4-3 or 3-4?

Something from a Giants message board intrigued me.

It seems like the Giants offense does have some trouble with the 3-4 defense. San Diego (until near the end of the game) and Dallas' 3-4 scheme created some confusion for their O-line and to Eli.

GW likes to mix up his schemes switching back and forth from a 4-3 to a 3-4 to even a 5-3-3, or other formations to create mismatches.

Playing a 3-4 against the Giants would also mean more serious playing time for Lavar along with Holdman.

Would it be beneficial to the Skins to play the Giants with a 3-4 for the majority of the snaps or do we not have the personnel to stop them like Dallas did? I know we played a lot of the 2nd half of the 49ers game in a 3-4, but that was after we gained a sizable lead.

I'm sure Gregg Williams will have a nice mixture like he always does and when he finds the PKG that creates the most problems for the gnats he'll use it to exploit their weakness. I liked the 3-4 seemed like the blitz were working really well, Lemar had a sack and crushed A.Smith on the ST INT. Only problem was all the Niners big plays came off the 3-4 set, probably due to the inexperience factor of playing that formation, but I'm sure GW has a good idea of how to get to Eli.

In the 3-4 we seemed to have more big plays but also gave up more big plays. It could be the inexperience factor like you guys said. But in GW's schemes, the DL is supposed to just eat up blockers so that the LBs can make the play. Maybe without that 4th lineman our LBs get easily blocked or held and thats when the big play occurs. Arrington, Holdman, Marshall, and Washington aren't really known to be great getting off blocks. Actually that is supposed to be one of their biggest weaknesses?

The 3-4 allows Lavar to be more in the "LT" role. Which probably really exploits his skill sets the best. It certainly did last Sunday. I think we will see it more and more as the season progresses.

That too me is good coaching. Lavar is too talented a player to not get the most from him.

Does anybody know what Williams is going to do? I mean really, I would not be surprised to see Griffin at CB.

Hell, Gibbs may not even know what Williams is going to do.

I'm going to show my age here, but anybody remember the playoff game vs the Packers back in '72? I was just a kid, it was blacked out in DC, I watched a snowy screen coming out of Baltimore. Could barely see the screen, but listened to Sam and Frank. Allen's defense started with a five man line. Total surprise to everybody.

Final score: 16-3 Redskins

I like the 3-4 alot. Since we dont have much of a pass rush anyway with our front four... it allows us to use different angles to blitz our best LB's (washington and arrington). Also, those two can defend the flats easier while Holdman and Marshall still are in the middle for run support. I dont think we will abandon the 4-3... I just think were going to see a healthy dose of the 3-4.

If GW sees a glaring weakness in the Giants against the 3-4 I'm sure he'll take advantage of it.. No sense even really worrying about it.

Yep. This reminds me of the Patriots defense a few years back that had the flexibility to be solid in the 4-3 and the 3-4 and could switch it up any given down. Not only were they familiar with both schemes, but would make plays and dictate the offensive tempo. GW loves players that can play more than one position. We are probably a large nose tackle away from doing the same.

When we are in the 3-4, who is the nose tackle, Griffin? Wasn't Noble in that role before he got hurt? We really don't have a natural nose tackle like Grady Jackson. Maybe that's why we get the big plays against us mostly in the 3-4.

I think this is the key.

We don't really have a big-time space-eater who can serve as the lynchpin for the defense. Neither Griffin, nor Salave'a, nor Boschetti/Killings/Jones is a prototypical NT who will eat up the OC and an OG. As a result, the interior OL is able to get to the second level and get their hands on our LBs, which spells big-time bad news.

The NT would be taken by Salave'a (300 lbs) and next to him in space, would play Griffin (300lbs).

why play 11 out there lets just put Taylor and Lavar out there and let them hit people..

That type of mentality is what got Arrington benched and what the coaching staff is trying to break Taylor of.

A successful defense is built on patience and discipline.
