Pity us Jets fans... The curse of Joe Willy kicks in once again. We get a QB who is compared to Joe Montana, and all of a sudden he gets a freak injury, and his career is over.. Just like in 1999 where we were a trendy pick to go to the superbowl our QB gets injured, and out for the year..What a sad franchise..Joe Willy curse had to take Jay Fiedler too lmfao

Jets preparing QB Bollinger to play against RavensESPN.com news services

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Brooks Bollinger is confident he can shoulder the task of being the New York Jets' starting quarterback.

The third-stringer will likely get the chance next Sunday against a tough Baltimore defense because of shoulder injuries to both starter Chad Pennington and backup Jay Fiedler. The two were injured in the Jets' 26-20 overtime loss to Jacksonville on Sunday.

Pennington's agent, Tom Condon, said Monday evening that, even after an MRI exam of Pennington's injured right shoulder earlier in the day, there is still no determination on the extent of the damage or on how long he might be sidelined.

Condon told ESPN.com that Pennington will be examined later this week by Dr. James Andrews, the noted Birmingham, Ala.-based orthopedic specialist who performed the surgery on the quarterback's rotator cuff this spring. Condon did not yet know when the examination will take place.

"There's nothing yet," Condon said. "We'll just have to wait and see what Dr. Andrews says after he gets a look at it."

But Jets coach Herman Edwards wasn't waiting for the results.

"I'll know more probably [Tuesday] on the status of both guys," Edwards said Monday. "At this point, I'm preparing Brooks Bollinger to be our starting quarterback."

Bollinger, in his third season with the Jets out of Wisconsin, has appeared in just one NFL game, last year against Arizona. He replaced an injured Quincy Carter in the Jets' 13-3 win and was 5-of-9 for 60 yards.

"I'm just going out to try and execute the plays that they call with knowing that I have an understanding of how to manage a football game and what I need to do to help the team win," Bollinger said. "I'm not trying to make it into rocket science."

Bollinger hasn't taken many reps since the season started, but had a lot of work during the preseason.

"He's a heady player, he's a gamer," Edwards said. "He can move around a little bit and make some plays with his legs. He's been a guy who's been here and he's been looking for a chance."

At Wisconsin, Bollinger broke the school record for quarterbacks with 518 carries for 1,767 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns, and was just one of seven Big Ten passers to win 30 games in his career.

"I played at a fairly big college, but I think when you're in the NFL and in New York, there's a lot more that goes into playing quarterback than just on the field," he said. "I have to eliminate any outside distractions I can this week and just worry about what I need to do on the football field."

Edwards said depending on the results of the MRIs, Pennington could possibly serve as the backup to Bollinger. When asked if the team would consider signing a free agent, such as Vinny Testaverde, Edwards said the Jets would discuss that once they had definite diagnoses on Pennington and Fiedler.

"All the powers that be will huddle up," Edwards said. "We'll get a lot of phone calls from agents, I'm sure."

The Jets are bringing in three quarterbacks -- Doug Johnson, Jesse Palmer and Jonathan Quinn -- for a tryout, John Clayton has learned.

Another player who might be considered is former Dallas starter Quincy Carter, who played for the Jets in 2004 and started three games.

Pennington, who had offseason surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, was sacked on consecutive plays during the Jets' first series of the second half against Jacksonville. On third-and-11, Pennington was taken down by Bobby McCray and the quarterback fumbled for the second straight down and recovered the ball, but his shoulder was injured on the play.

Fiedler came in, but was hit while completing a 16-yard pass to Justin McCareins -- his sixth play in place of Pennington -- with 13:09 left in the fourth quarter. A downcast Fiedler indicated after the game that he was fearing the worst.

"I kind of landed with my arm above my shoulder and I felt something go," he said Sunday. "I knew I wasn't going to be able to throw a football."

Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger told The New York Times that Fiedler will definitely be out for Sunday's game against the Ravens.

Pennington came back to lead the Jets on two scoring drives, both capped by field goals, but clearly was hurting and said after the game that the injury felt "similar to last year." Even so, Edwards thought he and Pennington had made the right call by letting him back in against the Jaguars instead of going with Bollinger -- though the play calling was limited by Pennington not being able to throw long.

"He gave us the best chance to do what we needed to do to win the game," Edwards said. "I had reservations, but he was able to go in and do some things."

As for Bollinger, he's looking at his NFL starting debut as a chance to show the Jets what he can do -- but he's focused on the task at hand: beating the Ravens.

"I think anytime you get an opportunity in there as a quarterback, especially not being a first-round pick or whatever, it's an unbelievable opportunity," he said. "It can turn into anything, but again, there's enough on my mind and I have enough to worry about this week that whatever it turns out to be down the road, fine, great, but I'm just worried about this week."

Edwards said an MRI revealed that offensive tackle Jason Fabini has a Grade II sprain of his right knee, but will be fitted for a brace and should be able to play against Baltimore. Linebacker Eric Barton has a strained ankle, and his status for Sunday's game was uncertain.

Information from The Associated Press, John Clayton and Len Pasquarelli was used in this report.

He shouldve never been compared to Montana in the first place.

You guys would be lucky to get a second round pick for Ramsey.

The Jets really dont need a stop gap right now. They need to just bring in 3 young QB's and let them fight it out.

Even if Chad is able to come back next year, there is still that fact that he is injury proned and has a shoulder that has been operated on twice.

That sucks for Chad and Jets fans. Although he wasn't right to begin with. He had no velocity on his passes and just wait until the winds pick up in NY. I am a big Pennington fan b ut the Pennington I saw early in the season is a far cry from the good QB we have seen in the past.

According to Pastabelly in his noon chat, the Jets called Gibbs and he said no thanks. It doesn't even seem they got far enough to make an offer, Joe turned 'em down right away.

I knew he wouldn't do this in-season, no way Joe's gonna rely on a rookie behind Brunell. I also think this might signal that Ramsey ain't done as a Redskin. Just like Joe didn't give up on Brunell, I think he still has plans for Ramsey.

Hope you're right. I'm not ready to give up on Ramsey yet, either.

Also, no way you want to leave that back-up position so unexperienced.
