Statch
I was not in favor of the move to bench Ramsey for Brunell, and even last night in the midst of the third quarter I was walking around muttering to myself about how Brunell could not throw the longball, and thus why we couldn't run the ball. Let me take my punishment now.... I WAS OH SO DAMN WRONG!!! Those last two plays were amazing. Something that seems to have been overlooked is that if we can get one or two more of those earlier in the game, our running game opens up quite a bit more. They can't stack the box. Not to take anything from Dallas, cause we all know Parcells' defenses are always good defenses (not as good as ours, but hey). Gibbs definitely needs to open it up a few times earlier and with a completion or two, defenses have to back off and voila Portis (the work-hause that he is) gets some more breathing room. Any thoughts? :point2sky
OVCChairman
I say this, when teams are watching film against the Skins, they are going to look at these 2 plays. They dont want to get beat like that. NOW we see Moss's abillity. I read a quote where Roy Williams flat out said "he beat me." This opens up a whole new ball game, not only that but the confidence is back in the Redskins offense, and the swagger is back in this team! MLiverpool
Don't be surprised if you see this again this year, when teams play cover two and are not too far back.. Brunell launches it.. its to Moss ... TOUCHDOWN REDSKINS!
Fifty Gut
I don't think Gibbs will air it out until we actually need to in a game he'd prefer to run, dink & dunk all the way to the end zone
rebornempowered
When I saw the thread title I thought it was going to be Sean Taylor thread.
Statch
I think he likes the dink and dunk and running (obviously) but I think he is also aware of how much opening up (even slightly) can do for both the running game and the dink and dunk. If you air it out, the other team has to respect that, thus they can't play 8 in the box, thus you can run. If you air it out, it frees up some of the dink and dunk over the middle and on screens. And vice versa. Once you air it out once or twice with a completion you can come back to the dink and dunk and running and then once they get complacent and the safeties starting sneaking up to help out with the line, then you go air it out on them. I think that works well, and I don't think Gibbs will use it tons, but he will use it more than he has. :point2sky
AJ_Skins
Those kinds of long bombs are dependent mostly on the receiver's speed and ability to adjust to the ball. The QB just has to put over the top to a spot where he can get to it. What Brunell failed to do last night, and has failed to do ever since he's been in this offense, is to complete 15, 20, 30 yard passes to the WRs over the middle, between defenders on a regular basis. The reason it turns into a dink and dunk fest when he's in there is that he checks off of those throws almost every time they're called. He tried some of them last night, and more than once he ended up throwing it too low, where the defender couldn't get it, but neither could the receiver, and the WRs got killed by DBs in the process. We don't have a passing game most of the time with Brunell because he flat-out can't make those throws. Lofting up an arch is not as difficult. I apologize again in advance for injecting reality into the situation, because I know the flame sare coming. Just come up with a cut-and-paste response you can put in every thread: "Brunell is great, best QB ever, and anybody who says otherwise can go to hell". Save us all a bunch of time. Statch
Wow, coming across as a tad bit angry there? Thanks for the tip but I deal in reality. I'm not saying Brunell is the greatest quarterback ever. As I said in my first post I was actually a Ramsey supporter and against the move to start Brunell. However, why did Portis only rush for 1300 yards last year, with a 3.6 yard per carry average? We didn't throw deep very often to keep defenses honest. The only point I was making that if we complete a few one or two of these 20 + throws early in the game it makes the defense back off a little bit. I don't care who the quarterback is, and that is something Gibbs talked about all offseason, getting the ball down the field to open up the rest of the offense. Unless you're Pittsburgh, you cannot rely on just running the ball. No other offense in the league wins only throwing the ball 11 times a game. You have to be able to throw it moderately deep and you have to be able to run it and both are dependent on the other.
OldflyerBob
AJ old bean, you just don't know what the hell you are talking about. If you happened to watch the game you would have noticed that not too many patterns you want had time to develop. Brunnell was sacked, what 5 times? Knocked down about 8 or so. BTW, he did as a matter of fact throw deep before the two bombs, but did not connect. Maybe you don't realize that he hasn't been working with Moss, Patten, Cooley, et al that much, because he wasn't the #1. I would expect that the timing, the confidence and communication will improve week by week. In the mean time, thank our good fortune that the 'Skins had a gutty old warrior out there who bounced up each time he got flattened and had what it took when the game was on the line.
