!....

That's horse****. She told them that if she wouldn't be in the day after he left, she would work the following day. Deployments are stressful on families. Especially when their loved one is going to a war-torn country. It pisses me off to think this woman's husband is giving his life to fight for this country's freedom; including the freedom to fire someone if you want.

i think it's messed up.probably a power trippin supervisor who is such a rotten person that they'll never find themselves in a position to have to see someone close to them leave like that.my boss is like that.such a jerk he has no one and so just expects that we all like to put in 16 hour days if needed cause we have nobody at home at the end of the day.i feel sorry for both him and her.

Yes, there is something "fishy" about this story. First, like Rocky21 mentioned, a 41 year old grandmother of three???

Then, the quote that there were "other factors that were involved into the decision."

I'm glad people are starting to look at news with a bit of skepticism, it is a good thing. There have been WAY WAY to many stories like this the past couple of years, just sensationalistic BS which tells nothing about the truth behind the matter.

... Suzette Boler, a 40-year-old mother of three and grandmother of three...

... her husband, Army Spc. Jerry Boler, 45

1) 40 year old grandmother of three

2) At 45, her husband is a Specialist (E-4)

Smells like a real winner to me.

Could be way off base, but those are the two tid bits that crossed my mind.

STILL, the guy is defending our country, and his family is left behind trying to support him and themselves. It's a tough road. If this employer was not fair, I imagine there will be some form of litigation coming at them.

Am I the only one freaked out about a 40 year old grandmother of 3?

Was that the point of the story? Maybe I have a reading comprehension problem.

Married at 19 her kid did the same thing and had triplets.

Though you are thinking in West Va/ Southern/Eastern shore Md girls are considered spinster old maids at 16 if they aint hitched
