Fergasun
I hate the baby boomer generation... they completely spawned all the materialism and selfishness that is too ugly in the world, they completely spawned all the lawyers that our country is overrun with and are doing a horrible job running the country and providing general leadership to the next generatoin that is desperately needed. I don't know what happened... coming after the "Greatest Generation" you would think that the sacrifice of their parents for the country the baby boomers would be grateful, but they've done nothing but buy into the ideal that more is better, more money, more houses and haven't done much to help those who truly are in need. They also are the reason we have the whole political atmosphere we do... just bickering back and forth and no real dialogue... and they invented political correctness. This is just a rant I've had on my chest for awhile... I'd like someone to show me some of the good things that baby boomers have done... I can't get past them running up the national debt and trying to own 2 or 3 houses, completely screwing over their children who are just now finding out we can't afford to by a portajohn on a 10 ft square lot. Even my parents are guilty... buying a nice pleasure boat, buying a SUV to tow said boat... buying a vacation home. I can't complain about the home, just the fact that it seemed like they were quite interested in collecting possessions, and it seems like your possession collection directly correlates to status nowadays. Well, as I said, I feel like ranting over the internet and I'd like to hear some positive things that have happened in America since the baby boomers took over. I'd say this probably occured sometime in the 80s. Maybe I just hate yuppies...
Commander PK
I can't argue with you. I've found much of this to be the case also. I'm not so sure that the country is "improving." I think we have a lot of social issues in the United States that are going too boil over eventually. We put way to much emphasis in this country on things that don't matter. How much money is in your pocket. What kind of car you drive. How big your house is, etc. Status is a big deal here. I'm reminded of a quote from the wife of a U.S. Marine who fought in WWII. Her husband and her were at the dedication of the World War II memorial, and she was asked her opinion on this very subject. The idea that the subsequent generations since the "greatest generation" have been whiney, sniveling, and lazy. Expecting a life of comfort and luxury with no price to pay. No battles to fight. Her response was something to the effect of "If subsequent generations have been spoiled, and coddled. It's our fault. We had nothing...and we wanted them to have everything." It struck me then, and I just thought of it now. She's probably right.

Shallow1
It was the Greatest generations motto: "We will work hard so our kids wont have to." the "Baby Boomer" are nothing more than a product of that. "Baby Boomers" have sacrificed the moral integirty of this country just to make a buck, get in positions of power, cause cooruption at the highest level of the political and buisness systems,do whatever makes them "feel good" all the while racking up tremendous amouts of debt. I do feel sorry for them though, all of this mess they live and created has put them all mostly dependant on alcohol,drugs,anti-depresants, some other expensive form of detachment so they dont have to take accountablity for there own actions. I feel sorry for there kids as well, they are following suit nicely.....A.D.D.,A.D.H.D., Hyperactive,....ect.ect. ......
Cdowwe
You have to remember that the times are not the same. The morals of this country has gone down alot, but youll have to argue with others that this is a bad thing.

Waldo da Magnificent
Every generation believes their kids are whinny snivelling brats. WWI vets thought the country was doomed in WWII, because the military was soft and weak - and "proved" in their minds by the early defeats in the pacific. SkinsHokieFan
I am with you in a sense, but a lot of important social changes occured because of their "antagonism" However, yeah, they basically screwed up In the 50s they were spolied In the 60s they rebbelled In the 70s they did every drug and had as much sex as possible In the 80s they did anything to make money In the 90s they spoiled their kids rotten
Ignatius J.
The greatest generation thought that it was a good idea to kill blacks who looked at white women. I'm not sure you can really say that we have gone very far downhill from that. Look every generation has its strong and weak points, and if you make sweeping generalizations like I just did you can paint any generation as weak and spoiled. I think the fact is that every generation is trying to the best for itself and on the whole trying to make things better for everyone else too. One thing that irritates me, is I think some people believe, because racism, and race based hate crimes were alive and well during the 40's and 50's...does that mean that the entire way of life of that generation from A to Z was wrong? Certainly, not everybody that lived then were lynching African American's for looking at white women. There are other sides to life besides race you know. Should everything that generation stood for be dismissed because a great many were racist? I think in many ways, they were doing it "right." Better than we are. The best answer always lies in the middle. We have yet to find a happy medium in this country, that lets people do what they want, but they use common sense also. Just because it feels good, and you can do it...doesn't mean that you SHOULD do it. There are consequences for every choice you make...good or bad. Ignatius J.
Painkiller, I think you are paying a bit too much attention to my first paragraph and not enough to the second. We are getting a lot of things "right" now too. If you ignore all the good of our generation and ignore all the bad of the past generation, of course the past will look better. dreamingwolf
I read an interesting bit about a book once about generations, the author claimed that there are only 4 types of generations and they are cyclical with each generation spawning the next one. http://www.timepage.org/time.html This guy summarizes it, still havent got arround to checking the book out it sounds interesting. Well, in all seriousness I think because I work in a jail, I have a somewhat "skewed" view of reality. It's hard to see things postive, when you are surrounded by so much negative everyday. DeanCollins
You all aren't going to want to hear this, but one thing that Generation did do was raise awareness to the environment, individualism (freedom), peace, and our facist govt. in the 60's. It had a profound affect, for awhile. But now we are back where we started. IMO created the best rock music ever.
