Study: Teen Girls Leading Sexual Revolution

Average Age Of Sex For Girls Is 15

SAN DIEGO -- A new study shows that teenage girls are having sex at a younger age than ever before and are taking the lead in dismantling sexual taboos.

According to the study, the percentage of young girls who participate in premarital sex jumped from 12 to 79 percent over the last 60 years, while the percentage of young men who participate in premarital sex jumped from 42 to 71 percent.

The study, which was co-authored by Jean Twenge of San Diego State Univeristy, looked at sex surveys done between 1943 and 1999. It found that the average age teenage girls had sexual intercourse in 1999 was 15. The average age during the 1950s and 1960s was 19. Overall, the percentage of sexually-actively teenage girls in 1999 was 50 percent, compared to 13 percent in 1943.

Twenge said birth control and cultural acceptance are the main reasons for the changes. She does not feel the prevalence of sex on television has contributed as much to the phenomenon as people think.

"Television shows like Dawson's Creek and The OC that show high school sex didn't really show that until it was actually happening in high school," Twenge said. "It was really art imitating life instead of life imitating art."

The study also showed that oral sex is not nearly as taboo today as it was in previous generations. Between 1969 and 1993, the rate of women engaging in oral sex climbed from 42 percent to 71 percent. For men, the rate grew from 48 percent to 72 percent.

"In previous generations, oral sex was considered disgusting," Twenge said. "Now young people see it as another way of being sexual. It's also part of the general trend of sexual behavior moving away from marriage and reproduction and toward pleasure."

The study appears in the latest issue of the Review of General Psychology.

You can tell I'm the one without kids because my first thought was . . . man did I miss out.

I grew up in the 80's, the decade of AIDS and fear of sex. You know, the decade sandwiched in between the free loving 70's and the "it's cool to be a girl who's a switch hitter" 90's. I still got some, but man, I would have REALLY had a good time now

damn 60 years ago only 12% of girls had pre-marital sex while 42% of boys did?

Must've been some serious sluts out there.

Or...more likely, a lot of girls would not admit to it even in a survey. After all if you were them....why risk telling anyone?

Personally I think the rise is caused by the over sexed nature of society today. Everything is sexual in modern america. Shows center around who is sleeping with who, ads use sex to sell virtually everything, and kids these days have less to do and more time to get into trouble. The troubling thing for me is that each year sex becomes more of a fun activity then a meaningful expression.

I do find it interesting that the double standard is still alive and well. You'd think society would have figured out that one father telling his daughter "do not do it" is no match for a million little boys who's father is saying little more then "atta boy"

A friend of mine in college had a dad in the Air Force. On her first date he had a friend come over in his cammy's and they were cleaning shot guns on the front porch. They also made a gravestone and put it in the front yard with the boy's name on it.

A bunch of guys I knew used to love girls with families like that. They were always just itching to piss off daddy.

Or do y'all just not want them to date guys like you?

Think what y'all were like at that age. Do you want your daughter to date that kind of boy?

According to the article, it's the girls fault...not the guys...

The AVERAGE age is 15??? Man, that means there are girls doin' the nasty a lot earlier than 15...I wonder what the standard deviation on that is. There was a girl in my school who got pregnant in the 6th grade, so I knew they were bonin' that young, but damn! I mean, damn! That's parenting right there, good parenting in a loving home and your daughters will wait unit 17-18 before they start lettin' dudes lay the pipe. That and a few well-placed death threats oughtta keep em virginal!! :D

This is very disturbing... I love how the article refers to 15 year olds having sex as breaking down a "taboo" - it's a taboo for a reason. I pray that I don't have daughters!

I was happy to see the rise in the acceptance of oral sex however!

Sorry, but parenting has nothing to do with it 90% of the time, it is peer pressure. You could be the absolute best parent in the world, but teenagers are still going to make mistakes, it is part of growing up. Sometimes keeping a tight rope has a detremental effect, as most of the guys who went to college know all to much about "daddy's little girl" when she gets to college.

There really isn't much you can do about it, other then make damn sure if your child is having sex they use protection.
