Didnt I see this kid punch the ball in the end zone a couple times, and get us out of 3rd/4th and shorts during the preseason? I thought he made it look easy.

During the 2004 season I saw betts and portis have problems with this, Im thinking we should use boughton in this aspect during season games. Especially on short and goal plays.

I was thinking the very same things myself. He seemed like just the wrecking ball for short yardage situations that we've been looking for. I was more than a little surprised not to see him used like that on sunday. Maybe we'll see more of him as the seson progresses

portis could do it himself...if they dont get penaltys they would b fine...

I dont mean to say negative things about portis, but power running is not one of his strong points. I could have sworn I saw him get stuffed on the goal line several times last year.

Great power runner, but his capability at keeping the ball in his hands is questionable...

I thought the only time he has problem with fumbeling the ball was when he was used as a reciever. I wasnt to impressed with his recieving abilities.

I think we should bring him in on goal line playes or 3rd/4th and short plays (FB). He seems to be able to run through the line for short yardage very easily.

I wasnt watching football during riggins hayday, but from what Ive herd this guy seems to have riggins running style.

I need a speed-dial button on this board, so that I can once again point out:

Rock Cartwright, in his (admittedly very limited) career, in real NFL games against real NFL defenses, is

  • 5 for 5 on fourth-and-short.
  • 11 of 13 on third-and-short.
  • And is, I think, perfect on x-and-goal situations, if we stick with him. (Sometimes, it took him two tries to get it in. But I think that, every time we had first-and-goal, and we sent him in, and gave him the ball, then we got a TD, either on that play or a later one.)

And this was accomplished while running behind an O-line that led the NFL in giving up sacks, in a Steve Spurrier offense.

It wasn't Portis as much as it was the offensive line and the scheme. The center position was a glaring weakness last year and it really showed on goalline situations. Also, Portis isn't exactly a shove it up the gut kind of guy...a pitch out or two on the goalline would have been nice...

I dont think you saw Betts have problems with this. Maybe Portis but not Betts.
