Applying To College

Well it's that time in life for me to start applying to Colleges.

I need a bit of help, would like some advice on where I can go.

My total GPA is 3.47 but I haven't really taken any hard classes save for Pre-IB English 9 and Pre-IB World History, both in 9th Grade.

I don't have many clubs either, just FBLA(Future Business Leaders of America)and I was in DECA last year.

No work experience, no sports, no volunteer work, nothing.(Damn ES for taking away my life ;))

I also got a 1690 on the new SAT which is out of 2400. May retake.

Anyhow, what do you guys think of my chances of getting in to the following schools?

George Mason University

George Washington University

University of Maryland

Georgetown University(yeah probably 0%)

American University

Marymount University(need a gimme)

maryland and american will also be very hard to get into. i had a 3.7 gpa, 1200 SATS (the old test), all AP classes, 4 varsity sports, a job, and a billion clubs and i still didnt get into maryland  ...not to say you wouldnt get in, it's just tough.

you could probably get into the others if you have quality references and essays.

yahoo has a search engine it runs on colleges that tells you each colleges level of difficulty of getting into and some other facts abotu the school, you should check that out.

I don't know about your chances at any of those places, but what I would recommend is spending some time on each one that you think you have a shot at to get a sense of the place you prefer the most. When the acceptances come rolling in, that'll make your final decision easy. I know that's not the advice you're looking for, but I thought it worth saying nonetheless.

I had like a 3.7 and 1150 SAT (old score), I knew JMU was my safety at the time. I guess i had more work experience and some activities.

Mason should probably accept you with those numbers, and I wouldnt be surprised if Va Tech does as well.

What is now the usual average on the new SAT, I know the old one was like 1000 and getting accepted youd usually need anywhere from 1100-1300

Tech? Naw. Tech got a lot harder to get into starting in 2000 after Vick had his way with the team there. It used to be Tech was kind of easy to get into, but I don't think it's the case now. I got into tech in 2000 with a 3.5, 1170, sports, clubs, jobs, volunteering, etc, but I know a lot of people with better GPAs and better SATS that didn't. I wouldn't count on Tech unless you're trying to get into a major that wants guys and is not that hard to get into. Especially if you have no activities, jobs, or sports.

JMU was my first choice- great education program and my mom and aunt went there, wasn't really into anything else. JMU's big on activities...but no harm in trying because the school is FABULOUS.

You won't get into Georgetown or GW, that's all I really know. I mean, you probably wouldn't get into UF, and I know a ton of people here who didn't get into GW and Georgetown. Sorry man. Try like hell to get into UMD. My mom went there and absolutely loved it.

My only advice would be to not think of right now as the end all be all. If you don't get into the colleges you want theres no reason why you should settle for a "safety" school if you don't want to go there. Remember, if you start at one school it doesn't mean you have to graduate from there.

If you don't get into your college of choice then go to a community college and get some grades. Its 1000 times easier to transfer then to get accepted out of High School. There are transfer programs you can do that guarentee you a spot if you meet the requirements. Like at Montgomery College and UMD.

Out of High School people put too much emphasis into getting into a good school immediately. Never settle. There isn't a school in the country thats outta reach if you push yourself. (OK thats a stretch but you get my point)

Mooka is right. If you are serious about your education, and think you could do better than you did in high school. i.e. you didn't try as hard as you could have, then you should really consider a community college.

Maryland likes transfers from community colleges.

But if you go this route, you need to get A's in community college, which means you're going to have work really hard. If you don't want to work that hard, or if, you don't think you can do better, I would say go with the best four year school you can get into.

Ditto for George Washington...it's pretty tough to get into right now, slightly moreso than American. I would concentrate on GMU and maybe, if you're lucky, UMD...the best thing I think you can do (if you think you can make a good impression) is to schedule an interview session with the schools you are most interested in. Doing well in those would help a great deal, as would sending in a solid writing sample if you have anything to go on. Finally, make sure you spend a great deal of time with the essays on the application. They actually do place an emphasis on those, so I would have them read over and corrected by an English professor and/or Guidance Counselor. Good luck man.

advice:

Your GPA is adequate for GMU and Marymount, but kind of a stretch for AU, GW, and impossible for Georgetown. Retake SAT or take ACT, your scores will hurt you alot since you have no extracurrirulars. College admissions are cut throat...

With a 3.7 and 1340 (old SAT) I got into American, Virginia Tech, James Madison, GMU. I got rejected from UVa and William and Mary. [just to compare what is needed for some schools.]

More advice:

In the worst case scenario that you have to pick a safety school, don't think of it as a low level place that you don't want to go to. Try it out and see how you like it. I got rejected from my #1 but I couldn't be happier at JMU even though it wasn't my top choice.

Even More advice: apply to JMU

the bigger the school, the more your SAT/GPA counts. I got into Virginia tech having gourmet cooking my hardest class but i ended senior year on a 3.9 gpa. take classes you know you can get a good grade on and AP's only help if you woulve taken that class in college. I Know at Virginia tech the essay was optional so i am guessing that they didnt look at anything except SAT/GPA (i got a 1260 on it), also apply early decision because you have a better chance when you do to get in.
