Redskins attempting to deal first-rounder Ramsey

By Len Pasquarelli

ESPN.com

Even as the Washington Redskins on Tuesday continued negotiations with unsigned first-round draft choice Patrick Ramsey, ESPN.com has confirmed the franchise is attempting to trade him, and would deal the former Tulane star if someone met their asking price.

Toward that end, the Redskins spoke with Chicago Bears officials Tuesday afternoon and the discussions were expected to last into the evening. It's believed that Washington has granted agent Jimmy Sexton permission to speak with the Bears about a deal for Ramsey. From a technical standpoint, because of rookie allocation pool guidelines, the Redskins would still have to sign Ramsey first and then trade him to the Bears.

The trade possibility, however, is still only a longshot and the stronger likelihood is that Washington will reach a contract accord with Ramsey within 24 hours.

The final player taken in the opening stanza of the draft, Ramsey is one of five first-round choices still without a contract, and progress in negotiations has been incremental.

After the Saturday performances of Sage Rosenfels and Danny Wuerffel in a preseason rout of the San Francisco 49ers at Osaka, Japan, some club officials decided the Redskins could swap Ramsey and go into the season with their current quarterback contingent.

The idea, discussed internally among Washington staffers, picked up momentum Monday. It continued on Tuesday after Sexton and Redskins vice president of football operations Joe Mendes negotiated until about 3 a.m.

The prime trade target of the Redskins is Chicago, where it is no secret some Bears coaches and club officials regarded Ramsey very highly before the draft, and where he could be groomed behind Jim Miller and Chris Chandler as the quarterback of the future.

Washington is seeking a first-round choice in the 2003 draft and backup offensive guard Mike Gandy, a second-year veteran who was a third-round choice in 2001. That isn't too surprising, since the Redskins' guard play has been abysmal all spring.

The Redskins also felt they might be able to create interest in Ramsey from several other teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals, but that did not occur.

Another hurdle in any proposed Ramsey trade is a league-imposed deadline. According to the collective bargaining agreement, the rights to unsigned draft choices cannot be traded within 30 days of the start of the regular season. Because the season kicks off on a Thursday this year, Sept. 5, any deal must be completed before 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

Ramsey, 23, started 32 of his 35 games at Tulane and completed 798 of 1,355 passes for 9,205 yards, with 72 touchdown passes and 51 interceptions. He threw for over 2,800 yards and 22 touchdown passes in each of his final college campaigns.

Mike Gandy is good. He could start at guard for years. Plus, the pick that we would get would surely be better than 32nd overall. And we could package the two picks to maybe get Bryon Leftwich, who is a great scrambler. Unlikely to happen, but Leftwich is way better than Ramsey, and with two picks might be able to get him.

Why don't we wait and see how Wuerffel (or Matthews) performs.

The only reason this trade is being contemplated by the Redskins is because they believe they can get the job done with some combination of Wuerffel, Matthews and Sage. Trading Ramsey essentially means that for the next two years, our QB will be one or more of that trio (Wuerffel, Matthews and Sage).

The only way we draft a QB in the first round next year is if our starting QBs struggle this year. That's a scenario the team is obviously not expecting, if they are considering trading Ramsey.

Two seconds?

The deal would be done when I hear the

TR part of TRade

A first rounder and a guard for an unproven overhyped QB thanks to a combine workout in a QB poor draft?

I wish this would happen but I think unfortunately this is just postering.

Ok, but it's not like Ramsey will come in and tear it up right away. If we could get Gandy and a first rounder, then maybe we could package our picks and move up at least for Grossman. Then we would be set for a long time. We could use the other picks on the D Line and be set for years to come. I'm excited at this idea.

Spurrier was on with George and Sonny on the 6:00 news. George asked him about a possible Ramsey trade, and Spurrier did not eliminate the possiblity. He just said that we're comfortable with the quarterbacks we have, we're disappointed he's not here, and we'll just have to do what's in the best interest of the Redskins.

It's probably Spurrier's way of saying "Patrick, get your a$$ in here if you ever want to start for me." Personally, I think a trade is very unlikely. But if Ramsey believes it's a possibily, it might light a fire under him to sign.

Wasn't Ramsey just "gaga" over being with Spurrier and the Redskins after the draft? Didn't he say he wouldn't hold out...not gonna be another Heath? He is as bad as Heath with the length of the holdout now...He is losing the fans and probably his future teammates.

Has he said anything lately...other than "being beaten with the ugly stick" and fitting better in Chicago because of it.

LOL that was funny

I think he has been reading the extemeskins posts! He has been beaten in this forum with the ugly stick! I have been defending Ramsey for weeks. But, if he does in fact think he will fit better in Chicago...I say goodbye, especially if we receive what will be a number one and some help on the offensive line. It really is a no-brainer.

I cant see the bears giving up a 1st and a 3rd for a first. I think that its more likely for them to ask us to throw some more into the package, like a 3rd or 4th round pick next year. I dont think thats too bad cause we'll probably get a 4th or a 5th as compensation for our lost free agents.

Gandy and a first rounder is an absolute no-brainer.

Ramsey is an idiot if he didn't watch the game on Saturday and order his agent to close the deal immediately. "Let's see, do I want to play in Steve Spurrier's system where I will be a stud, or go play for the Bears? Duhh, let me think about that."

So who's the president? What exactly is the Redskins Fan Club of York, PA? Why do you need titles?

I've trumped you, because I'm:

President, Redskin Fan Club of Upper Lenox Road, Atlanta, GA

My apologies Atlanta, I'll say it real slow for you. There is a Redskins fan club in York, PA (about 75 participants). We are right between the Baltimoron Ravens fans and the Filthadelphia Beagles fan, so we try to stick together.

Sorry that your stuck in Hotlanta.

The more I think on it, Gandy and the 1st is a lot.....

Gandy would be a solid addition (read starter at guard), plus the 1st gives us two firsts next year and flexibility in next years draft.

While many quote "tons of Qb's next year" I figure some are going to falter and there won't be as many "blue chippers" as believed. but still there will be depth to select from. Or possibly trade both #1's to move up (Eli manning; DROOLLLLLL)

Or the flexibility to go DE or Dt in the first along with something else.......

But I bet if it were to happen, it will more than likely be Gandy and a 3rd. a 1st and gandy seems to be a Ditka type deal...........

Interesting that Lenny the Hutt leads with the trade possibility but writes it is much more likely that Ramsey is signed within 24 hours. This is a bargaining tactic. The team is telling Ramsey to go sign somewhere else if he doesn't like it. I would also take that trade, but I don't think it is going to happen.

I also have to ask what Lenny is talking about when he says our guard play has been abysmal all spring. Perhaps that's so, but, it's been summer for months now. Isn't it a bit off kilter to be rating our line on May practices :).
