jpillian
You don't know, the point is, DON'T arm other countries, particularly small middle eastern ones.... duh... I know what you're saying Code; but in a lot of cases that is the only carrot we have to make another country do what we want them to do. In the case of Iraq, they were, what we felt at the time, the lesser of two evils. I'm not so sure that all of international relations hinge on this. In IR circles they recognize this debate as being between Realists and Idealists. I don't know -- good points all around -- just my :2cents:

Riggo-toni
How do you define respectable? I don't really care much about the character thing. Carter was a man of great character, and a dreadful president. Reagan was the last president who had any kind of real agenda and managed to deliver a significant portion of it (tax cuts, tax simplification, de-regulation, anti-communism). Granted, he failed in other areas, most notably spending reductions. To me, the most effective our gov't has been in my lifetime was when Clinton was President and Gingrich was speaker, and Gingrich was essentially setting the agenda (welfare reform, agricultural reform, holding the line on spending, etc.) I suppose the last truly respectable President, if one combines results with character, would probably be Eisenhower (his giving Marshall up to McCarthy notwithstanding). Predicto
Last "respectable" president? Probably Bush the Elder. I disagreed with many of his policies, but I respected his integrity. Nixon, Reagan, Clinton and Bush Jr. all had honesty problems. Carter and Ford had competence problems.
