DjTj
So we scored our first 4 rushing TD's of the year today. Great for Portis, but maybe even better for our offensive line. The Dirtbags deserve some serious props for their play today. Touchdown #1: 1st Qtr (4:52) - 1st and goal from the 5-yard line Portis in a single-back formation with Royal lined up on the right side and Cooley just off the line. There are two WR's on the left and Santana Moss comes in motion to the right side. The play is simply an off-tackle right. The entire line blocks right, and Jansen seals his man to the inside. Cooley kicks his man out and Royal rides his man into the ground. Portis hits the hole hard just outside of Jansen, and he walks into the end zone. Result: Laffy Taffy. Touchdown #2: 2nd Qtr (5:42) - 1st and goal from the 1-yard line Portis and Sellers line up in the I-formation. Again, Royal is lined up on the right side with Cooley just off the line. Cooley goes in motion to the left side. The play is off-tackle to the left. The entire line blocks left, and Samuels seals his man to the inside. Cooley blocks the lone defender on the outside, and Sellers blocks a linebacker trying to get around Samuels. Portis just runs to the outside and goes in untouched, although a defender tackles him in the end zone. Result: Cartwheels. Touchdown #3: 3rd Qtr (11:08) - 1st and goal from the 1-yard line Exact same play as Touchdown #2. The 49ers watched some film during halftime though, so a defender follows Cooley across the formation. This defender is waiting on the outside when Portis gets to the line of scrimmage, so he cuts it inside of Sellers and dives into the end zone. Result: Napolean Dynamite. Touchdown #4: 4th Qtr (9:30) - 1st and goal from the 4-yard line Rock Cartwright is in a single-back formation with WR's on both sides. Royal and Cooley are again on the right side. I believe the play is another off-tackle right, but the Rabach and Dockery just destroy their defenders and basically push them all the way into the end zone. Rock runs into the gigantic hole in the middle of the line and scores the touchdown easily. Result: High-fives from Dockery and Rabach, then Jansen, then Portis. All these plays were actually pretty simple - no pulling guards, no counters, no traps, no tosses, just the offensive line dominating the defense and a runningback making one cut. Great game Dirtbags :applause:
Ignatius J.
I think that the first touchdown was on the classic zone stretch play. If that's the play I'm thinking of, you can see portis watching the play develop, but then he sees a whole and cuts upfield. While the dirtbags did have a great game, I think that the first touchdown we scored had a lot to do with it. We've been passing for all of our touchdowns in the goal line, so I think (especially on the first rushing touchdown) that defenders were finnally starting to think pass first. Cherokee
And now, if only all our opponents could be so easily deceived, that the blocking schemes are dominant, that we average 5.5 yards per carry. Life would be magical, and the Redskins would be feared with a bruising running game.
Dalecitymike
The Dirtbags did very well as Brunnell said in the post game it starts at the line first we couldn't throw or run if the job doesn't get done there first. Let's not let this win go to our heads the 49ers have the worst defense in the league.
