jrockster21
So...CP had to wait until week 7 before he got his first TD. I went back and looked at all the TD drives I've got footage of, and I noticed a pattern. This pattern became increasingly evident after the scrimmage on Sunday. Whenever they send Portis directly up the gut and/or pull offensive linemen within 5 yards of the goal line, they don't get in. Conversely, when they run zone-blocking plays to the outside, Portis scores. He should have gotten a TD against the Seahawks, I think he was robbed on that one. But even against the 49ers; on the first drive, they were about a yard away. Pulled Dock and Samuels, boom several 9ers are there to hit him in the backfield. So hopefully Gibbs stops doing this, because you can almost count on it not working. Of course, if we just keep hitting Moss for 30+ yard TDs, we don't even have to worry about the goal line plays!!! jrockster21
I'm pretty sure if we can see it the staff can Yeah, I hope so. They stopped doing it after the first TD drive against the niners...so maybe they're learning? But they continued to do it up until the 9ers game so...:whoknows:
Ricky Ervins
i thought about the same thing. Another play would be a quick toss to the outside. We have been very effective running it and a lot of times, its a GREAT goalline play because so many teams stuff the middle.
TD_washingtonredskins
Good analysis...I agree! I think he's either got to run something quick and up the middle or let CP sprint to the pylon... Pulling the guards seems to take too long to develop when all 11 defenders are that close to the LOS. If you notice too, we always run on first down, roll Brunell out and pass on second down... Yeah, the quick pitch would probably work as well...for some reason Gibbs just doesn't like to do that around the goal line...I'm not sure why. Or the same plays that are being run for Mike Sellers could be flipped and run for Portis...fake the dump to Sellers and then swing it to Portis or something like that...I could see that having a lot of success. orlskinsfan
I always have liked the stetch run play on the goaline...to many defenses commit to the middle leaving the outside more vulnerable...instead of making portis jam it up the middle give him the option where to cut up. Larry
Fake a reverse, then stop and pitch it to him. (Yes, it's a joke.)
dawgjk9
this is a good piont...as the staff was changing it they obviously see it too, and knowing gibbs it should improve weekly just as the team as a whole has

PF Chang
The pitch is a little questionable because you risk a fumble or a loss of yards, not somethign you want when you're inside the three or so. I think it would be effective, but the risk might be a little too much.
sableholic
I believe they even mentioned this in the game. They basically said you can't pull lineman at the goalline, they get too much push. When we ran it straight up, no pulling of lineman, we scored.
redman
Frankly I'm beginning to think this is universally true regarding Portis. Every time we run him between the tackles on a designed play there (not including draws) he seems to get stuffed, and that's true no matter how well we're otherwise running the ball. If we run him outside even a little bit, even off tackle, he seems to get yardage, even sometimes by cutting it back inside. Runs that allow him to choose his own hole clearly feature his talents best. I can understand "keeping defenses honest" by a few between the tackles runs per game, but we seem to do far more of those than is necessary. andavy
Portis talked about this in one of the interviews I saw following the game. He said that they finally decided to stop pulling linemen at the goal line and the results were better. Hopefully, he said, this trend will continue. MidPennSkin
If you notice too, we always run on first down, roll Brunell out and pass on second down... Hey, that's better than last year when we ran on first and second down and passed on third down almost every time we got near the goal line. Now if we could just roll out on first down sometimes..... Fifty Gut
noticed that as well in the 49ers game, all of Portis' TDs game off goal line zone blocking stop trying to stuff Portis up the middle in the red zone and throw him outside you can stuff him up the middle between the 20s
HailYeah
IMO that first TD try on the first drive was entirrely Samuels' fault...if he makes his block its and easy touchdown.
KillaCam21
We need more fakes on the goal line. When we run, we only run simple off tackle, up the gut, or pulling lineman plays. We need to start mixing in PA to the FB and then a pitch to portis or even run a draw play after faking the WR screen. Overall, however, I do agree with what most of you said which is that we just need to get Portis out wide. If we do that, we wont have ANY problems inside the ten. Josh90286
I've always thought the perfect goalline play is where they fake the handoff to the fullback and flip it out to the halfback. If you are playing an aggressive defense it kills them, and it opens things up in the inside for the future because they were burned on it before. Lifelong Skins Fan
I doubt if Gibbs sees it I hear he watches little film. No really I think everyone here knows that we have seen steady improvement since Joe came back. How many coaches, let alone hall of famers, would go to the shotgun after winning three superbowls without. This offense will continue to improve and the numbers will grow. What should really scare our oponents is that as our offense improves it will mean less oportunities vs our defense. And our defensive numbers will continue to shrink. :gaintsuck
