McNabb is hurt worse than you know

It could be a long, painful year for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

While the world watched McNabb suffer a bruised sternum on national television in the opener, a new injury has flared up for the star quarterback — an injury the team fears could affect him for the remainder of the season.

NFL Week 3

FOXSports.com has learned that this week the Eagles star quarterback was tested for a sports hernia, a very vague tear or "disruption" in the abdominal area that does require surgery. McNabb had an MRI taken early this week and the results were sent to America's foremost sports hernia expert Dr. William Meyers.

According to those close to McNabb, the MRI was not conclusive enough to determine whether or not McNabb had an abdominal strain or a sports hernia. Often an MRI doesn't show a sports hernia in the early stages. In fact, in many cases a proper diagnosis cannot be made for quite a while.

But if McNabb does have a sports hernia, it would explain his reluctance so far this season to run with the ball. Fans and media have been wondering why McNabb has not run the ball as often as in the past. Heading into Week 3, he had just the one rush for no gain. Such an injury is excruciating when a player tries to open it up.

If, in fact, McNabb's ab strain turns out to be a sports hernia then he will have to play through the pain in the area for the remainder of the season as rest and treatment won't really cure the problem. Surgery would also be required following the year. The team would have to monitor his reps in practice throughout the season and rest him at times during the week until the Eagles season is complete.

The painful injury may have resulted from how much work McNabb does on his core. McNabb was first tested for the injury when he tweaked his core area in camp but at that point too Meyers found nothing conclusive. The fact that the pain is still prevalent has led the team to fear that he could have a sports hernia.

Sports hernias are prevalent in many athletes and can linger painfully for a while as making a definitive determination is still difficult in the medical field. The team's hope is that he simply has an abdominal strain that won't go away. That at least would preclude him from having surgery and treatment would also eventually alleviate the problem.

If McNabb does end up needing surgery for a sports hernia, he could expect to be sidelined for four to six weeks. But even if surgery is required, the team does not anticipate him having it during the season.

TRADE WINDS: While the NFL trade deadline remains a few weeks away, two running backs have already been placed on the block.

Vikings running back Michael Bennett was not only offered up to the Cardinals this week for a sixth-round pick but he was also offered up to the Jets and Raiders according to officials from those teams. The Cardinals trade isn't totally dead yet, as the team wants to evaluate their position after Sunday's game.

Arizona was set to start Marcel Shipp and J.J. Arrington together in the backfield early and the team will see which one steps up. Shipp should get the early carries.

As for the Jets and Raiders, neither team showed any real interest at first.

The other back now on the market is Cowboy backup RB Anthony Thomas. However, he had little value on the free agent market and has little trade value now.

SECURITY, CAN WE CAN HAVE SOME SECURITY OVER HERE? The San Diego Chargers brass held a security meeting this past Monday. The result? They actually decided to bring in extra security and police for the Eli Manning game on Sunday night.

Talk about having some bad blood toward a young man. The team is concerned about rowdiness and fan venom directed toward Manning, who shunned the Chargers' advances at last year's draft.

CALLING DOCTOR DAVE: When Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pulled his hamstring this week there was fear he would be shelved on Sunday. But the Falcons have a secret weapon down in Atlanta. A man known lovingly as ... Dr. Dave.

Dr. Dave practices a physical rehabilitation technique named ART or active release therapy. According to players who live and die by the guy's touch, Dr. Dave has saved a bunch of the Falcons players. This week Vick limped into his office and after just one therapy session his teammates say the improvement was unbelievable. After missing the day's practice, Vick saw Dr. Dave and was on the field running around the very next day.

Heading into the game he was about "90 percent" according to one Falcons official. Whether or not his hammy could sustain the pressure he puts on his muscles in game situations remained to be seen, but Vick at least was healthy enough to fly going into the contest.

TICE'S FUTURE: For those who think Vikings head coach Mike Tice will be fired in the near future, there are no immediate plans for this action. In fact, new owner Ziggy Wilf wants to ride this storm out so as not to make any rash decisions during his brief career in ownership.

There are two wild cards in this however. If things go terribly wrong and the team ends up quitting on Tice, then a move would likely be made. Recent memory, however, tells us that when a team quits on a coach, the coach in question often times walks away rather than officially getting fired (i.e.: Dan Reeves, Dave Wannstedt, Butch Davis).

But the other wild card is what happens if the team is utterly embarrassed again like they were last Sunday? Emotions run very high when a team with such high expectations falters so terribly. If that were to happen, nobody should be surprised if the trigger is pulled.

The viable option to replace him as head coach if an in-season move is made is defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, who has had several head coaching interviews.
