What's up with the Davis contract?

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this. In case you missed it, SD just signed a new contract which is shorter in length and which guarantees some of this year's money.

The net result is that his cap value for this year drops by $750K, but his cap value in 2003 and beyond goes up.

What is up with this? The problem with his previous contract was that he was going to cost us eleven bajillion dollars next year and more beyond that. This new contract only makes it worse.

I read two things into this. One, we don't plan to cut Davis next year. The dead money hit, already bad, would become worse under the new contract.

Second, we plan to spend some serious money on a FA or two this year, but who? If I remember right, we were sitting about 3 million under this year's cap before we signed Gardner. Gardner will cost us $750K this year, but with the new Davis contract we got that back.

A guard won't cost $3 million, so what is going on? Are we still pursuing Adams?

Well if that is the case then the Panther game should be the last chance for some of these guy to prove themselves.

I also read somewhere that some of this money might go toward locking up Jansen which would be great. And then maybe getting a guard or two. I think the cap hit for next year is the same so we aren't out of the woods in our big decision next offseason with Big Country Davis.....
