Now I really believe we'll keep 4 QB's

Hey gator Guys, is there really a compelling reason to keep Matthews? I mean, there's always the injury contingency, but with every spot counting, can the Skins get by without him? Or is keeping Sage just a conceit? I don't see why they'd keep four QBs when the laegue rules say the third can't even enter the game unless the other two have been precluded from play.

We'll keep 4 unless one of the 3 (Sage, DW, SM) falls flat on thier face for the rest of camp. SS obviously emphasizes the QB and WR positions and we know we are keeping 6 WRs. Also, with the way SS pulls QBs, he wants to have plenty of options and I wouldn't think he would want to have to turn to Ramsey.

Yep, I think Sage will be elsewhere at the start of the season. It's a shame because I met the guy and he's as nice as they come. He also has a great arm, but since Marty drafted him I don't see him hanging around. 4 QB's on the final roster would be a waste of a roster spot.

Redskins close to signing QB Ramsey

Posted: Wednesday August 07, 2002 1:44 PM

CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) -- The Washington Redskins were close to completing a deal with first-round draft pick Patrick Ramsey, whose holdout reached its 16th day Wednesday.

"We're optimistically close to a resolution," said Joe Mendes, the team's vice president of football operations. "Hopefully, it can be done in the very near future, and hopefully that means [Wednesday]."

The two sides have long agreed on the base money of the contract -- about $3 million over five years -- but Sexton wanted to include clauses that would pay Ramsey more if he became the starting quarterback.

The Redskins became so frustrated at the pace of negotiations that they contemplated trading Ramsey's rights to the Chicago Bears, with discussions extending well into the night Tuesday.

Ramsey, who played at Tulane, was owner Dan Snyder's hand-picked choice as the final selection in the first round of the April draft and was initially seen as the franchise's quarterback of the future.

Head coach Steve Spurrier downplayed Ramsey's chances of starting this season, even before the holdout. Now that Ramsey has two weeks of training camp, he is likely to spend the season watching some combination of Shane Matthews, Sage Rosenfels and Danny Wuerffel.

Even if Ramsey were to practice Wednesday afternoon, Spurrier said he would not play Saturday at Carolina.

"Obviously you can't get four quarterbacks ready to play," Spurrier said. "It's hard to get three. We've been rotating three, and it's worked out pretty well in practice. But now we're getting closer to the season, you start rotating two."

Ramsey's absence has exceeded the 13-day holdout by Heath Shuler in 1994. The holdout haunted Shuler for all of his brief career, and he eventually lost the quarterback job to 1994 seventh-round pick Gus Frerotte.
